If a seller comes right out and says the watch is a mod, here’s what I’ve done, etc., then everything’s copacetic.

The build at 8:30 is actually a very nicely put together mod. Depending on how much that seller is charging that dial is out of a SPDY053 mini tuna so it’s got an OEM dial with mod parts from probably Namoki.

I think Heimdallr (on Aliexpress) make a similar kind of watch (specifically the dial) so might be leveraging some of those parts (uses a NH36A).

Soooo a while back i bought a "modded" seiko nh35 that has a cheap chinese lake suwa dial. Found a great strap for it and i wear it from time to time. But i think for me i realized that the allure of GS is in fact their spring drive movement. Still a fun piece to have though and it think it cost me about $120

Thanks. I bought a Hamilton and a Seiko off of Ebay. I had a warranty repair on the Hamilton, so I guess they would have told me if that were a fake. The model of Seiko would be a little fish to a counterfeiter. Even before seeing this, I would not risk as much as $2,000 on an Ebay watch purchase.

two big rules: Know what you are buying and who you are buying from. On that second point, check out the reviews including neutral and negative. Also, check what else they are selling and how long they have been selling for. There are no guarantees even with that but it can help you weigh if you're willing to take the risk.

They seem to have recently stopped, but on ebay I frequently see tons of “refurbished” Seiko watches and Citizen watches coming out of India that all look like fakes.

Yes! I have seen those and some of them look very odd. I have seen the same for JLC Club watches they are made in China or India and sold as real on eBay... Thanks for the comment

If it is a Mod watch it should be listed as such. I make lots but I never try to play them off as the real thing. Mods are a great way for people to enjoy their hobby without breaking the bank. Read the listings carefully! Buy the seller!

I've sold a couple of mod watches and it taught me a ton. Really fun to learn a little more (just scratching the surface) what goes into watch matching. For me, the key is honesty. Clearly explain what the watch is and isn't and let the buyer make an informed choice.

Yeah eBay money back protection sucks they say the buyer should always give the seller a chance to sort out and issues which I did but when I realised I was getting lip service I reported it and was told it had been too long. As I was contestantly being told it will be sorted and to not worry eBay are not living up to their promise They suck!.

The worst is tag aquaracers. Theres so many of super clones up. They all have boxes and papers and serial numbers that show on the tag authenticator. Seem to ship prdeominantly from bulgaria. I used to report them but they are like weeds so i dont bother any more. I hate seeing them go routinely at auction for like a grand.

Yep I got burned this way. Tag Formula one Red Bull Edition. I did not know until I purchased the bracelet from an authorized AD a year or so later and tried to attach it and the spring bars would not click in the wholes. Called Tag to complain on the shotty build quality, they asked for the serial number I gave it to them. They put me on hold, came back a while later and told me it was a fake. The movement is even the same BUT the original is gold in color and the watch I have the movement is silver. It came with box, papers and it looks original.. but its not.

Helpful, Chris, thanks! The eBay authentication service helped me recently; bought an SLA that supposed had “no signs of wear,” but in fact had lots (and other problems); because of that service, I was able to return no problem without paying a cent.

Let's not forget what happened at the Geneva Watch Auction last year with the fake Omega Speedmaster debacle. The Chinese Super Clones are almost undetectable.

Good topic, Chris. Ty. Ebay's authentication process has become a joke. You can sell a Rolex and everything is as stated and the buyer can back out during the authentication process. You get no specific why and there is nothing you can do about it. They protect buyers and don't give a shit about sellers.

If it is the platform ebay, then policing should be within ebay. Those watches with seiko branding are the frankenstein MOD being sold with seiko movements with chinese parts(case, dial, bracelet), it is like a homage with seiko branding LOL. As for fake with same branding as orginal and pretend swiss movement with branding are fake watches. It is not a scam unless it is permitted by the platform. I think the flooding of parts being sold in China has also sent sellers to sell frankenstein and fake watches, I think most sellers are also base on China.

eBay is a happy hunting ground for the experienced and a minefield for the newb. Build your experience gradually. If you know someone with knowledge check your picks with them before you buy. Good video to post Chris!!

I'm sorry but if you use a manufacturers logo and it's not made by that manufacturer it is 100% a fake. I have no problem with aftermarket parts as long as they aren't deceptive.

100% the dials all have a brand name however none of those dials were made by that brand. It's kind of like they are not cars with a Ferrari logo... However even the logo isn't made by Ferrari... Thanks for the comment!

That Seiko monster dial could actually be real, Seiko has made lots of limited editions and I think I’ve seen one like that. You can buy OEM dials for MOD’s but you’d have to cut the dial feet and use dial dots to get it in a 3 o’clock case. The dial looks like it’s probably fake though. I used to MOD Seiko’s for fun using as many real parts as possible but never sold any of them. I eventually quit the hobby because it turned into buying Aliexpress fake’s and then putting a fake dial that says Seiko on it to pretend to be a Rolex or some other brand watch. These are pretty prevalent on Reddit’s watch exchange subreddit too.

I'd like to know if anyone had trouble with a watch that was sent to eBay authentication service? One thing, though, which is completely on a separate point. I've seen some comparisons with Chinese watches vs. grand seiko, and in areas, the quality is better. It's a testament to the quality that's been achieved by Chinese manufacturers. That's scary in a sense because fakes will soon achieve the same level of quality as the original. I mean, there's no real manufacturing reason that couldn't be achieved in time. It's not as if Switzerland holds some secret or monopoly of craftsmanship. China has well over a billion people and is capable of manufacturing some of the highest technologies in the world. There's no reason they can't learn to do it with watches. My san martin has better quality then my tissots or glycine. Or at least the same level, but I'd say better on the macro.

These "Seikos" aren't really fakes. These are just another alternative to homage. These "mods" are often closer in look and feel to the real watches and don't have chineese mushroom brand gibberish logo, which most homages come with. For example, your grail might be the 1680, but you don't want to buy a fake and something like a San Martin with ceramic, sapphire and solid link bracelet just doesn't feel like a vintage Rolex. Chances are, you will be buying something like this. That said, the sellers really must specify what this is really is, so a casual buyer won't be scammed

Then the sell can just say the price difference was too obvious for this product to be confused with the real thing. I am bit of a watch guy, but I do like cheap fakes. So many watches u can’t try on your wrist, so for 20€ u get one in the correct measurement and the same colors, after that give it to the kids for their art projects and let them paint it…… otherwise u really wait month and than u don’t like it;) that’s depressing
