My New M2 VERSUS 1M! BMW Shmeemobile Showdown

You asked for it, so we shall deliver! It's a BMW showdown with my new M2 LCI and the legendary E82 1M!The two BMW Shmeemobiles follow a similar philosophy of small-car, big-engine, and not only is my favourite a bit of a surprise, but let's see what Brad thinks on his first drive in the 1M.

It's definitely the 1M for me. I've always loved the launch spec, beautiful colour that really suits the car, and while ny loathing for how the M2 looks cant be the decider, it certainly does take a lot away from what joy of ownership there may be. ... and i hate how big it is. The 1M is a special occasions car, but so it should be as it is a special car, imho.

I’d be more inclined to go for the 1M. I prefer sport cars that have a manual gearbox, hydraulic steering and honestly, less of the high technology, I really prefer a more analogue feel for cars like that. I’ve a 2018 GT86 Pro and even though equipment is basic, it feels very solid and analog, doesn’t have electric steering with three different settings for instance, I don’t like that.

The comment about BMW's carrying speed very well is seemingly true for high end German saloons, my audi S5 is very much the same, as was my C-63 before it. makes me very cautious about speed, only needed to get caught doing almost 100 once to learn my lesson!

Hi Tim, the size difference is due to the current 2-Series Coupé being based on the G20 3-Series platform, where as the other "2" derivatives are built on the smaller Mini Countryman platform. Your G82 was based on the original 1-Series pan, so it is naturally a much smaller vehicle.

To me the 1M is the much more pure of the two. The M cars were traditionally discrete. I find that the current M cars seems to be more relying to the looks to set themselves apart, rather than just amazing performance.

Turbo engines work much better with modern automatic gearboxes They don't slip like old torque converters and provide uninterrupted load for the engine between shifts. Plus new engines have rev hang that is very noticable in manuals, because of engine emissions management. Auto gearboxes match very well with turbo engines so it's a great choice :)
