Bob Hargenblatz Lol the entirity of port of morrow is nothing compared to the rest of their music, also some of wincing the night away is quite shit
@LordSprakIV8 жыл бұрын
Wincing The Night Away is their best album, but Port of Morrow is relatively weak
@saxfreak018 жыл бұрын
Couple of weak tracks on PoM but September, 40 Mark Strasse, PoM, Rifle's Spiral, It's Only Life are up there with Mercer's finest songs, and most of the rest of it is solid stuff too. September is a magnificent song. It could be a Richard Thompson song from the early 70s, and praise doesn't come any higher than that, in my book.
@gordiemeow8 жыл бұрын
I'd like to make an argument for 40 Mark Strasse. It's beautiful AND interconnected to the other lyrics on the album. It's not their best, but it's still a hell of good song.
@saxfreak018 жыл бұрын
I agree, it's a fantastic song. Must admit it took me a while to get into the album, and I can understand some fans thinking it's a bit too slick and close to AOR in places, but most of the songs are good to excellent and that's all that really matters. Also, I liked the more direct, but still poetic, lyrics. The old Shins lyrics did get a bit close to word salad at times.

I'm 81 years old and love this band the shins. I'm just a little scared I'll never get to see their 6th studio album. If they keep the trend of releasing an album every 4 or 5 years

This song is genius. Listen how Mercer adds a scale of 3 to 5 notes and syllables at the end of every verse to brighten up the musicality. "weird angles coming over THE WIRE" or "down my nose to the fish IN THE BARRELS". I also love how he plays with the tone at the end of the part that goes "wash the blood and the guts TO the OCEan".

Very promising teaser for the new album. The main melodic idea is great, though there aren't as many melodic twists and turns as usual. Mercer is still the only truly great songwriter in current mainstream indie/rock/pop as far as I can see. That said, his competitors are abysmal.

I had a listen to your stuff. I really like your songwriting, but I think you need to step things up from just the vocals and acoustic guitar (which were presumably recorded simultaneously?). Do you have a band or is it just you? It's fine to be a one-man act but I strongly recommend you add to your recordings by layering instruments and learning how to use a DAW.
@josephstalin78038 жыл бұрын
Not an Avocado I am working on that hahaha Heavily inspired by James Mercer though There is a band it's just hard to get them all working

I like the psychedelic influences, but after WTNA they have been veering deeper and deeper into adult rock territory, and this is not an exception. It's not bad, but.. it's not that great either. It's a bit boring to be honest. I hope they find their edge again and stop imitating their own back catalogue.

Just because it's creative doesn't mean it's inspired by drugs. Now if the video was of James Mercer sitting in a car, in some shady ass neighborhood, waiting for a score or just getting ripped of, then I would say it was inspired by drugs.

On a walk in a fragile state Weird angles coming over the wire Back home we got girls in braids And they're on roller skates, and they roll any way they like From my town I can always look down Down from my nose to the fish in the barrels But in the wiles of human life There are pity nights and a ray of gentle lights So tonight Dance and cry The dead alive Monuments were awfully dense I flew by in a daze on the freeway He can whine of our different times But me, I'm fine with the mirrors this far away For the muse in our bodies to function Rain gonna fall on the hills where we hide Wash the blood and the guts to the ocean Leave the pike making everything alright So tonight Dance and cry The dead alive So tonight Dance and cry The dead alive Figments Figments of imagination Figments of imagination (figments of imagination) Figments of imagination Figments of imagination Figments of imagination Figments of imagination Figments of imagination Figments of imagination Figments of imagination (Figments of imagination)
