As a 90’s kid it’s sad seeing Kmart and Blockbuster gone. Can’t imagine how many hours I spent running around Kmart as a kid while my mom shopped for what felt like at the time the entire store. Now as an adult with my mom being gone and all the Kmarts as well I would give anything to go back to that time period in life. And people still somewhat treated each other with respect and we didn’t hear about these idiots today shooting up schools and shopping malls.

And then my brother-in-law started working over night stocking, then ended up as a dairy manager for a few years before both of the stores here closed. The K-mart where I lived closed almost 20 years ago. It was located right across the street from Wal-Mart. Both stores were always packed regardless of what time of day you went, so that one certainly didn't close due to competition from Wal-Mart, because it rivaled their business, and we've never had a Target. Idk why ours really closed, but after that K-marts started closing everywhere, K-marts that like ours were still doing good business. Soon after the ones that were left became ghost towns. It's like once stores began closing customers just abandoned the brand, which then led to more stores closing. I didn't. I shopped at K-mart until I couldn't anymore.

Man, life is ever-changing..... I sometimes marvel at the beauty and the sadness that comes with living. And seeing things and people come and go, makes one clearly comprehend just how transitory life is... things that we were familiar with doing and were able to experience during our younger years up until adulthood created lasting memories (some good, some not so good)...And with everytime we see one leaving, it's so surreal.. For those with children, like me, we can't help but tell them stories of going to some of these aforementioned places during our childhood making us smile or laugh or cry just remembering the past and how these things made us feel... Especially what happened that horrifying day on 9/11.. No one living will ever forget..even though we want to so badly for it was worst than terrifying... I'm lost for words.. And for those who were actually there and for those who lost loved ones, I have always kept you in my thoughts from time to time... Those images will haunt us... Now, I wish I hadn't watched this video..

The Kmart near us never had video games. That's one of the reasons why I felt they weren't doing so well.

Kmart closing is ridiculous. They were a mass merchandiser just like Walmart. How do you screw that up?

It's a shame too because literally all Blockbuster had to do was follow the digital streaming trend. Instead, they arrogantly decided that they didn't have to do right by their customers. They just felt entitled to their success.

It's easy to say all this now that you have the power of hindsight, but back in the day Blockbuster actually DID try to follow the digital streaming trend and compete with Netflix. The big problem with Blockbuster vs Netflix (back in the rental days) was that Netflix was cheaper, since they didn't have to pay any overhead to maintain stores and whatnot. Netflix also didn't charge late fees due to their subscription style service. Blockbuster tried to start a service like this, but it just didn't really work because of how their business operated. As for streaming, iirc they actually tried jumping onto streaming either before Netflix or not long after, but the company in charge of the technology for it (Enron) fell through. For Blockbuster to survive, they would've had to completely and rapidly restructure their business starting in the early 00s. But nobody back in 2004 (Blockbuster's peak) would've known video rental stores would be completely irrelevant in 10 years.
@Commenter8392 жыл бұрын
@@TheBlueShark Back when they were approached to buy Netflix, it was a very small video rental company and just not something they thought was worth buying. Had they bought Netflix, I doubt much would be different today (aside from the Netflix app being a blue and yellow Blockbuster app, maybe). Or maybe another company would've risen up to beat Blockbuster, and the dominant streaming app would be Redbox or something.
@abetterfuture47872 жыл бұрын
@@Commenter839 They tried it well after the fact. Like I said, the rested on their laurels. By all rights, they should have been the first company to do streaming services. But they weren't proactively seeking ways to provide better value to their customers. They just thought they were untouchable, and that simply wasn't true.

Wow Kmart in Australia is everywhere

I would like to point out at one point there was nothing but Kmart, that's why they were so successful, growing up in the 90s I remember Kmart was literally the only store in town, there was no target yet, not walmart even! There was no other store period! Just a Kmart, so everyone shopped there for everything. That was never gonna last forever, I believe the Kmart in my town which had grown to a super kmart only lasted like 3 years after the first Target was built in our town.
@TheVelourFog4202 жыл бұрын
Another Aussie mentioned Kmart closing being weird as they're still a thing here, but what gets me is the public phones.. rather than getting rid of them here in Australia, they've just been maintained and made free to call and text to anywhere in the country. Really good for the disadvantaged and many other reasons.
