I think your automatic muscle memory with your right hand speaks volumes at 09:00-09:06. You could not help but keep the slack from dropping onto the imaginary fly as you demonstrated that feature. Thanks for the content

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with all of us. I remember when I started tying (84) and trying to figure out what each step was from blurry black and white photos in books - videos are so far ahead of that it's not even funny. Big fan of your videos and books and I hope to meet you in person some day. I have a niece that lives in Missoula and she's always on me to come fly fishing, so I'm hoping I can get to the Slide Inn this year. Thanks again Kelly.

Thankyou , With out a doubt , the most informative videos on tying ..good hearted ribbing ,unlike some punks that are finding a venue on KZbin, with idiotic statements /comments about well renowned tier and anglers. Like you, I like the Regal, I have tied with an older Atlas for several yrs ( gifted to me ) , and truly reminds me of my first Datsun pickup I had. I started with an AA knockoff .. Truly looking for that last Vice .. one that the grand kids fight over, was never really a really good tier, but now relegated to the bench more than river due to health ..

I am paralyzed with almost no hand function and I started to tie flies about 3 months ago. I use a vary basic vise. Mostly I do saltwater and bass flies. I want to upgrade to a vise that rotates to help me make sure my material is even. This video is helping me narrow my search. Thank you for posting.

Great two part video, thanks Kelly. You really explained the function of all the vises and actually showed their use. Thanks, really helped me make a decision if I decide to "upgrade" from my knock off model A I bought for $20 back in the 80's. 👍😎

I am 57 and have been tying off and on for a long time, it's like cooking you will never know everything! I am happy with the fixed vise method. That's what I learned on, I have used a rotary they work well, but I am old school. Holding the hook is no problem holding to the table is what it were's out. tell me a good one so I can stop spending money on them.

Very informative. I've tied my first 10 flies. I think a rotary would help with teaching my less dominate hand...

In your store the presentation 4000 says it will tie everything from large musky flies to small flies. Does the traveler 2000 have the same hook holding capabilities?

Joe, pretty much. the vice is a little smaller overall but the jaws will hold, thanks for watching. KG

So what does the C-clamp set-up you are using look like? Is it custom? I like a C Clamp and am thinking it would be nice to have one that sat a little higher so I didn't need to change the shaft to a longer one.

Kelly, is the clouser renzetti rotary vise a one trick pony? I’ve had a dyna king kingfisher for last 20 years so do I pick up any utility with the clouser renzetti? I fish for trout and smallmouth in western NC

Lad I think it is, I have one and really not sure what the purpose is, Ive seen a couple guys tie on the them but I never really seen the reason for a fly that simple to need a dedicated vice. That said the guys who tie on them seem to like them but I don think you would be gaining anything. KG

Kelly, Very informative video. One aspect you did not cover was the ability (or lack of thereof) to adjust the height of the hook so that it is on axis with the vise. Seems like the dyna-king has a thumb screw to lock the height of the jaw. I was wondering your thoughts on this? Personally, I feel that the tier can lock the hook roughly where it needs to be but a finer adjustment of the height (moving the jaw up and down) would be a great thing to haves long as it can be done early and the result be noticeable. Thoughts? Hugues
@TheSlideinn
@TheSlideinn 4 жыл бұрын
Hughes, you know I liked the idea of that adjustment as well but I found I seldom used it, maybe if I was doing more Musky stuff with the deeper gap stuff I would have used it, but for what I would call detail flies I have never found the fixed head height a problem, but I do like the feature. thanks, Kelly

I started with the jaws of a needle nose pliers held together with rubber bands. Necessity is the mother of invention. I used to think that was primitive, until I watched Lee Wulff making his flies without any vice at all. Now that was fairly basic. We're still using patterns that he created though, that's the thing.

Something on streamers. I don't know if any of the articulated flies that they use for streamers in trout fly fishing, incorporate the possum skin material in them? Just checked out a recent interview that Guideline in Sweden did, with a Danish seatrout tyer, named Brian Störup. He went into lengths to explain he use of the American material in his fly patterns for seatrout there. He has some of the patterns on his Futurefly blog, to look at. It appeared as though, the material had useful triggers that proved successful in his part of the world. All best.

KG- I notice on this and your website that you all tie on a renzetti presentation 4000 and was wondering about the difference with one of the master vise series. Aside from more money, they look a little beefier and have a cool looking material clip, but I can’t tell much beyond that. Do they use the same jaws and rotational control? I have used a Dyna King Barracuda for the last 15 or so Year’s and a Regal before that, both very capable vises. Thoughts?

I had a Renzetti Traveler but after about a year I had trouble with the tension knob that faces you. I am a right hand tyer and the left side of my left hand leaning on the vise (helping to adjust materials) would unscrew the knob. After 1 or 2 flies the screw was literally ready to fall out onto the floor. For the "entry level" Renzettis...I am not a big fan of plastic screws/threads....ended up with a Regal Revolution.
@davidaguiar1387
@davidaguiar1387 5 жыл бұрын
A 1/2 drop of low strength (purple) locktite on that thread will keep it from backing out on it's own yet alow you to change the tension when you need to. I tie dozens of flies on my traveler without any change in tension after doing this. hth

Kelly, what's the screw and rubber band by your material clip used for? Also, in your first streamer video I noticed you tied your zoo cougar on a LAW vise. As a vise collector I was wondering what you think of that vise and the crazy prices it gets now a days since they are not made anymore? Also, as a fan of Renzetti I love their vises as I own a presentation 4000 but I feel like even though they were the first they have not really innovated in along time beside refining their original designs several years ago. Do you know of anything on the horizon? I think Stonfo copied the master vise with the transformer but made it unique by being able to switch out the head with ease. Thanks for the videos!

My guess is it's a mod for articulated flies. Kind of like a horizontal gallows. Hook the rear hook through the rubber band so it's not flopping around as you work on the front hook. You can slide the material clip on the vise arm to adjust tension.

So in your best opinion, what would the best rotary vise be for only tube fly tying?? I'm torn between the Regal and the Norvice
@TheSlideinn
@TheSlideinn 7 жыл бұрын
Man Dylan I am just not sure. I seldom never tie tubes so I don't feel qualified to answer this one. All I can honestly tell you is I know a lot of tiers who tie on both and it seems about an even money deal. Might hit up a couple of the tiers blogs to see if anyone has a better answer, but like any vise most will like the one they tie on, kind of a Ford Chevy thing. KG
