Okay, here's what really floors me about Jeff. By his own admission, he was way behind Kerry as a guitarist when the band started. He's on record saying he had to learn fast. Yet it was Jeff that wrote most of Slayer's best songs. Goes to show, it isn't what you know, it's what you fucking do with it! RIP! JEFF! SLAAAAAAAAAAAAYER!!!!

He had the most creativity and memorable sounds but Kerry was the workhorse of the band and made sure they sounded extremely tight on record, playing 90% of the guitar tracks in studio. Riffs like Piece by Piece really show his dedication to rhythm and intensity.

Metallica was generally more likeable for masses. Clear vocals, mostly neutral lyrics, catchy and melodic riffs. Slayer is the band that didn’t step back at all, in every aspect. Whenever I play a song that i enjoy, from a metal band I feel like it's got a more solid structure and it's more uniform , or linear, so to speak. Once you get the groove it's guaranteed that you'll have a good time on the guitar. But fuck man, metallica riffs are just on another level, the change-ups are ridiculous and the rythm itself is so fucking creative that I am always in awe, even after a million playthroughs, wondering how the fuck did humans come up with this shit? As an aspiring musician myself, it seems that what metallica does is beyond the capabilities of our species.

Hetfield all day everyday. The right hand down picking, the riffs he wrote, plus the singing. Not to mention he’s done more for metal than almost anyone, and he was one of the greatest frontmen of rock history. He led Metallica to become the kings of thrash metal and really saved the genre as a whole. Brought metal back to what it really should’ve been during the 80’s.
@danielgebar4 жыл бұрын
Lucas Shelton It’s kinda apples to oranges. Slayer was far more akin to death metal than thrash. Some people even consider them the first death metal band. That being said, Jeff Hanneman’s riff writing is FAR superior to anything put out by Herfield, but I guess we could say that’s all subjective and based on opinion. I like death metal as a genre more than thrash, so maybe I’m a bit bias.

Daniel Gebar I mean, I can’t argue with that. You’re not wrong, it all comes to to preference. Both James and Jeff have brought great music to the table. @@drew3030 haven't seen a single one. I mean, good riffing is when you manage to pull powerful attack and low-end punch out of the guitar, when your riffs are crushing and easily readable at the same time. That is about amp settings, correct palm positioning for palm-muting, while precisely integrating into the song rhythm at the same time. Of course it's about composing too (Slayer are terrible composers, and Raining Blood is mostly terribly composed song). The thing about James Hetfield that makes him exceptional is that he was the first metal guitarist who managed to get amazing in ALL these areas. The second one was Jeff Waters from Annihilator, then Dimebag Darrell from Pantera (Dime is literally the best riffer in metal ever). Well...most of Metallica's best riffs were written by Mustaine. It's not that we're hating on Metallica, it's just that we don't believe the hype. Hands down, any time, any place, Hanneman is a better guitarist than Hetfield. Slayer is a better band than Metallica, especially during the 80s era. Currently Slayer isn't the same without Jeff or Dave, but they still hit you in the mouth much harder than Metallica and can still be called a metal band. A metal band who is doing Bob Seger covers kind of lost track of what metal is, and people who looked to Metallica for quality metal take issue with this because they simply don't produce metal anymore. Has nothing to do with being seen as mainstream. It has to do with a former metal band calling themselves a current metal band and playing radio rock n roll in place of metal. That would be like Slayer covering Lynard Skynard....just not metal. To put it in simple terms, Metallica is the Nickelback of the big 4.
@m4assassin9763 жыл бұрын
@@laurenfazenbaker9777 you sound bitter bro and i do not agree that any of the big four are better. And mustaine only wrote kill em all riffs and 4 riffs from ride the lighting so your wrong about that. Metallicas most recent album is better then the last 3 albums megadeth have put out, and anthrax sucks, and slayer has never had as many good songs as metallica. Plus who cares if they did covers of bands and songs they like, it doesnt make them any less metal the lead singer of cattle decap said he listened to britney spears the entire time he wrote Monolith of inhumanity, and that didnt make it any less heavy. The dudes have inspired more heavy metal bands then any other band in history and you have to respect that forever no matter what you think they are now. This was really good . James and Kirk are a part of my childhood. However if it wasn't for Hanneman and King I wouldn't have picked up the guitar back in 97. Decade of aggression taught me a lot. Then you did a Chuck Shuldiner vs the world..Yngwie locked and loaded . Yeah I subbed.

Hanneman no doubt is the winner of the axe battle. Hetfield can sing and play so kudos but Hanneman was able to write and play sick guitar solos too. Cant say that for Hetfield.

james is a very competent musican. if he wants to he could play lead, piano or drums. but he happend to be one of the best rythm guitar guy while singing at the same time. also the slower melodic solos are usually done and performed by james. anyway both are good musicians. and music is not dick waving contest.

Challenge : Put on your headphones,crank treble 100% full,put bass on 70%.. Now listen to the whole "SOUTH OF HEAVEN" album all the way through.all the songs..concentrating on the two guitars only..the one will be in your left ear and the other in your right ear....then listen to the master-piece of guitar playing...the hand-offs between riffs between the two players..the guitars are never both on both sides at the same time..they are always split up..Kerry in the one ear and Hanneman in the other ear..listen to the riffs while the one guitar is doing leads and the other rhythm ..then when they switch ......also the difference in tone and pitch between the two guitars...very well done.
