ultraviolence proved that born to die was not a fluke. lana was the real deal, had something to say and was here to stay. thus, a legend was born.

Mhm the album after a success is so critical. Just like any movie sequel just cannot match up to the original right. Like billies new album or tranquility base after am. Good album but not as ubiquitous

@skinnylegend-7330 Жыл бұрын
I think that released ultraviolence after born to die was such a smart way of solidifying her stardom. Btd gave her the sad girl aesthetic which captivated attention but she was ridiculed for being shallow and lacking depth, songs like lolita, this is what makes us girls, without you. too saccharine and vapid. ultraviolence leaned really heavily into the sad girl aesthetic but completely departed from the pop-radio friendly more shallow sound of born to die and showed critics her diversity and talent

I screamed when I saw this video was out, because Ultraviolence is SUCH a masterpiece and I truly believe that we can see, to this day, the impact it has had on Lana's career and the rest of her discography. As someone who is absolutely fan/obsessed/fascinated by Lana del rey and who just can't shut up about her because of how emotionally intense her music is to me, I am so happy to see that you use your analytical skills to talk more about her. Please do this kind of video for each of her albums! Also, your outfit fits this album perfectly :)

I 100% agree with what you said about artists not needing to be a teacher or role model for those who listen, it just limits and offends the spotenaity of the creative process and the personal experiences and views of those who make the music. People tend to put everything in black and white, right and wrong, forgetting that there are other visions of things, and end up not giving a chance to actually see what that artist is saying. And the biggest proof of that is exactly what you said about how Lana subverts power by “choosing to be submissive”, and therefore evoking a seduction and “coolness” that makes her even quite powerful.

When Ultraviolence came out, it was hard for me to understand where she was going with the concept. I was such a Born to Die stan that it was difficult to get used to the new sound, but over time, I truly think it’s one of her best. I agree with you that NFR is #1, but I easily think that Ultraviolence is second. Lana was truly ahead of her time with the album, and she wasn’t getting the flowers she deserved, but thankfully she is now.💕 I’m really excited to hear your take on Honeymoon, I think it’s her most underrated and slept on album, since it is sleepy in nature. But I absolutely love it.
@mlancholia3920 Жыл бұрын
ultraviolence is lana’s statement to the music industry that she doesn’t give a f*ck and more than happy to express her artistry as she desires. i still remember the feeling of being blown away by the sudden tempo shift of west coast and that electric guitar bridge in shades of cool like it was yesterday even though that was like 9 years ago 😭 EDIT: I love your insightful analysis especially the way you address the contradictory nature of Lana's mind in an objective manner which highlights that you really gets her, looking forward to your Ocean Blvd album review soon!

I can listen to this one back to front and the story/aesthetic is very concise on this album and it doesn’t feel bloated. i also remember the honeymoon being the follow up and I wasn’t feeling it at all after how amazing i thought ultraviolence was. im going to revisit honeymoon though because im grown now so hopefully i can appreciate it more.

Ultraviolence came out right when I hit puberty. It was my (if I might say so) national anthem. I played her music from the moment I awoke till I slept. A true album that had shown so many her absolute genius. I was consistently writing whilst living in a dormitory. The stories from those days are stained in my memory. Just like her music always will be in so many minds alike. ❤

I’m a somewhat new Lana fan, I started listening at around November 2022, and really really got into her in January this year, I was (and still) am listening to music almost always due to some personal struggles and reasons, it’s escapism to me. I still wouldn’t call myself a full Lana stan, I still haven’t gotten into Honeymoon or Blue Banisters. Still getting into Chemtrails and Ultraviolence. Norman Rockwell is my favorite album. But now that I’m really experiencing the Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard album, and the 2 singles have impressed me so much (especially A&W- one of my fav Lana songs all time now). welcome me to the family

Alright hmm… so for like 4 years I obsessed over this album and era DANGEROUSLY. I was living as Lana in that album specially in my head even tho I had never been in a relationship or done drugs or done anything wild lol. I had started writing a lot of poetry about the type of men UV inspired. It’s kinda funny but I think that eventually led me to automatically get attracted to pretty melancholy dark and mysterious boys. I fell in love with the most pathetic one of them and obsessed over him for a year even tho he didn’t appreciate it in the right way at all and that damaged me so much. I’m not gonna blame Lana for it obviously. It’s just that, that album had such a huge impact on me, I actually had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way, which I assume Lana probably had to learn too. Also, Cruel World is my all time favorite LDR track.

Ultraviolence was the first- and I mean THE FIRST- album where I asked myself, "Music can sound like this???" It's still my favorite album of all time. I was 14. I have a VIVID memory of taking my parents into the living room to show them this new single called West Coast that I really liked... 9 years later it's in my top 3 LDR songs of all time. I was on vacation with my fam when the album dropped, told my dad about it, he still loves all of the songs... just *this morning* he texted me "I want money, power, glory." :) Like father like daughter. I don't think there will ever be an album that makes me feel like I'm on a hazy beach where the music seems so far away yet so close at the same time, which you mention in your video. An unreliable narrator with complex emotions who takes you on a journey and you can't quite get to the end- maybe you never will. That's what life is all about to me.

I was so obsessed with the album but it’s one of the few albums I revisit quite often. At least 1-5 times a year. I don’t even really listen to her as much anymore as a whole but this album has a special place in my heart. Ultraviolence, Brooklyn baby, shades of cool, west coast, money power glory, fucked my way to the top, and Florida kilos are all songs I still regularly listen to. Also I think it’s such a timeless album. Whereas bts while really good really sits in a certain time period.

Some tracks from the "Ultraviolence" sessions were remastered from 2014 to 2017 for further release, which never happened until October 22, 2021, where 4 tracks from 2013 were released on Blue Banisters - "Living Legend", "Cherry Blosssom" ", "Nectar of the Gods" and a reworked version of the track "If You Lie Down with Me". But the tracks “Fine China” and “Wild One” were originally planned for Blue Banisters.

My fav Lana album is ultraviolence, it resonates with me on a visceral level, whenever I'm having a bad day I just press play and let it carry me away, but I think her best album by far is NFR. Back in the Mid-Century singers like Lana were called Torch singers. They sang in smoky lounges about sadness and broken hearts.
