To anyone who doesn't know, broccoli leaves are delicious!! Eat them like greens, but the cooking time is only a few minutes. Also in soups. Also dried and crushed for protein shakes, and any combo drinks for quick and easy fruit and veggie mix drinks. This year I'll grow more to make some broccoli green chips like kale chips. I'm betting that they will be delicious too. 😃

These are my fave Seasonal Homestead videos! This past Thanksgiving, when I did my biggest harvest of Collards, there were some unlabeled Broccoli plants that hadn’t produced heads yet and the leaves looked exactly like one of my collard varieties but slightly bigger. I harvested them with the collards and they were delicious. Fast fwd to late Dec, the broccoli plants continued to grow and lo and behold, they produced broccoli! That’s when realized I cooked broccoli plant leaves with my collards on Nov. I will never NOT do that! I could not tell the difference!!

It is funny how when you teach children learn. My father initially did not want my brothers to learn how to cook but my mom said "NO!" they will learn because if they live alone, she wanted them both to know how to cook and not go out to eat all the time. Be healthy. My brothers are excellent cooks. I call one the Pizza KING. His pizza can rival any restaurant. It's that good.

Been making whole wheat sour dough bread for 10 years. I grind my hard red wheat berries with my solar grinder, mix it with my solar mixer and cook it in my solar oven. After grinding my wheat I keep the flower in the freezer until needed. The only ingredients in my bread is flower, water and sour dough starter. To me it is the best bread I have ever had. My wife and myself have one slice of the bread each day with humus and avocado. OK, I admit that all appliances in my house are solar powered by my solar system when I am switched to off-grid.

Long time follower here so I feel like I have a really general understanding of your values for healthy nutritious food and providing the best for your family. I recently came across some information about much of the Himalayan salt on the market testing for heavy metals and contaminants because it's not super regulated. A lot of resources suggest Celtic salt as a better option. Only mentioning it because I noticed you were using Himalayan salt in your bread and it might be worth looking into!

lol I wish I lived in a place like you do…my town has 1 grocery store that is high priced on normal products and “ok” on sale. Once in a while I’ll drive for an hour to get to the small city near me and do a little better. I still agree with the video…but I’m still paying double what you seem to lol. La Croix (or any carbonated water) have become my healthy replacement for pop (or soda I guess you say) ….it took a while to adjust but now I like it. All sorts of flavours since they’re more like hints of a flavour than actually tasting like whatever. I do find the various brands differ quite a bit, bubble size and strength as well as how natural or fake the flavours are….but all a great way to still enjoy a fizzy drink without the sugar or sweeteners.

-6f?!!! I have a f and c thermometer that i look at to do the conversions and it only goes down to 0f = -20c! Holy Moly that's cold! It is going to be -5/ 23f tonight in London, UK and apparently, it is 5 to 6c lower in temp for the time of year due to this northly Arctic blast we are all getting. We are in Zone 9a and don't typically see below - 7c/ 19.4f. So glad you managed to get the veg harvested in time! Will the animals be ok in that weather? Do you have a barn for them? I would love to have a field with fruit and nut trees to grow amongst the fruit and vegetable garden, a place for chickens and maybe some sheep. Maybe a community growing plot, where we help each other during the busy growing season, for use of the land. My hubby was a stay at home dad as i was the earner. I really wish he done things like cooking with them. I am now at home and there is a more interest now than when they were little but i do feel like i am a step back from teaching them and so it is baby steps in terms of interest in crafts, cooking and gardening. One of the things that did peak their interest more in gardening was the wormery crate system we have and they would help feed the worms the veg scraps as i teach them about worms and what they can do. I mean who doesn't like talking about worm poo! hehe I like to dream big but i do enjoy and appreciate what we have and are able to grow in our front and back gardens. I love being able to extend my traditional cooking into home grown produce and preserving more and more for the "hungry gap" each year. You are really truly inspiring in what you do. To be inspired by traditional cooking and homesteading isn't regressing into a stereotype as i want to add to my pre-existing skills of breaking those boundaries by learning how to fix cars, DIY and being amongst the few female IT Specialists in my networks, etc. I think the modern homesteader is so different than what it was in the past, not just in terms of technology but the freedom women now have to make their own positive choices and directions and not just in a family balance. I hope that makes sense. Those pumpkin bars look so yummy! Best wishes from London, UK and stay warm and safe guys! x

Thank you so much! Sounds like you are doing awesome! I come from an upbringing where my Mom was single most of my childhood. She worked and honestly didn’t like to cook much so I didn’t learn much cooking until I got married and needed the skill. It’s never too late to start, and I’m sure your kids are doing wonderful as is! You have some great goals. Loved reading about them.💛
@AnyKeyLady11 ай бұрын
@@TheSeasonalHomestead Thanks! We can dream big anyway! After my mum died when i was 10, my dad didn't really pick the best person to marry, so i ended up in care and learning to cook in my teens but i always loved how my Nan cooked and baked. My mum wasn't much of a cook and my dad said you could fix roads with her gravy! It was then that i started to learn how to make her infamous gravy and start cooking from scratch. I didn't meet my hubby until i was 10 years into my career, after working my way through uni. It is such a lovely feeling to have a family to provide and care for, whether it be through working or cooking, growing fruit and veg and just generally teaching kids about the world and the importance of being kind and caring and that they have a mum and dad who love them. They are getting into gardening and cooking a bit more now and hopefully they will pick something up along the way. I learnt a lot about DIY from my dad, who wanted a boy but ended up with two girls! lol He still taught me things though as i was interested. Parenting really does frame who a person becomes but it is also the determination of the child and the willingness to learn regardless. I am sure your mum would have done more if she could and not everyone is into cooking, etc Anyway, i'm waffling now. lol Take care!
