I really hope the live-action movie takes inspiration from "Legally Blonde," not only tone/aesthetic-wise (campy, pink, and stylish with a blonde protagonist) but also in the message that girls can be both smart and feminine at the same time.

I’ve got to say to me, Barbie is a feminist icon. She’s a glamorous, hard worker, can do any job she sets her mind to, gets glammed up for herself, and is strong and intelligent. It’s Barbie’s dream house. Not kens. She’s independent which is something I deeply admire. And when she wants to, if she wants to, you can give her a boyfriend or girlfriend and she can spend time with them when she wants. To me she’s a woman in control. She works hard, and still takes time for herself. As a girly girl who grew up in the early 2000s, it was so popular to hate in femininity. I received so much negativity for loving pink and being feminine and not like Avril Lavigne. I was more Britney, and Barbie and Britney always reminded me that I am strong, smart and capable. That just cause I’m feminine and like feminine things that doesn’t make me less of a person or stupid and that I’m not shallow. And it’s okay that I’m not the “not like other girls” kind of girl. I’d look at this glamazon and think wow…. She’s badass.

Barbie has always had more diversity of look than a lot of people realise. While there is a canonical version of Barbie as white, blonde and American, I think the idea behind her has always been that she can be whatever the player wants her to be and they have always tried to accommodate this to varying degrees over time. The original Barbie doll was released in both blonde and brunette versions. Throughout the 60s she had no fixed hair colour, sometimes blonde, brunette or red, and often the same doll would be released in each. Gradually they started doing more blonde versions than others. In 1978 they released the first dark skinned Hawaiian Barbie. In 1979, the first black Barbie. (She's had black friends since the 60s.) Throughout the 80s, while she was still primarily white, blonde and American, they started releasing Barbie in black, hispanic and other ethnicities. Like with the hair colours, some dolls were released in multiple versions, including the Day-to-Night and astronaut dolls in the video. Skipper and Ken came in these variations too. They also did many international Barbie dolls, including East Asian, Indian, Native American etc. So while there was the standard Barbie, girls who wanted her to look different were accommodated too. I'm glad they've now added different body types to the variety. Even the multitude of careers was probably more about her being able to be ANY one of those professions that the player wanted her to be rather than her having done ALL of them. Unfortunately, I think the public perception of Barbie has become one not of "she/you can be anything" but "she/you can be everything", which has created an image of toxic perfectionism around her that permeates everything from her face to her figure to her careers to her obvious wealth.

She may have a friends of color but all my barbie dolls had white features. Unless you have a celebrity Barbie doll or historical Barbie doll she had white features so to me personally growing up in the mid-90s open to the mid-2000s when I started realizing that that gave me concerned because I said my doll doesn't have certain features like me that a black doll should have. I understand dolls cannot look like people I very much understand that. But the fact that former black Mattel workers have said for years that they literally would just paint over the faces of the dolls and they even questioned why couldn't they make similar features to a black girl. But I do agree she did have friends of color and people seem to forget that a lot of times. It could be because also she used the same two people Christy and Teresa.

"It may be too strong to call Barbie a feminist icon and a trailblazer". Or, it might *NOT* be too strong to call her that. I have collected Barbie dolls continuously since I was a kid in the 70s. I have been with her from the era of Quick Curl Barbie and Malibu Barbie through the wonderful SuperStar Barbie era, through the explosion of collector dolls in the 90s, all the way to today. To me, Barbie always represented an idea that in retrospect is rather subversive by the standards of the day: *You are the center of your own life.* Not your boyfriend, not your husband, not your kids. You are. Husbands and boyfriends and kids aren't bad, but they're just a few among many options regarding what your future could look like. And Barbie always maintained longstanding friendships with other women, who shared everything rather than competed with one another. My first Barbie doll that wasn't a hand-me-down was actually Barbie's friend P.J., and it's still one of my favorite dolls to this day. Barbie's friend group was inclusive, and starting in the 80s, Barbie herself could be any ethnicity or nationality. I still love the International dolls of the 1980s, though I usually remove their rather kitsch 'dolls of the world' costumes and redress them in glamorous 80s fashion ensembles. Some of the names haven't aged well, like "Oriental Barbie" and "Eskimo Barbie", but at the time they weren't controversial, and the dolls themselves are stunning. All in all, I think the criticism I hear about the Barbie doll is usually a reflection of each person's individual perception of what Barbie is, rather than whatever she was intended to be. At the end of the day, she's just a product that was sold to make money, but what she means to each of us spans such a wide gamut that she at least succeeded in one thing Ruth Handler specifically wanted. She intended Barbie to be a canvas that the child could project onto. For me, that projection took the form of admiring the glamour and beauty alongside the inclusivity and empowerment and self-determination. For others, it was an excuse to denigrate femininity itself, in the guise of being 'feminist', as paradoxical as that sounds. And everything in between. Barbie really can be anything.

I think that Barbie being blamed for eating disorders, unrealistic body standards, and racism is just parents' ways of shifting the blame from themselves and their bad parenting skills onto something that children enjoy. It's basically similar to how parents blame video games for violent behavior coming from children. It's just adults using toys as scapegoats instead of admitting that they themselves might be at least one of the many reasons why their kids are depressed or have other issues.

Lol that's what i always picked up of Barbie, is that she has so many careers (which always made me wonder how her schedule is like), and as a gay man, i found that inspirational, so i never understood where these beautiful standards came from (maybe it came from girl talks), but it was confusing that Barbie's values weren't the main topic. And it's sad that some people were still projecting misogynistic self-loathing towards her even in the 2000's, where they made the computer animated movies, the topic of friendships, family, and ownership of their own lives were still over shadowed by superficial stuff like body image and material gains/status (which isn't all that bad since i like her style and fashion). I think things has changed when they made a KZbin channel for her. People should definitely watch it, especially kids, bc wow, it gives great advise. I've seen Greta Gerwig's movie and i love them, but didn't know who she was and that she was the force behind those masterpieces. I hope that the movie showcase Barbie's values and depth, and that it's cohesive by having men and people of color living being equal to one other (regarding status).

@@lydiafayre9806I’m all for analysing pop culture. I’m not trying to stop anyone from analysing media, that’s one of my favourite things to do and talk about. (I could talk about and analyse Barbie all day long, believe me!) What I meant with the comment was that as a doll collector, I get frustrated when people try to demonise Barbie and paint her as the epitome of anti-feminism and female oppression. She’s really not that harmful, and a lot of times people do seem to blame larger societal issues on her. I didn’t mean “stop talking about and analysing Barbie *because* she’s just a doll”, I meant “stop blaming larger societal issues on Barbie *because* she’s just a doll. Barbie wasn’t sexist, she was revolutionary for women in many ways, but she also isn’t a feminist icon with some higher agenda. At the end of the day, all Mattel care about is making money, which I think inherently contradicts the point of Barbie being feminist (because any real change that does come from the product is just an afterthought). To sum it up, this comment was born from frustration from past experiences with people demonising Barbie. It didn’t really have anything to do with the video (other than the caption) since I have yet to watch it. I’ll admit that it was silly of me to make such a harsh and impulsive comment without even having watched it first, and I’m sorry that you got the wrong idea from what I said. @@eleegee I read it through, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness, and I agree that if anyone actually blames Barbie for sexism then they're dealing b.s. I don't think that's common in actual discourse like this video though. I think there's nuance to how Barbie is framed by that corporation that uses her just to make a profit, because we can't simply extricate products and art from the social and material realities in which we live. Demonizing barbie is silly, and often sexist itself--which doesn't negate possible sexism on the part of the creators. Stuff like this is often complex imo.

While I understand some of the problematic aspects of Barbie, she was always a feminist icon to me. She was a NASA engineer and a veterinarian. Seeing a woman, even a doll, in those roles really lets you believe that you belong in that world too. (Of course, there should be more intersectionality.)

It truly astounds me that even having been assigned female at birth and raised a girl how litttle I aziraphale relate to barbie and the various other things society says I’m supposed to like or relate to as a girl. Deep in my soul I don’t think I’ve ever really been a girl. I wonder if anyone else shares this experience. Can we have no binary barbies? I wonder what that would look like. Can we have barbies whose bodies reflect those of gender diverse people? That would be amazing!

The truth is that Barbie doesn't need Ken even in real life !! Women don't need an man to take care of them !! They can do everything independently we just need to give them much more freedom and equality !!

That Lisa Simpson bit is so true because Barbie tried to enter the Indian market and it felt like cultural appropriation and a very narrow definition of an Indian Identity that still exists.

it's interesting you mentioning what she's best known for. in my country, (UK) she's known as the absolute legend that is Donna Noble in Neighbours can't wait to see her in Barbie

Your acknowledgement of Margot as still being considered a bombshell seems to have some contradictions to the other video about Margot, specifically designed to state that she goes against that bombshell stereotype or managed to dodge being typecast as such. Also Greta will always remain behind the 8 ball on feminism, as long as she uses white women's problems all the time.
@mynameisreallycool12 жыл бұрын
Well, she's a white woman herself. Some people say that white women shouldn't write stories for women of color, because racial bias and lack of knowledge and experience can make the story feel very unrealistic and unrelatable. Not that I agree or disagree, but that could be why she only writes about "white women's problems". I blame Hollywood for only focusing on the problems of women who are white, not one woman for not writing stories from the perspective of every woman of every race and instead just writing what probably feels a bit more familiar to her.
@JulietteKernDiamond2 жыл бұрын
I don't think a white woman writing a black womans story would be well received. Write what you know and all that. I could see her collaborating with more poc in the future though I think that would be good.

When I was a kid in the 90s, I NEVER liked playing with baby dolls and even though family members gave them to me as a birthday gift I’ll never played with them. I played with Barbies and imagined how their life q will be as adults. I was never intended to be a homemaker or a mother and it is ok. I will always love that Barbie helped me find that being a mother and babies were not the only thing that I could be.

I grew up in the 00s, and I really feel like a lot of media in that era tried to convince us that being a girly girl was somehow wrong. Like Pink's music video for Stupid Girl, where the little girl chooses between playing with a Barbie or playing with a ball as a deciding factor for whether she will become president or a stripper. Barbie just isn't a negative character. She is a positive portrait of what a woman can be, not a definitive version of what she should be. Of course, she could be improved upon, maybe use the whole colour palette for her wardrobe and accessories, but otherwise, she is good.

I didn't know there was a Barbie movie in the works! I'm looking forward to it. I grew up with Barbie, and have always been a fan. I loved her careers and knew she was a doll. Many dolls have strange proportions. Like the oversized heads on the Bratz dolls. I never thought I should actually look like that.

I'm so excited about this movie, I loved Barbie growing up and still do. I used to play that my Barbies were very good in their English classes (English is my second language) and were preparing to go to Harvard medical school. 20 years later, I graduated from Medical school (sadly not Harvard) and speak 4 languages. I never bothered with her figure or the fact that she was blonde and blue eyed growing up, I liked her clothes and imagined what my world would be like when I grew up.

Hey, thanks for creating such great videos! I'm a longtime listener but I have a request. I'm sorry, but have you guys considered increasing the volume of your videos? Or put around the same volume. You guys put the introduction and then the vignette suddenly boomed out of nowhere. That also includes mid ads that has a higher volume. Overall your videos have a lower volume on youtube. I can't watch your videos on my laptop, for example, because even if I put max volume I have to struggle listening. And then when you guys play the sponsored part the volume goes back to normal again and I have to increase and decrease all the time. Imo, you guys have to hire a sound design. Some of your other videos (teen mom for example) has a normal volume. Thanks for listening and I look forward to see more of your content!

*RENAMING/REDEFINING SEX/GENDER TERMS* Since the beginning "females", "women", "woman" have been stuck with the stigma of being identified by the opposite sex. Sure there are terms they can be identified with that give them individuality such as: she/her, lady/girl/gal ect.. but the official biological sex terms are still reliant on the "male" gender. *MY PROPOSAL* FEMALE replacement: luna - lunar means moon in latin and the moon in both wicca and yin and yang represents feminine energy which is also associated with; water, calmness, darkness. MALE replacement: sol - solar means "sun" in latin. The sun is represented as masculine energy in the wicca & yin yang laws as with chaos, fire and light. This way each sex/gender would have their own unique identity and not have to worry about stepping on each other's toes/being dependent on the other to be identified with. =) BONUSES TRANSGIRLS replacement: stella - stella means star in latin and it's still under the feminine umbrella since stars appear only at night. TRANSBOYS replacement: nimbus - cloud in latin and it's associated with daytime thus falls under the same umbrella as the sun masculine energy. You're welcome.
