I'm on day 4 of my trial. I have one lead for the lumbar area and one for the cervical. LIFE CHANGING! I have had zero pain since the first day. The thought of "zapping" my neck was incredibly scary... but I'm glad I went through with the trial. This video scared me when I realized the patient was awake. I was sedated, thankfully. Best of luck to all of you considering this procedure!

Had my SCS installed about 4 years ago. I'll never forget when I woke up. I felt like I could fly! I didn't realize just how much pain I was living with until most of it was gone! I've had about 75% pain reduction and am extremely pleased with this! Those who are weary should do their research. It's really made a difference in my life. I don't know this Dr, i live in Florida. I just wanted to see the ins and outs of what was done. Oh and as to the actual surgery, the first week was hell but after that, you're good to go. I felt like I was a teenager. I suffer from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome since 1988 after being struck by a car while riding my bike. I also suffer from Compartment Syndrome which is very painful. I've had 30+ surgeries for my leg. Nothing, including pain meds, did anything for me. After going to pain management, my Dr suggested the SCS. I had the trail done, and it was a miracle. I could walk with no pain after 30+ years of chronic pain. Two years later, on Jan 29, 2024, I had it put in permanently. I've had it almost 2 months, and I'm a new person. @lane20632 жыл бұрын
I’ve had mine for almost two years. One of my many spinal issues is an incredibly narrow canal. This was discovered during the trial when I was “awakened” in tremendous pain. The dr told me on the follow up visit that I scared the crap out of them when I jumped and yelled. Of course I was under Versed so I don’t really remember it. I had a great result but the doctor said he wouldn’t do the permanent implant due to my exceedingly narrow anatomy. My spine surgeon installed a paddle which is much larger than the fine leads. It’s basically a laminectomy and I spent three days in the hospital. I’m happy I did it as it gave me relief. Unfortunately L2-L4 has begun to collapse over the last 15 months so we’re looking at a two-level fusion later this year. I’m fused up to L4 and have been dealing with chronic pain for 30 years.

What is your pain caused from? I have scoliosis/kyphosis, stenosis which is worse in some areas more than others, and I feel my pain is caused by a major failed back surgery in lower spine with much scar tissue and a small pool of fluid. I've just had my neurosurgeon/ pain specialist recommended this to me. I really hope the insurance company approve it. It's been about 5yrs since my accident & I've had a few non invasive/ low risk treatments so far. 3 simultaneous nerve ablations and two sets of scrambler therapy both treatments had decent improvements in pain levels. but we're sadly only effective for a short timeframe. Hopefully this procedure will give some long term improvements and I won't need as many pain meds. I'm sick of having to drug myself into oblivion after I mow the lawn, play with my kids or lift anything & the thought of being able to sleep in the bed next to my wife without medical aid instead of in my recliner, drugged into unconsciousness isn't something I dared to hope for. Maybe this procedure can make that a real possibility.

After a decade of crippling back pain, I had one put in about 15 years ago. The doctor said that it would "stop the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain". It was a joke. It functioned like a Tens Unit (electrical stimulator used in physical therapy). I couldn't believe what a crock this guy had sold me. I'm glad other people here have had good results but I caution you to really look into it before getting one of these things. Eventually my back got better several years later. At what spinal levels (e.g., L1, T12, T11, etc.) do the leads enter at? Can the entry point be changed depending on the patient (due to the location of pain, or previously implanted hardware, fusion(s))?
@lane20632 жыл бұрын
I think for the trial the insertion point is around L1. The permanent surgery could be different. I had a large paddle implanted so the incision was T9-L1 (give or take). They basically do a laminectomy to make space to insert the paddle. It was a much bigger surgery than I expected and I spent three days in the hospital and had a couple weeks of recovery. That said, it was completely worth it.

I truly hope I get advice as working heavy gas power equipment in mud, 5 hrs. later I couldn’t take it. At 6’3” tall, it was not my job but quit, went home, took some advil went to bed. I woke up and felt like the worst sunburn in my life. As the oldest on a farm, I know! I was sent to a Dr. who told me that I turned many muscle groups in my back into scar tissue. Bone fusions started. 2 years I went back to fixing cars. I have had fusions to the L2, RFA, and on hydromorphone 8mg 5 times per day, yet getting worse. The only relief I had was 3 epidurals that only lasted 2 days. I could stand, walk, reach just normal, then it returns, the L5-L2 burning as I move about just standing, bending and reached the chair and within 3-6 minutes of sitting, burning stopped. My GP was getting no where fast. Between him & the Epidural Dr. sent me to the same pain specialist who did my bilateral RFA. Leads placed at T8-T12 and day 3 of 6 day trial, I was getting relief. I rated it at 60%, then 70%. Then snip and remove. Insurance gave Auth. and a permanent implant by Medtronic’s was placed. I was surprised to feel the tingling going down my backside into my legs, ankles and heels. Medtronic’s rep called this first time to ask how it was going, I told him my butt, legs & calves like sciatica. His response was “That’s Great”. I reminded him my pain was above the belt up 7” and it got real quit! Nothing they could program or change can make it go up! Just down. I ask him to ask his main office for support or colleges if they have had this and fixed. No word and it has been 3 weeks, nothing but burning pain in low back the size of small football. Leads are right where they placed them but now silence! I can walk, bend, reach or make it to my mailbox. Neighbors make fun of the guy using a cain while mowing his yard! I am sick to my stomach that I am getting nothing. Confuse? You bet. They did not wake me to test area of sensation during trial or placement before sending me home! Now what?

@@suzannesmith7272 The trial is 5-6 days. If 60-70% better, they contact the insurance. They won't re-use the electrodes because part is outside the skin. I have L5-L2 pain at had 60-70% relief and was working. A month later, they claimed they place the electrodes in the same spot T8-T12, chosen from their anatomical chart, waited 4-5 days to heal up and the stimulation went down into my heals they my legs. NOT up where pain is. Back wards? Seriously. No one could explain! 30 adjustments to settings, engineer made changes but still nothing above the belt. They used the insurance company again to let the replace the electrodes thru more scar tissue, turned on and now sideways from left to right. Engine got it changed last Monday to vertical on right side but 4-5 inch right of spine, so close but no cookie. Don't know because no one have contacted me. I am jealous of people walking by my house or mowing yards. We get snow, now what! I have no clue what they will do now as my GP said they missed a step during first surgery as placement is key. They wake you up and provide a local, but the device company is supposed to ask where you feel it to test somehow. I feel cheated, early 60's, tall guy who can't walk to my mailbox. No clue except I wish I knew more before first, ask questions and had positive results. It is 2 days until Nov 2022, almost 11 months, they got paid, went on vacation, had fun with families and a couple of birthdays & friends, but I sit and pay dearly is carry anything than 8 lbs (Gallon of Milk is 8 lbs.) and get yelled by wife as I don't fix the house repairs! Long walk on short pier? DK. Auto Tech, ASE Master 38 years. No can't change my oil....

I'm in discussions with my pain specialist to have this done and I'm nervous and I don't know what I want to do. I was told that it may help with the numbness and aching in my leg but it may not help with my back pain. I had a fusion done on my lower back in July 2021 and I have been in pain every since I woke up. My latest MRI revealed I have 2 more bulging disc, 2 more herniated disc, and spinal stenosis. The majority of the day my left leg aches and is numb all the way down to my foot and I suffer from chronic pain in my back. A lady told me that her husband had the surgery done and they hit a nerve and he's now permanently paralyzed. Another person told me they had to have 2 inserted. 1 for his back and another for his leg. A few people told me they had to go through the procedure more than once because the device stopped working

I've had a laminectomy, and need another in my lower back. 4 level fusion in my neck, twice. Now titanium plate is broken in my neck. I don't want any more spinal surgeries. I still work full time construction as a pipefitter. My medication works, 2 pills a day. I feel that he's about to drop me as a patient and I'll lose my meds. I had a 3rd surgery to clean out marked L5-S1 foraminal stenosis. The surgeon fused L5-S1 but post-op MRI showed I still have marked foraminal stenosis. I was told fusing the area would put less pressure on the foramin but I have increased pain and function since my 3rd surgery. I really do well with a TENS (I hate narcotics!). My fear is that Medicare only covers it once in a lifetime. I truly believe it will help but I also feel I need the foraminal stenosis fixed first. I can’t walk, stand, or wear shoes without awful pain. Just standing long enough to brush my teeth is a chore that requires 20-30 minutes of laying down to get my pain back to tolerable level. I can’t live my life laying on a sofa, I used to LOVE exercise and dancing, no more. I do want a piece of my life back. Any suggestions anybody??? I’m trying to get in to see another surgeon for a second opinion, they really don’t like taking patients with 3 back surgeries.
