When most people think of luxury eyewear, they think of fashion brands who are big in clothing. But the two don't always correlate, so in this video we're exposing the manufacturers behind the brands, who license those names for big money.
From Luxottica to Safilo, Kering to Marchon, we look at the world's biggest eyewear manufacturers and provide some advice on which are the best quality + the ones to buy and not to buy.
Not local to us? No problem! Check this link:

Interesting video Rob.... Having worked for Kering, Marcolin, Marchon, Derigo and Safilo (twice) I can honestly concur with the majority of your opinions... I've now moved back to MODO and ECO eyewear where I will stay until I'm too old to carry around large sample bags! Keep the videos coming mate they are very good and full of accurate information about the world of optics and in particular eyewear brands...

How interesting. One question for you. Regarding acetate, does quality also mean lighter or it is it more how they look and feel?
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory Жыл бұрын
Good question. The quality can actually refer to a few things - the age or make-up of the original acetate, the time put into the finishing and polishing and the embellishments. Better quality acetate tends to be heavier, actually, but better finished acetate tends to feel lighter and softer on the face. For lightweight acetate frames, it's super important that the material is pre-hardened and finished with metal-to-metal joints on the hinges otherwise it is likely to chip or crack. An example would be the Airlite frames from Anglo American Optical - compare them to the thin acetates from Oliver People's and I think they are superior for a slightly lower price.

We filed a report to the European Union on this company as it clearly has a monopoly which is forbidden under EU law. Furthermore, the company he most wanted to buy was Maui Jim, and they told him to f*** off. So then he tried to buy the factory that made the Maui Jim frames in Italy and failed. Maui Jim of course are famous for their real glass sunglasses, rather than plastic. Eventually the EU will get around to breaking up his company, the sooner the better. He simply obtained the license to the brand and then destroys the quality of the glasses but maintains the price levels so for example Ray Bans that were worn by pilots years ago were the real deal. What you would buy now is way inferior. Not happy with that, he then starts to own all the retailers like Sunglasses Hut, for example.

15:47 The only Tom Ford eyeglasses whose T on the temples line up are.... Made in Japan and made from titanium. I have 2 pairs of Tom Ford made on Japan and made from titanium frames whose T's line up. They are also extremely comfortable. On the other I bought a pair of Tom Ford black acetate glasses made in Italy.... And they are extremely uncomfortable to wear. One temple puts a lot of pressure on my ear that ends up giving me a headache. I have tried stretching them, I had tried to have them professionally stretched.... And the THICK acetate does not bend, or if it does is goes back to its original shape. I have worn them a handful of times due to how much they irritate, and hurt my ear. And yes, the T does not line up.

I got Ray-bans because they have great deals paid under $400 for classic avators and wisbang trabnsions that normally go for close to $800. And the frames are perfect nice and smootgh light, strong ayet bend to my massive autistic head with out springs... Something no one at the time could match and while Ray-ban got bough much like Jeep did my gales are the diract desendent to the OG civil Avator's unlike yours which are less Jeep/Bronco/Land cruser and more G-Wagen, Defender(Ofcourse current model years) Which is fine... But for my first frames I wanted the OGs(atleast OG brand) not an off brand... Which I choose avators as that is an imagine I want to be and they have always looked good and fit me.

95% of me is: "I hate the loss of quality and originality that inevitably comes when a shareholder-focused megacorporation buys an artisinal maker". 5% of me is: "I'm in New York for f's sake, I should be able to try on more than 1/20th of IC! I’m very curious on your thoughts on Akoni eyewear. I have found the quality of their Balmain eyewear to be actually quite decent and the designs to be very unique, and it makes it better that they use pretty decent quality Japanese acetate and titanium and precious metals such as palladium, platinum, white gold, and yellow gold. I have no idea who their lens manufacturers are though, so I couldn’t speak too much on the lens technologies. I also think it’s a decent addition that they have decided to go green by using renewable resources not only from their acetate, but all the way down to their packaging. However that last part has nothing to do with the quality of their eyewear, but I would love to hear your thoughts. And if you genuinely think it is good or not don’t be afraid to speak your mind.

Take for example Carrera. After Safilo purchased Carrera in 1996, the same year ALL production was moved to Henan, China. On the other hand, Persol was bought by Luxottica in 1995, but to this day, Persol sunglasses are handmade in its historic factory in Lauriano, Italy.

I discovered your channel like 1 month ago,I like the content and the way you’re direct to shitty brand that many think are expensive and are made with poor quality poor materials,you’re saving our ass for paying for basically a logo,so thanks for that,in the other hand I’m frustrated,because I own a couple brand that are made by Luxottica,I own 5 Tom Ford sunglasses,they’re unique in the design but knowing what I know now I’m not happy with Tom Ford,thankfully I was buying those in discount and not retail price,I also own 1 Persol ,1 Ray Ban aviator stile with gunmetal frame color and blue reflective lens,1 Dior,and after watching your channel I bought a Cartier Santos de Cartier Model CT0166S 005 ,again not retail price,I paid under $300 new,and today I bought one pair of MOSCOT model Lemtosh with custom made tint in Purple Nurple,I’m trying to buy now glasses that are independent and not own by luxuttica ,is going to take a while probably,I can’t afford to replace all the ones I have.

I always buy new frame a year, but I always like slightly bigger frames now these days. My prescription is -6.5 , but I sense that bigger frame vision quality isn't that great. Is it that 1.74 plastic lenses has more distortion and maybe I should look at glass frame rather than plastic?
@thespectaclefactory

It's not the material, it's the lens design. What lens type are you wearing? Pretty sure with SmartLife or ClearView for example you would get great vision in a large frame

@@thespectaclefactory true, from what I understand( I could be wrong) persol is made semi independent from the rest of the others. I believe that they are also still made in the same factory.

I get we don't like Luxottica, but I have heard nothing but good things about Oliver Peoples and pretty much anyone that owns one says it's some of the best eyewear you can get. I'm not sure what to think. I agree Ray Ban has lost a step, but my Persols still feel excellent. How much is actually deserved criticism for Luxottica and how much is just hating them just to do it?
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory 3 ай бұрын
I don't really hate on them. They aren't bad frames. And they have been getting better recently. Their cult following is both good and bad; it's great that people are passionate about an eyewear brand, with some of their styles being particularly iconic. On the other hand, it is a brand which in my experience resonates with people who don't have a clue about quality.
