Hey guys, I wanna apologize for making y’all wait so long for a video that ended up getting cut in half. I’ve been in somewhat of a creative funk for the past month or so. Before continuing the story of Theseus, There’s another more one-off project I’ve been itching to get started on. I think that’ll be the breath of fresh air I need right now. I’ve also been woefully neglectful of my extremely generous supporters on Patreon. No excuses for that, but I hope to be better at sharing behind-the-scenes progress for this next video. I know that after saying all this, most of you will leave very gracious and supportive comments and tell me not to worry. Which is super appreciated! I just needed to get it off my chest.

In the version I've always heard, Dionysus didn't take Ariadne before they left Crete. Instead, Theseus abandoned her on an island on the trip back to Athens and Dionysus (weird choice of gods) saved her...

@@birdmcturd1626 Ignoring the fact that Dionysus doesn't seem to really have spent any actual time as a mortal, being a mortal hardly makes one more empathetic than a god. If you read the text in the video, it mentions that it happened on Naxos. Not sure how Jake missed that. I assume that he might have thought Naxos was on Crete, and not its own separate island?

Yeah, I heard it too. Which makes me think that Theseus never loved her, he used her for his convenience and as soon as he could, he got rid of her. Which is extremely cruel and selfish, but in retrospect, this hero has a pretty big dark side, even having no problem kidnapping girls or descending into the Underworld to try to kidnap Persephone, a married goddess and make her his friend's wife.

For anyone wondering: in a fragment of Hesiod, Theseus abandoned Ariadne in Naxos, where she was later found by Dionysus. The version Jake is reading (Pseudo Apollodorus), has Dionysus taking her of without Teseus knowlegde.
@MermaidMusings73 ай бұрын
There are multiple versions of the Dionysus/Ariadne myth, which can be confusing. In the Orphic religion, Zagreus/Dionysus is the son of Persephone and Zeus. In 'classical' mythology, he is the son of Zeus and Semele. Every myth that we know of has multiple versions, and it depends on which version you choose to believe.
@anne.aka.demeter5 ай бұрын
Whaat? I don't follow Pseudo-Apollodorus, but Theseus hated Ariadne! He hated her so much that he left her on Naxos while she was asleep and forgot to change the sails. That's when Dionysus saved Ariadne, when she was on the verge of death!

@@Amy_the_Lizard It's usually Poseidon (and/or Aphrodite), because he's the god who sent the bull in the first place, with Minos promising him to sacrifice it afterwards... which he very much did not. So not only did Poseidon made Minos' wife Pasiphaë fall in love with the bull, but also striked it with madness later, so it devestated Crete, until Heracles got the task to catch it alive and bring it to his cousin, King Eurystheus. Who promptly decided to set it free (yes I know, great idea). It's btw the same bull, who later devestates the area around Marathon and kills Androgeus, whose death is the reason Minos wants those 14 tributes from Aegeus.

Both Medea and Pasephae mother of ariadne and Minotaur are Colchian (modern Georgia) royals, medea is the daughter of King Aeetes of colchis, Pasephae and Circe his sisters. In Greek mythology they are children of Helios the sun titan, but in Georgian Paganism sun is a female godess Barbale and her Priestesses were magic healers who practiced witchcraft. So Greeks interpreted our sun Priestesses as witch daughters of Helios and Hecate. Greek mythology is wide and includes a lot of other cultures but with their interpretations.

Yes, that would be bcuz to visit harm on someone and/or kill them, that you've taken said person into your house/domain as a guest, is to violate _xenia,_ the doctrine of guest-host relationship in ancient Greece to which kings especially were beholden, and so yield the result of Old Thunder himself sitting you (Zeus in his aspect as _Xenios_ is guardian of the household) or the three Furies hounding you until such time as you repent of your crimes. The stories of Bellerophontes and Peleus are but two examples.
