Fascinating - thank-you! I have visited remnants of the walls and will see more when I am back in Thessaloniki. I expect that I will be watching and rewatching this wonderful overview of the city’s past.

I didnt understand why was the Golden gate demolished though. It seemed like one of the best parts of the walls....

The gate was demolished by the Ottoman administration of the city in 1874 as since 1868 the main street of the city leading to it had been widened and the entrance to the gate was shorter and created a narrowness. Its ruins were used as raw materials for the construction of buildings in the port city's. The gate was a Roman building of the 1st century

@@LondonPower It's really disappointing that it was demolished for such an unimportant reason... Greek cities like Thessaloniki and Athens could had been a lot prettier if their modern history was different. And I dont blame only the Ottomans for that, but Greek polititians as well, once most of the Neoclassical buildings of Athens were destroyed in the early 20th century, and many neoclassical buildings of Thessaloniki were burnt - I think - during a big fire in about the same time period... Thank you for the info!
