I absolutely loved the first book, it reminded me a lot of Hyperion Cantos. Boy, I couldn't imagine the books getting better and better, but with each book, I'm amazed at how everything is set up. Regarding the "we know the narrator is alive at the end" aspect, it didn't really take anything away from the anticipation or investment point of view. You KNOW he will live through it, you KNOW how the story ends, what is so harrowing is how he gets there. He literally spoils every major moment for you, really early on, but the prose and story setup is so good that you want to know HOW he gets to that point. I'm nearing book 6 and it really strikes a good balance between some more philosophical books like Hyperion Cantos (which is almost entirely alegory and religion, more difficult to read) and something like Mistborn (very straight forward narrative, action packed, easy to read, easy to grasp).

I liked how Baen books allowed eARC access to anyone. The sixth book was terrific. I generally agree with your opinion. I’m someone that loves both fantasy and science fiction. Big surprise that I like this series :) I also am a huge fan of Kurt Vonnegut, and one of his rules of writing is to start at the end: starting your story as close to the end as possible. This is exactly how Empire of Silence starts; we understand the “end” of this story at the very beginning. But Sun Eater is very much fantasy with a dash of science fiction. For me personally, that is right up my genre interests.

This is a series I've been tentatively interested in, but am not sure how much I'd really like. Name of the Wind comparisons make me more cautious, but I've also heard it compared to Book of the New Sun, which is very tempting.
@joshdoe35079 ай бұрын
The only real comparison I would make to Name of the Wind is that the story is being told by the main character. Otherwise there aren't any similarities story wise, I've always thought that a weird comparison because its not like Rothfuss invented that narrative framing device. More than any other story I would say its far more influenced by Dune and a bit of BotNS.

Take the “time travel” of 3 body problem, the historical references of Dune, the YA melodrama of Red Rising / Kingkiller, some Lovecraftian / Cronenberg body horror - then write a fantasy story based on “how often do you think about the Roman Empire”… The prose is advanced enough to add some weight to the characters - who even though they live hundreds of years, act like high schoolers. I like it - give it 4 highmatter swords out of 5.

I'm over half way through Empire Of Silence and...I'm very conflicted about it; it is very well written, although I wouldn't say the prose is anything that could be raved about like a Gene Wolfe or Guy Gabriel Kay, its good for what he is doing. I understand Ruocchio is painting on a huge canvas and building a saga but I'm finding it a little boring at the moment - there isn't a great deal of action although Hadrian's journey has been interesting at points and Hadrian as a character isn't especially likeable but I guess that is by design and he will grow through the series. I can probably name the 3 BookTubers you were referring to but not referring to ... That was not why I wanted to comment though, just funny. What I really wanted to say was more about your statements regarding Hadrian being a bit of a generic main character. Not that this is a failure, or critically negative, in my eyes. It's very obvious that almost everything Hadrian does is telegraphed from the very onset of the narrative - giving the reader a hint (more than a hint) about what's happening later on. Maybe this is why the character doesn't grow, because you're getting him from later/then and now/before ... depending on your perspective. This can work though, because Ruocchio develops a MASSIVE and well established universe AROUND Hadrian which is where the story shines. The secondary characters jump off the page as Hadrian tells his story, because they are what drives him to do what he does, or hinder him from doing what he thinks he needs to (or both! Hail Caesar?) I do love some of the hard sci-fi aspects in later books (agree, lacking in the first) as they tie into the story unobtrusively. And who's to say that a main character needs to be the most interesting? Just because he's telling the story? I've read the story of Wei Shi Lindon Arelius and for sure, he's a character that the story develops around, while he does his thing moving forward.
@TheShadesofOrange9 ай бұрын

I finished Empire of Silence a few days ago. I gave it 2 stars on Goodreads. It is without a doubt one of the most overrated books I've ever read. The first 600 pages is extremely slow and could have been condensed to about 100 pages. I can certainly see the series getting better but that first book is brutal. The author had some repetitive tendencies that drove me nuts. For example, when he has a character speaking, he'll start a paragraph with the first sentence or two of the characters words (quotation), then several sentences of largely unnecessary information, and then he gives the last sentence or two of the quote at the end of the paragraph. There were several times I got to the end of a paragraph and had completely forgotten what was said at the beginning. I had to glance back at the beginning of the quote to put together what was being said. Ugh. I'll probably continue the series but I'm not rushing to the bookstore to buy Book #2.

I think it’s great that a space opera story is finding an audience. Every success lifts the genre!

Going from book of the new sun to sun eater right after left me pretty unimpressed with book one after all of the hype. The obvious inspiration doesn’t detract at all as I love the premise and narrative structure but just found the prose average and character work clunky with the interactions and dialogue between characters feeling very cliched and tired. I will continue with book two but just finding all these recent buzz sci fi series poorer imitations of works from the last few decades.

Yeah I've heard people compare Sun Eater to Book of the New Sun but I feel it pales in comparison

I hated Empire of Silence. I don't understand the hype. Currently in a slump thanks to it.

I really feel like it's a sci fi book not written for a traditional sci fi audience

@@TheShadesofOrange Yes I think your right. I do enjoy a good fantasy romp like John Gwynns Shadow of the Gods et al that was amazing imo. Or Sam Sykes Seven blades really flavorful. Im on a Cyberpunk kick right now enjoying Necrotech: SINless, series by K C Alexander yet generally Im into stuff like Blindsight with big ideas and transhuman questions. So i think your right its just not totally for the deep scifi crowd. After what you mentioned I'm going to get it another go and see if book two can loop me in.

I may just dislike unreliable narrators who are braggarts telling the grand Adventure but i found myself really unimpressed by both Sun Eater and Kingkiller.

Yeah, you must just hate that story telling device
@TheShadesofOrange9 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree that the format might not be for you. The narrative choice leads to a character who seems very full of themselves

@@TheShadesofOrange lol. I actually like the concept. My issues with Empire of Silence was the constant changing of setting and new side characters made it really hard to invest in the story and by the time we got to gladiator stuff I was checked out.

It was kinda boring, and seemed like a rip off of books from several other series

I'm halfway through book two, and I think Hadrian is a buffoon, an idiot who fancies himself a poet. I find him a bit tiring and pompous, but I am enjoying the series.

for majority of modern audience everyone who does not narrate their own story like they ar writing grocery list are pompous

Yeah it's part of why I compared it to Name of the Wind. It's hard to write that narrative perspective without the character coming across as boastful
