This vid made my toes curl. What an incredibly convincing Tone from this budget lightweight Boss amp. Tone-wise I cannot personally find a good reason to opt for the heavier more expensive SLO other than bragging rights and snobbery... Fantastic job on this video, Studio Rats, thank you!!!!!

I have the Katana Gen 3 Artist combo and I've been using the power amp in with my ToneX pedal and it's glorious. The fact that you can also emulate the types of tones you are getting with just the Katana is mind blowing. Kudos to BOSS for always pushing the boundaries, and also to you for giving us these awesome videos.

@MarkCoffin2 ай бұрын
@jackzango7134 I go from my guitar mono into the tonex pedal, then from the tonex into my hx-stomp for delay/reverb, then from the hx into the power amp input of the Katana, effectively using the tonex DI (head only) captures as my main tone source. It's awesome.

Nicely done. I have four Katana's. They're crazy inexpensive but I assume that if they start going downhill it won't be easily repaired, so I wanted a backup. I play a wide range of styles, and that amp does it all. I prefer my own pedals through the FX loop, but that's me. I've never even been to the Tone Studio online. I've seen my 100W MKII hold its own admirably against a Marshall stack ON TEN. Incredible.

Ha! I actually favor the recorded Katana sound over the SLO. Sounds more open, with better lows. Not sure how those lows translate to everything fitting in a big mix, but it's good that they are there, so that they can be taken out (vs. not having them).

@deltafit3 ай бұрын
I'm listening to this through good PA speakers and I can say the difference is night and day. The Katana is good. Plenty of body and mids. But the Soldano has wayyy more clarity and much more detailed high end. I can also see you have the treble down slightly on the Soldano so there's more room for that high end if needed.
@jackzango71342 ай бұрын
Yes but you do realize that if you're comparing a digital amp to a Soldano tube amp you have to say just for the reason it's so close that it's excellent! Without reservation
@eNosArmory2 ай бұрын
I should hope so... its comparing a $600 digital amp to a $4k tube amp... the fact that the Katana can even get in the ballpark of the Soldano is amazing as to how far Digital amps and modelers have come. If the Katana got even with or better than the Soldano then BOSS would have successfully destroyed the guitar amplifier market with a $600 digital amp. Imagine where we will be with these amps in 10 years. You'll probably be able to spend $300 on an amp that will sound exactly like all these high end amps.

@eNosArmory Exactly and like it or not Digital is coming and Analog is going. I'm an old dog and I have plenty of experiences lugging tons of equipment to gigs that didn't pay much at all. LOL nowadays you can have the katana and just take that with you and you got everything you need for a gig

I have a Katana 100, but my amp just doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the sound you're getting from yours. I honestly am starting to wonder if there's something wrong with my Katana. Just trying the Lead channel (with everything else at defaults) like you did at 1:50 in the video, my amp just doesn't seem to have nearly as much gain. Sounds boxy and lifeless. I've tried two different guitars, an RG and HSS strat. Anyone else have this problem?
@Callisto196917 күн бұрын
@kevinthompson4229 - One key difference is the Paul was recording directly from the amp. On the front of the amp we can see he had the Line Out mode set to “Rec”. This makes a big difference to the tone. When set to “Live” the tone is similar to the sound from a Katana Cab, whereas Rec sounds much fuller and with more saturated gain. You can get the same comparison by plugging in headphones and changing the Line Out mode of your K100 in BTS.
@kevinthompson422917 күн бұрын
@@Callisto1969 Thanks, this is spot on! I actually tried playing with headphones yesterday after I posted my comment. I was SHOCKED at the difference. Through headphones on "Rec" I get a sound that lines up with Paul's sound in this video. The "Live" setting is a bit closer to the actual speaker, but to me it still sounds quite a bit better. So I'm not sure what to think now. Does the Katana speaker just not sound very good? Could it sound a lot better through some other cabinet?

I've never been able to get a thick sound out of a Katana. It was always thin and anemic and very digital at times. I've yet to have a Katana last more than a year without breaking down or having problems. The Soldano has a much richer and fuller sound to my ears. It's response is faster and has no latency when I played one whereas the Katana was not as responsive and had a noticeable latency. I've used Boss products for over 20 years and generally like them and their reliability. But the Katana just doesn't cut it in that department. I also didn't like needing a laptop to get the full use of the amp. Live, the room changes from night to night and venue to venue. I had to use a laptop to EQ everything for each venue which was a pain. The artist model helps with some of that but I'd rather just have a simple amp without digital circuitry and be able to make changes in the fly without fooling with presets. Thanks for the great content.

I suspect the difference would be substantial as the volume increases, my grandson plays in 3 metal bands and uses a Mesa Dual rectifier into a 2 x 12 or a 4 x 12 with v30's because he has to tear down and setup 3-5 times a week, I bought him a 100-watt Katana thinking it would be OK for practice and he could just leave it in the trunk of his car, and use the Mesa for gigs and Katana for practice, long story short it doesn't have anywhere near the low end or power of the Mesa....not even close. He used it once. Having said that I played it and thought it sounded OK, not great but I much prefer using my Marshall DSL 40. He likes the sound of a Mesa; I like the sound of a Marshall, and the Katana doesn't have a sound of its own so you have to measure it by how close it can come to sounding like so other amp, that should tell you all you need to know.

I think he was just matching it to the soldano since he won't get the same tone my turning the SLO down. Having said that Rob Chapman found out that the channel gain and volume and the master volume do affect the tone slightly but not in a tube amp way it could be how the power amp is designed.
