I feel like it's highly speculative to suggest SpaceX is going to move away from their current steel production for Starship Superheavy, to something less proven, that might require entirely new tooling. Remember, they chose this steel because it's stronger per mass than the alternative materials in the various temperature regimes that the ship has to endure. More likely they've found places where the ship currently is overly built, where they can shave off excess metal.

It's more likely they've just shaved a fraction of a millimeter off of the thickness of steel they're already using. They might (and this is pure speculation from me) have also found a way to reduce the mass of the heatshield tiles, since we still saw some falling off on IFT2, it's likely they're still iterating on the design of those quite a lot

I assume the dry mass reduction is going to be achieved mainly by switching to Raptor V3 engines. As Elon stated, those are allegedly so reliable that they do not need any shielding. Additionally i suppose this version is going to be an ever more simplified design then V2.

Interesting video. It’s a shame we don’t know why the booster tumbled after separation and why they lost Starship telemetry. For lunar lander variant they may not need the header tanks at all. That is in the design to balance weight and such for the flip maneuver and reentry in atmosphere. None of that is likely needed on landing on the moon. Wouldn't be surprised if that whole part of the system is stripped out and replaced with a docking port or something. Now, that being said, there is a bit of light atmosphere on mars, so that's a future problem. Also when they try to make a crewed version that WILL land again on earth, they will once again need to address the safety issues with it potentially, as they would need a header tank possibly for that. Could you imagine being on board a starship while it does the flip maneuver...

@ianjuneau7022
@ianjuneau7022 6 ай бұрын
That is a good idea but it likely wouldn’t work as well as you would hope. The Nerva engines run on liquid hydrogen, so you would need to add another tank and propellant which is a lot of mass. Also, the Nerva’s do not produce enough thrust to make orbit. They are an on-orbit engine, so they would still need Methalox and raptors for orbit. I haven’t done the exact calculations, but I would imagine that it is similar dV if not way less than the regular starship. But the Nerva will be revolutionary for payloads if they can get some operational!

3D printed tanks suffer from poor material properties because printable alloys are pretty much casting alloys like A256, and it's ONE GIANT WELD. The metal grains are horrible, there are voids and poor dimensional control, the finished part is too damn big to Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) to crush the voids, and the minimum thickness that can be printed is far greater than the tank walls need to be to sustain the ullage pressure. If you get ONE power glitch during printing of a part, the whole thing may need to be scrapped. Oops. On the other hand, the skin-and-stringer construction used on Starship is a mostly additive process using high-strength material with excellent microstructure, with the knowledge gathered from more than a century of industrial experience of forming and welding similar structures (but it isn't flashy and the buzzwords are old-fashioned). Parallel workstations allow large modules (i.e. the rings) to be built quickly and inspected before assembly of the modules; if one is damaged it can be scrapped and replaced.

After enough experience has been gained and enough thought has been given to the issue of humanity in space, we’ll probably abandon the idea of long term living on the surface of hostile planets and moons. Optimal living conditions for humans will likely unfold in a highly engineered self-sustaining mini-planets of our own making in orbit around all kinds of celestial objects. Super large cylindrical capsules of steel and titanium. Something like 30 miles in diameter, 300 miles in length, and 200 feet shell thickness rotating around an axis to generate gravity like force on its walls where human habitat will take place. Houses, farms, parks, nuclear power stations, propulsion systems and other amenities will be all contained in these capsules. Of course, such capsules will probably take thousands of years to build. We’ve got time. Life on earth will probably be possible for another billion years. Humanity will move in all directions utilizing the resources of dead planets. Of course, if and when a super suitable planet for human habitation was found, it will be colonized. Earth’s moon and Mars? I don’t think so.

By ‘v2’, he really means something like v4 or v40 depending on how granular you want to get about it. Point is, this is largely meaningless marketing b.s. In other words, it’s Tuesday for Elon.

@@gryph01 , we’ll, Starship V2 is probably due any time now, but I’m not getting excited about it until V1 works. (BTW, should we be calling it V2? Because it looks a lot like another V2 I remember . . . )

I'm sorry I'm so stupid Elon. But I can't stop thinking about all of this . Like how to get it up without an explosion to push it up. Can't you put it up through a different kind of movements

SLS is done after its contract (if it can make it), is fulfilled. Would you buy a Ford Taurus, or a A6.. They have 4 more missions?? than guarantied done. The should only be giving support, hardware, software, availability, etc to X. The SLS (like you have said in previous episodes), is a complete waste of money. NASA will never be done. They started this whole adventure, but will never again be the leader. So just provide services to firms that can now complete their goal. Wow, I can go on and on about this. but its so obvious. Thanks for another great episode. - Will

I have been saying it for a while that they need to reduce the weight and size of starship but review of a no-wealthy guy like me is a noise to people. You can't bruteforce space/rocket science.

Starship "V2", eh? Slightly unfortunate connotations in designation terms. Might be worth opting for a less "nazi" name for the upgrade. It's important!

V2 sounds good though, people should be able to make the difference between V for "Version" and V for "Vergeltungswaffe" (Vengeance weapon).

If it wasn't for the V2 rocket science would be farther behind. V2's were liquid fueled (LOX and alcohol). A modified engine was used as the first stage of the Mercury rocket.
