Bus Camping In The Rain

A basic camping trip to dust the cobwebs off the bus. First one of the year! I experimented with a little awning and had a relaxing night watching the hockey game. Nothing too exciting this week, but I've had to stay close to home to get people paid designs to workers at the house.

Panasonic GH5 isn't a bad choice, dual SD and lots of them going second hand these days if you want to save a Canadian kopek or two. You would have to get lenses and all that though. They have a degree of weatherproofing along with some of the lenses that you can get for it too, which would be good for all the stuff you get up to!

I tried to convert a minivan but found it was too small and so was a pickup box but your idea of converting a school bus is perfect and the space leaves room for a small fire stove or oil furnace or even both! Cool bus! When I was a kid the family had a bus we lived in for a while when moving across the country. My dad took out all the seats and bolted 2 bus seats facing each other with a regular table between them. On the outside they painted the whole thing with brown exterior house paint with rollers and brushes. Even painted over the stop flashers. They used some tie wire ( like for concrete work ) and strung it along above the windows along a series of self tapping screws and hung curtains on that. Lastly there was a plywood stall restroom in the back corner of the bus. Inside it had a 5 gal bucket with a lid under a toilet seat. Not something one would want to use unless they had to I suppose, but convenient.

We tried magnets with our tarp and bus too, but no matter how strong a magnet you use or how many the tarp ends up providing enough leverage in wind or rain to pull them off. We ended up using D-rings attached to the bus with well nuts, carabiner clips and a heavy duty tarp did the trick. Lots of tie outs are a must on windy days. Keep a set of telescoping poles too for emergencies. Also get yourself a 30amp plug to 120 adapter. $10 and it's worth every penny.

Steve, i always look for obvious solutions...like using the windows to hold the tarp. lower them slightly and pull the outter seam of the tarp inside and then close the window on the tarp enough so it holds and doesn't leak...just a thought. Love the videos. Thank you!

You could also put paracord through the tarp grommets and tie big knots on the end, or tie a stick or something on the end, put the cord through the window and close it, the knots will keep it from sliding out thru the window, and you should be able to close the windows all the way and avoid any leaks.

You said it.. having a hard-sided shelter is such a great thing for a certain kind of camping. Never having to worry about an aggressive animal (especially when I'm traveling with my dog) or a big job tearing down camp is wonderful.

If you like camping in cool, rainy weather, I'd suggest the Pacific Northwest. We've had a cool, wet Spring this year. I live in Oregon and the snow level last night got down to 4000 feet, so you might even get snow in the higher elevations. BC probably has been having some similar weather. Maybe the Kootenays, the Cascade Mountains or Vancouver Island would probably have similar conditions. Good luck!

That was a nice camping trip but it wasn't long enough and I really wish it has rained more. I love camping when it's raining out and sitting around a campfire with a hot cup of cocoa and marshmallows or a hot coffee. 😊😉

Haha I love your videos Steve, the first one I ever found was when you went camping in the storm drain under the road. I've watched all of them since! It's really cool watching you "get away with it". As you were setting up this awning with the tarp, I couldn't help but think that maybe you could rig up some kind of roll-out awning with a spring and tarp, sort of like the ones they sell with RV's and such. Or if you could get one second hand, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard at all to attach to the bus. May have some issues with aerodynamics but I wouldn't imagine that bus hits any speed worthy of ripping apart structural integrity lol. Sure wish I could visit some of these beautiful places you camp at. Stay out there, my friend!

Hi Steve. When I do potatoes in aluminium foil I always dump them straight to the fire for about 30min and they always comes nicely. Try it next time

Steve begs an interesting question when he’s using power for his bus “is this even camping anymore?” To which I say yes. I used to have this firm belief that camping was doing everything without modern amenities and no electricity. With the exception of a flashlight and lantern, I was doing everything in a tent and cooking over the fire. And that definitely is a super fu nets to camp. But camping can be done in an RV, in a trailer, with a raft as a roof, or just sleeping under the stars. I think the basic principle of camping is choosing to leave home for a while, disengaging with the hustle and bustle of day to day life, and choosing to enjoy nature. Camping is a form escapism and it shouldn’t be gate kept. I’m not saying Steve was gatekeeping it, but we can all agree we have met the person who will call to us rude name just because you use power or choose to use an RV. Camping should be fun and should be done at the pace you’re comfortable with. Regardless of how you do it, so long as you enjoy and respect nature, escape from day to day life for a little bit, and most importantly enjoy yourself while doing it.

"Camping is a form escapism" Couldn't agree more. "Getting away from it all" is the heart of camping. There will always be people heading out into the boonies with less equipment, unless you camp naked. 😆

The question gets interesting when you talk about virtual camping. You can have all the aspects of cerebral escapism, all of the physical sensations of being in nature, and on the grand scale of things being inside a wood house isn't any less in nature than sitting on the lawn. Steve you can use an extension cord plug-in to mount on the side of the bus so you don't need to run a cord through the window, it's clean looking and is water proof.
