I can appreciate the technical proficiency of breeding the high quality shrimp. But honestly I'm much more in love with lower quality ones where they're still colorful, but transparent enough to let light through. They just look so vibrant to me. Blue jellies and low grade cherries are so pretty to me.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 жыл бұрын
I totally respect that. With grading the real reason it matters, is because it takes so many more generations to get the deep colors. However, you should like whatever it is you like! The wild neocaridina are one of my favorites honestly

This video is the best best best! I’ve been keeping fish since I was 5.. and a lot of the stuff you say is what I naturally do, don’t medicate, have tonnes of live plants, have a little eco system, be easy going! I love it when you say be like nature, no sudden changes! It’s so true. I’m only just beginning keeping shrimp but have had fish tanks all my life. This is honestly super helpful! Thank you!! :)

What I like about Alex and his way of presenting is it’s all “information gold” no filling it’s all meat 👍 I’ve watched so many videos already that have long videos but impart such little information.

I run a sponge filter, no heater, living off well water that is ridiculously hard at 550ppm after softening and no idea what the ph is since I never check it. Planted heavy and with dragon stone and random snails. They seem fine and I have no idea what kind they are I just pointed when I was at petco. Different colors and the kids look however they look I don't even care a little

Temps do matter but not in keeping them alive as long as you don't go to hot, some people even have shrimp in outdoor ponds that ice over in the winter and their colonies survive. but higher temps do increase breeding and decrease longevity like with most other aquarium animal stock.

It would be great to have temperatures in both fahrenheit and celsius scale. I understand that the uploader is us-american and "thinks" in fahrenheit, as most of his compatriots, but on the other hand it would be great to make information accessible to as many people as possible, and all the rest of the world uses celsius, as it is practiced generally in science. To give both values would facilitate communication.

The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium I have been told the tigers will outbreed and be more aggressive then the cherries but my TT’s are still new and I had to move them all (including the cherries) out of my cray tank because of predation so I’m not sure yet. I am rebuilding my badly decimated colony. (The tigers were new to the tank. i never got a chance to really see them breed in that cray tank.). I find them to be kinda shy right now, outnumbered still by the cherries.

I've been experimenting with a mix of colours since the start of the year. It's weird, they do throw some "wild types"(the least colourful of which I've been moving into a fish tank to see where they go) but one colour also might just pop out a baby the same colour as the other parent, as if there wasn't a mixed parentage. So I've had high quality oranges from low quality reds, blues from greens, half blue and half random from one clutch, and so on. Even the "wilds" can have a lot of red/green/blue pigment and the patterning varies a lot so I'm interested to see where it goes. I've got a couple clear neos with blue stripes that I quite like, kinda like caridina tiger shrimp. I've also had some rili patterns recently start to emerge out of nowhere. This tank is a pure potluck C:
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 жыл бұрын
Totally! And usually people keep the origin a secret...or don't even know how they made it...but if you get 2 sharing the colors or patterns we like....then it can usually be selected and line bred! I have dark dark blues that i crossed with jades a year ago.... and one batch had orange eyes, navy blue body and a pink or gold razorback AKA , "gold line" ...to my surprise all their babies where black with white eyes and a pink line down their back haha...it lasted about 2 or 3 rounds of babies and then the color was back to a normal dark blue....that's a lot of the run, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing! And if you ever have photos youd like to share, consider joining our facebook group page :) CHEERS!

Thank you kindly. That's a super impressive anount of time of keeping shrimp! I just think this info is the hard info to find...only experience and chatting with others over the years, seem to gain this type of info. As for ideal conditions...that info is all over, and people stick to it religiously and don't seem to just take a loss or two now and then... they assume one shrimp dies and they need to do an 80% water change or add chemicals. Just low and slow...chill. I swear, the more i forget about my shrimp, the better they do

@@Fishtory Thank you! I've just got back into the hobby this year after a 20 year break. I'm learning so much from your channel and others. I cannot get enough of your in depth videos. There's no one else delving the way that you do. You also tell it very well. I look forward to hopefully many, many more years of your content. I'm not sure if you've already made a video, but I'm learning that all these species are a bit unique. For example, I recently am keeping CPDs and emerald rasbora/danio together. They are really cute and interesting to watch as they play and do other things in the tank. I just thought they looked cool when I looked into them, but I am rewarded with far much more with their social behavior. It reminds me of a bunch of hamsters in a colony all playing and socialization, its remarkable! What are your top favorite aquarium inhabitants you've found over the years, are amongst your favorites because of a peculiarity or uniqueness you believe merits recommendation to others to try and keep as well? I'd love a video like this. Or, if too complicated, maybe a video that answers this question in differing biotopes?

From my experience, the only reason to care about temperature is that they will breed faster at higher temps, so if you want lots of babies, keep them in the 75-80 degree range.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 жыл бұрын
Generally true! Especially with neocaridina....they're more prone to fungal infections slightly, but i think its worth keeping them at 78 personally
@benblassingourami984
@benblassingourami984 5 жыл бұрын
The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium Oh yeah, I probably should have clarified that I meant for neos! I think most other shrimps also have the same reaction to higher temps, but their ideal ranges are probably a little different. I’ve heard people say that too high of temperatures can cause fungal or bacterial diseases, but I keep my neos at ~78 and I’ve never had any issues. I also keep two smaller colonies unheated at about 70 and they don’t breed even half as fast as my warm colony, so I think I prefer keeping them warm.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 жыл бұрын
@@benblassingourami984 yes, ive had similar results for the most part. Although in a shallow tank with high tannins and about 300tds (mimicing a late summer Taiwanese mountain creek) seems to also work as low as 72 for me...but thats way too much work... 75 is the magic number for where they produce over and over...otherwise ive seen that females will berry up...often abort the clutch and have one clutch every 6 months or less, and all staggered .. when at room temp in like a nano desk 5 gallon. All that said, my outdoor pond neos produce enough to keep an ever slightly growing number of shrimp in Seattle weather.

A school of small fish, some snails, LOTS of plants. (It's 125 litres / 33 gallons, so there SHOULD be room for shrimp and a small schooling fish. The plants are there to make it look pretty, but everything else doesn't need to be big and flashy; as long as there's interesting behaviour that's really all I need.)

You and Lucas and pops are just the best, no comparison. Oh, right, the colony thing, I hated selling off any of my brichardis and I am not normally like that with fish.

Great video, as always! I beat you to it on the Tom Jones interlude though XD I'm definitely going to at least skip a day feeding, as I'm starting to see a worrying amount of baby snails preparing for world domination around the water surface. I keep my blue shrimp (only 3rd generation in now) in a tank without a heater, keeping itself right about the 21'C (or 70'F) mark, and as summer has passed, I do notice mainly the females moving around a lot less and seeming to not get berried as enthusiastically as when it was a bit warmer. In the evening I like to top the water off with some water, a bit warmer than their ambient and all seem to be just a little livelier. As you mentioned, I also keep Mother Nature in mind, and justify that little insurge of warmer water as there's bound to be someone peeing in a river somewhere in their natural habitat right now anyway. Temperature wise.

I recommend spending 75 or more to make their over ight shipping worth it (ive found their shipping to be more expensive than other places by 14 dollars...but their quality way way better and prices on fish very good on most species (shrimp, crayfish and snails are priced amazingly for rare stuff.) And they donate lots to tanks for teachers, the humane society, and women and childrens shelters in Indianapolis...plus buy from local high quality breeders within the USA whenever possible...so it supports the hobby all around. Have fun and let me know what all you get! So exciting!

Question , you mention about Iron and other minerals killing Shrimp , could you or maybe you already have a video with more detail about that? I have a red plant aquarium where I do dose some iron every now and then and I was thinking to put some shrimp in there @fishtory!
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 8 ай бұрын
Oh so iron is fine, unless you see orange and red staining minerality levels.... but in doses for plants etc, its usually safe. Some tap water that comes out orange, is not however.. it is copper which is in plant pestacides and or fish meds that is a real killer. Avoid any copper ...copper sulfate specifically is the most common

Thank you for this Alex. I just had my first batch of neocardina babies. They are all doing great, and seem to be a couple of different ages. I have them in a tank with some adult furcata rainbows and chili rasbora. The fish aren't bothering with them so far. I hope they won't. I do have a question if you have an answer -- do you think it would be risky for me to put the furcata rainbows in my praecox rainbow tank? 7 praecox, 4 furcata. But my tank is really active and alive with the addition of the furcata. The dwarf rainbows are so gentle and peaceful, i knew they wouldn't try to harm the furcata. I'll make sure i have crushed up flakes when i feed mixed with the regular flakes. I also have hakari micro pellets which everyone loves. You're still the best! @Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
Yes they can, they usually won't eat larger eggs, such as cichlids or perhaps even plecos/corydoras....but amano shrimp can even manage to eat 2mm or smaller eggs, where as cherry shrimp or neocaridina types, generally only eat smashed, moldy or super super tiny eggs, such as tetras, rasboras or badis. And even if they do munch on fish eggs...its usually a handful of eggs and not even 20% or more. (Off the top of my head)

@Kat-hs2ij
@Kat-hs2ij 5 жыл бұрын
If I can answer u by my experience, you have to do water changes.... 20% per week will be good. No water change leads to bad water even if it looks okay.. fish don't talk to say they're not okay, surviving doesn't mean happy, maybe u never lost fish, neons are pretty strong (for example they should live in cold water but they survive in heated tank) but shrimps are verry sensitive.. I lost my ghost shrimp in 3 day I never knew why but my velvet, cherry and amano are good now.. 2 of my velvet died at first but the others are good. Be sure u don't have No3 Nh4 No2 and copper in your water.. copper is fatal to shrimps, No3 have to be in verry small amount, and for that u need water changes even if u have a lot of plants.. all tank even "No co2, no fert, no filter etc", need it. And not a high level of minerals (gh-kh). Anyway depending on which species u want to have, tchek their profile to see which GH is better for them. Also be careful with the way u acclimate them.. try to put a little bit of the water tank in the bag/bowl few times while an hour, so they can acclimate to your water parameters and temperature. It's a lot to think/do but it's the better and sure way to not loose shrimps... some are expensive so u don't want them to die. And mystery snail can be verry big, be careful 😁

Thanks for the info. I actually been feeding my shrimp the crab food to. I keep my tank At 78 and I’ve noticed it takes about a month and a half from birth to them carrying babies. I do have an issue that it’s a blue shrimp tank and two baby red shrimp hitchhiked from the store that I bought the blue shrimp from. They’ve been interbreeding with my blue shrimp causing brown shrimp. Sadly I have to move them to my 20 gallon community tank and they don’t seem to last in there (dwarf frogs, betta, cities, harylquins, and ghost shrimp). Big problem I have as it’s only shrimp and snails are my plants keep getting smaller because of not enough food. Trying to use aquarium co ops fertilizer. Any one how any other ideas about my plants. They did great when the other stuff I have was in it. I can’t even keep hornwort in my shrimp tank
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 жыл бұрын
So easy green adds a lot of nitrogen forms...which is fine if you're understocked, however buying micro and macro combos (usually they leave out carbon iron and nitrogen when it's not an all in one type fertilizer). May help the plants, since it sounds like theres plenty of fish making nitrates and ammonia... i would probably guess you need a stronger light and youd want to leave it on 8 hours a day...on high...or 10-12 on medium. .that or adding co2... i have videos on upkeep of my planted tanks and installing co2/the cheapest yet in my opinion, also the best for the money- products linked (that ive used for years now)
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 жыл бұрын
To set your shrimp straight, just keep removing those pale blue or tan/clear ones... it usually takes 3 generations to clear out most traights mostly (from what ive seen)....ive had the same thing happen when shrimp hopped down racks into other tanks... try and keep all your best colored females and then get rid of (another tank) the males that arent great looking...this will help it all speed up, but if the offspring that is still blue - crosses with one another...or even worse - a hiding clear shrimp, youll probably have an easier time starting over...ive culled tanks at like 80% or even higher sometimes...if you're dedicated...or just pay someone like me and pay the premium for really "true" breeding genetics. Good luck, my friend!

Hello Alexander. My shrimp have developed a problem that has me concerned for the individuals and the community. I can't seem to find anything related to it so far and I was hoping you might have some info from your experience with shrimp (neocardina). Over the last 24 hours I've noticed that 2 of my berried shrimp have a white fuzz coming from their eggs while being berried. I have seen this fuzz develop on dropped eggs before but I've not seen it on the shrimp holding eggs. I believe it to be a fungus. Is this something you've experienced before? I have a picture to show if it helps. I would be very grateful for any info or directions to a solution. Thanks! P.S. hope everything is going great with you, your family, and your tanks!

It is unfortunately a fungus... hopefully it is not elobiopsidae (i may have the spelling incorrect, however it sounds like "L - O -Bi- Ops-Eh-Day) Usually its green or yellow, regardless- many fungus strains (mostly from bulk orders originating in asia) have recently taken hold in the population entering the USA ... there are a number of fungi out there, however if it is related to that or similar ones, there is no known cure and people usually advise quarantine the shrimp around the infected ones for a month .... then kill or quarantine those effected and literally bleach or hydrogen peroxide the tank/ start plants, filter and substrate all over again. It could fungal and less virulent, like a velvet type infection so try API fungal cure at half fish recommended dosages or something similar, first. But if they do not heal or if they die, save your colony and future shrimp, money and invertebrates and start over. This is why im willing to pay more and shop for shrimp only from places with 90 day quarantine now (used to be 30 but the new fungi is evolving and very sneaky). Aquatic Arts . Com does this and theyre having a sale of 25% off already good priced shrimp...or any time after this week when the sale ends, use the code SECRETHISTORY15 for 15% off the shrimp, oh and mention my channel and you'll be entered into our 500$ july shrimp give away that im doing with them as a partner...if you use their sale of 25% off just leave my name or channel in the comments and theyll let me know and ill add you into the give away in July! @Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 жыл бұрын
Way too warm...they like 78 max to thrive. Also id try and add leaf litter and drop that ph to around 7.5 with 6.5 or 7 ideal. Also make sure you dont do a ton of water changes...just let it chill...if yheres no fish, ive gone as much as 6 months without water changes...many people shock shrimp by fiddling around with water. Consistency is the most important thing. Even if its high ph they may breed..but theyll have to get used to it... their eggs may fail a few times even, but those babies that finally hatch will be totally aclimated from then on usually. Also use very small amounts of water dechlorinator (i found stresscoat is not good...i like seachem prime)... or even distilled water at 99 cents a jug at a market. Good luck and watch my other how-to shrimp care videos :)

You need a stronger air pump im guessing, or a sponge filter with a little power head/ outflow pipe...theyre very inexpensive on amazon. But also some plants go into shock if they were used to having flow and it stops...so you may need to trim back the dying leaves and let the plants re-aclimate.

Hi from the uk ! I’ve got talking catfish in my tank would they have been responsible for the loss of 7 bamboo shrimp some weeks ago. I’m actually thinking of finding new homes for the catfish because of this because I kind of want to have shrimp in my tank ! Please can you advise?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
What species of catfish? Only a larger catfish like synodontis, maybe some plecos (it would be odd, but it happens) and raphael or red tail catfish will eat that large of shrimp. Corydora are a great pairing...and also you could check out banjo catfish, lizard tail or whip tail catfish... and finally brochis which is like a super sized corydora, would all get along fine. The other thing to consider is that bamboo shrimp need lots of floating debris and or algae / food particles to feed all day long..and a location with flow for them to perch and wait for the current to bring them food...they arent good at scavenging off surfaces and can die from lack of water flow/ or lack of food if you have a uv sterilizer, skimmer or even just very very thorough filtration on the tank. Lastly make sure you add some egg shells, crushed cuttle bone or crushed coral/limestone (250 to 500 grams per 40 liters of tank water if you dont have hard water)... look up their gh/kh and make sure your tank matches those details if all else fails. Goodluck!

I recently purchased shrimp 3 different times. From what I had researched it didn't seem anything I couldn't handle. However, I killed all of them. I feel like I have poison water. Dang!! My bettas are all alive..I have 7 of them in different tanks. The water parameters were okay...I don't know..maybe it was too warm of water? Well, I'm just wondering only if you think I got the wrong impression. This meaning, they are touchy to keep as far as water goes....or other factors I just didn't know about, or perhaps I didn't acclimate them slow enough. My fish weren't hurting them. I just found them dead...all of them, in different tanks, but with water that had been checked. At this time I really am feeling I can't have these critters which is a shame as I think they have a lot of charm and they aren't mean spirited. It's no big deal if you can't think of anything I might have done. I am curious as to what the heck was so awful. On youtube it seems so many folks enjoy them and I don't get the impression they are a delicate creature.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that, but no- they aren't super fragile... if you get a neocaridina species ....red cherry, blue dream, blue velvets, red rilis, yellow sakura, gold lines, brown chocolate, snowballs, green jades or carbons are all great. Id make sure your nitrates are very low, dont buy tiger shrimp, crystal reds or blacks, babaultis, or Taiwanese/ japanese bees or bolts...so no king kongs, blue bolts, green hulk, pinto, galaxy, herringbone, no red wines, no gold bees or pure red lines etc. Beyond that they need about 68-80 degree waters with 74 being pretty much ideal. Also they need catapa leaves or wood for the tannins and anti bacterial properties usually.... the ph needs to be 6 to 7.5 and tds between 50 and 300ppm ideally. I wouldnt give up, but slowly acclimate the shrimp over 20 minutes or so and theyll be fine usually. Also finding local shrimp that are acclimated to your tap water helps keep them alive somewhat

@@Fishtory Maybe I didn't acclimate slow enough and long enough. Some of them were super little guys, very young. I had Cherry and I think they were called Blue Velvet and some green ones. They died so soon it seems like it had to be acclimation. Thanks for the information. I'm going to lay off for a bit on shrimp (for their own sake). This was a costly bummer.

temp fluctuations is a real thing esp true for caridina/bee shrimp, can sometimes be the case with neos... its the rate at which the temp drops which makes it deadly, if the temps drop quick its deadly, if its a slow drop in temp its usually fine. the second -myth i dont know where you heard that from, but many people have been keeping various shrimp together for some time now,but some shrimp shouldnt be housed together ie amanos and long arm shrimp/whisker shrimp, these shrimp are aggressive feeders can an may eat shrimp and their young. 3rd myth it depends on the species of fish..(eg.gouramis are merciless hunters) and also wether your tank is heavily planted an if the shrimp have been established first.. myth about mixing colours is done usually by people that like the look of different colours and for the fun of keeping them. not mixing them is mainly for people getting into linebreeding/ working on certain colourforms/breeding for profit. though some of the info is correct, some of those myths you may have misheard,or taken as a common fact at one point..
