The Congress Street bridge in Austin Texas, basically downtown, has the most impressive river of bats I have seen; although the bats at Carlsbad Caverns are also quite impressive.

OMG what beach are you on in florida? I live in titusville, and we definitely do not have rocks like that, LOL we only have Coquina rock! I have never found a whole Sea Biscuit much less a fossil of one! The bats were awesome. My husband and I like going to Carlsbad NM. They have this huge cave there and every evening the bats leave and it’s amazing, just like what you see there. Although you can actually get a little closer but the smell when they leave the cave is really strong. They don’t smell good. I grew up in SC on the coast around Beaufort. I have found those fossils there on occasion. I always thought they were some sort of family to the sanddollar. The little islands there are great. It would be so fun to explore them. On the first island with the mattress and chairs, how would it have been to come upon Wilson sitting in one of the chairs??!! 😂. You know? Right? 😂😂

I have been out to those same islands. Those matrix ones cleaned make the best specimens. They have not been weathered at all and come out pristine. You can remove matrix with a 6" wire wheel mounted to a motor. I used a coarse steel wheel for roughing off the matrix fast then switched to a soft brass wheel to finish. The brass wheel will polish the echinoids too. When you find a cluster of them in matrix you can remove matrix and leave 3 or 4 of them sticking out of a clump of matrix, It is easy to flatten the bottom too so they display nice.

Nice video! I used to be in the US Coast Guard and we would get calls all the time that someone hit a sandbar. Well they didn’t hit a sand bar, they pulled up to an island, didn’t read the tides and came back to their boat completely out of the water 15 yards from the water. All we could do was take the back to the station and they had to wait out the tide cycle. Happened all the time!

The little shell you found was from the Euthymella species, if im not mistaken it's probably the Elongata...there are many which are similar. You should definitely go back and camp there. An amazing place. Thank you for sowing us the Bat's so cool 😊

There is a bridge in NC on the Outer Banks that has a huge colony of Purple Martin birds that do this in reverse. They all come back to roost at sunset.

They are Brazilian Free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis)! We’re also thrilled to see something thriving like this. They do appear to be very healthy (there’s no shortage of bugs to eat around here!) Thanks for watching the video.

This was a great video, but what I really appreciated seeing was all those bats. So many places have been devastated by the disease call "White Nose Syndrome" that has literally wiped-out at least 6-million bats across the United States. This showed up in 2006 on the East coast and has spread across the US to the West coast and even into Canada. A lot of caves have been closed to prevent the spread of this disease, because if you've gone into an infected cave and then going into another cave that hasn't and you don't "properly clean your equipment and clothes" you will have spread it to more bats sealing their fate as well. It is a fungus called Pseudogymnoascus destructans. This primarily affects bats during hibernation causing them to wake up more often during the winters resulting in them using up their reserves causing them to die of starvation in their sleep, and it damages their wings and skin due to damage to their blood vessels too. The good news for You there does not appear to be any know cases in Florida as of this date. Bats are essential for a stable environment as they consume tons of insects controlling their populations naturally.

As a member of the DVPS, I went on a Florida collecting trip in the mid ‘80’s. I got to collect with an old timer named Marshal. He took us to islands off of Yankeetown Florida, where we found massive amounts of Eupatagus echinoderms. I prepped them with low grade phosphoric acid. They came out perfect.
