Jay, that’s where they were that afternoon before Diane took them to her friends to horseback ride before she shot them killing her oldest daughter…. What mother is more concerned with her car than the fact her three kids were shot…. The moment Diane’s ex husband spoke to police at the hospital, is the moment Diane’s plan went to hell…… The gun she used in the shootings of her kids, a .22 Ruger, was the exact gun she attempted to shoot herself with after suffering a miscarriage(she was a paid surrogate), everything went south for her and her ex knew she harmed her kids as did her married lover and it was the married lover who helped authorities by Wiretapping his phone conversations with her….

@@bixbycanyonbridge Steve Downs felt that as a single parent, he couldn’t give fragile, damaged special-needs children what they needed. By all accounts, Christie and Danny thrived, first in a nurturing foster home, and then adopted by the prosecutor and his wife.

I caught that too. The kids. He didn't instinctively say my kids or my children. It's like he's talking about some other children that were not his. Obviously, I can't guess the kind of relationship he had with his kids. But that aspect in the interview really stood out to me.

@nevadalamb Christie married, and had a son in 2005 (and I believe two more children, but I don’t know the details). Danny is a computer whiz. Both lead extremely private-but blessedly normal-lives in Oregon. They have no contact with Diane.

@@lesliegoodman-malamuth9796 Exactly but don't forget the prosecutor adopted those children. @@isabellind1292 Christie and Danny spent three healing years in a highly regarded foster home before the Hugis adopted them. In Small Sacrifices, Ann Rule pointed out that after the shootings, the children saw *no one* they’d known before May 19, 1983-stepping into a kinder, new world in which their needs and wants were paramount. Unlike their first years.

@@lesliegoodman-malamuth9796 I wonder if Ms Rule had any contact w/the children. She would have been their greatest advocate and I'm sure they would have had a lot of respect for her ability to tell these stories w/dignity to the victims and their loved ones. They're very strong children and should be so proud of their accomplishments. Thanks for the information.
@lesliegoodman-malamuth97963 жыл бұрын
@@isabellind1292 I recall reading, before Ann Rule died in 2015, that she did indeed remain in contact with Fred Hugi and family after the 1984 Downs trial (as well as constant checking-in during the ten days Downs was on the lam after escaping from the Oregon Women’s Correctional Center in 1987). She remained very close-lipped about Christie and Danny, saying only that they lived as normal and private a life as possible under the circumstances. Rule did divulge that both were college-educated, and that as I mentioned, Christie married and enjoyed family life, and that Danny turned his early fascination with computers into a career. People criticize Steve Downs both for allowing his ex-wife to take their three children to Oregon, and for not pursuing custody of the two survivors after the shooting. I believe he knew his own limitations as a single dad working full time, and that he wisely chose to allow a better-educated couple who already loved his children to maximize their potential for living their best lives, post-Diane.

I think it's always been popular but has just become more acceptable to say you enjoy it in recent years. Was something many people enjoyed watching or reading about but you worried if people would think something was wrong with you for enjoying such dark subject matter. My mom and I have found Peter Thomas's narration of Forensic Files a soothing sound to fall asleep to for years but it's not something we would've ever told people until recently. (RIP Peter) Sounds a bit morbid and strange to say murder stories relax you, although the sound of his voice is the actual relaxing part.

Diane Downs will forever be a case that infuriates me to no end. That woman had no remorse and was so delusional it almost hurts. She just wanted the attention and the sympathy as well to have her ''boyfriend'' beside her. The fact that one of her children had died, and the other two were in the hospital and she was basically having the time of her life as she reenacted what she said happened really shows her true nature. Every interview , every news spot, she rivaled in it. The woman always found a way to round back to herself and just talk about her own life rather than be upset about what happened.
