The fact that someone or some bands inspire a band or a person doesnt mean that someone and some bands automatically become first death metal band or first death metal album. If so, Slayer should be the very first Death metal band, as they influenced hundreds and even thousands of later death metal bands, much much more than Possessed. Furthermore, this direct riff comparison allowed us to distinguish which album is more similar to 90s death meral albums. Last but not least, Possessed second album became pure thrash metal, while Death sophomore effort. is much more progressing towards what nowadays called Death metal. In fact, death metal is Death 's metal

Both are cornerstones of Death Metal, and indeed I think they are the firsts albums that increased the intensity of Thrash towards Death Metal. Furthermore, To call Death or Possessed thrash would be a misunderstanding of their sound. however, this period of Death Metal lasted about 2 to 3 years, because in 1989, the album that really shaped Death Metal to the way we currently know it was released, Altars of Madness. So ,when I talked about Death Metal and its first albums, I always considered Seven Churches, Scream Bloody gore and Altars of Madness to be at the same level of importance. Of course, there were other Death Metal albums, EPs, demos, released in between the first two and Altars, such as Season of the Dead, None Shall Defy, etc, but , Possessed, Death and Morbid Angel ,were the bands the truly did revolutionized the genre, each with their own contributions. greetings from Lima - Peru.

Totally agree. Possessed from a thrash position began with ideas that lead to a new genre. Mantas and afterwards Death is the culmination of that process. From there: habemus death metal. I disagree. The overall atmosphere of Seven Churches, some of the weird song structures, vocal style, solo structure and execution, definitely has more to it than can just be considered thrash. It's the very beginning seeds of the death metal genre. Black Sabbath and Priest don't sound very similar, but both are heavy metal right? Possessed is a death metal band, man. "But it has a lot of thrash in it " so does old Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel.

You should know better considering your age. Possessed coined the term 'Death Metal'. Possessed was the first band who called themselves Death Metal. Chuck was a big fan of Possessed. '7 Churches' was literally billed as Death Metal and was released 2 full years before Scream. There is no debate as to which came first it is historical fact '7 Churches' came out first. Death and Morbid Angel along with Obituary and Bolt Thrower ended up shaping the scene but Possessed was first. Its not even debatable.

Possessed is the first Death Metal band, Seven Churches was in 1985 and Scream Bloody Gore was in 1987. Possessed also formed a year earlier in '83 when thrash was still trying to find it's identity, they did it in the Bay Area alongside Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel and Metallica, while Death was inspired by Possessed and formed in Florida in 1984 after Chuck saw Possessed in concert and heard Jeff Becerra's vocals. Seven Churches is death metal-esque, but it still retains a good deal of that higher-pitched, more party party and optimistic flavor that thrash metal has, which derives from NWOBHM, and ultimately, pentatonic rock and roll style riffing, whereas much of SBG is low, murky, chromatic and charnel- sounding, so I have to give it to SBG myself. Possessed's 1984 demo was entitled "Death Metal" as well - Onslaught might have still beat them by a couple months, though. Might have been a term getting tossed around quite a bit in the early 80's, thanks to Venom, which beat them by just a little more, though Venom was not quite what would be called death metal today. I love them all! I don't think it was a race that any particular band was winning by being first, so much as it was a movement of young people with similar ideas and influences, who all arrived at the scene about the same time and played off each others' ideas and energy to create an extreme metal that would get pigeon-holed into more consistent/homogenized styles by labels and producers later on.

As someone who didn’t live through it, and can only listen retrospectively I hear a lot of similarities bw bands like Venom, Bathory, Sodom, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Kreator, Possessed, Necrophagia, Morbid Saint and early Death. With each band expanding on the drums, vocals, and riffs. What really begins to distinguish aggressive thrash and death metal is the riff style and the vocals. Death Metal drops the full power chord riffing in favor of more single note tremolo chromaticism. When they do use power chords, it sounds like they drop the octave, only keeping the 1 and the 5, and use the power chords as transitional riffs, whereas thrash uses fast power chord riffing throughout. This is exemplified in your video. Death Metal also uses a full death growl versus the death bark or thrash yell. For these reasons death metal is on the verge of bursting with scream bloody gore, but doesn’t come to its true form for me until Death’s Leprosy, Amon’s demos, and Morbid Angel

Man I still have these on the OG Vinyl. I’m partial to Possessed as I gave that more time and was into the satanic stuff more. I’ve later really come around to Death not that I didn’t like them just never gave them the time I gave others. Great vid thanks…..Regurgitated Guts brought me back to long time ago.

I'm a big Death fan, but Seven Churches to me is more iconic. I feel like that got me into Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel and so much more. I actually liked Leprosy more than Scream Bloody Gore. Death however has the best album to album progression. One is always better than the last and all are fantastic. Love your vids my man, you have the best taste in music and guitars!

I’m not getting involved which was first or better, these two albums take me back to a time when it was all new and mind blowing. Another great vid my metal brother 🤘🖤🤘
