Rich or not, a real friend does not divulge your secrets, especially not for his own gain. I enjoy Capote's writing, but he was a real jerk and a lousy friend. The swans were right to dump him, cold.

He was a standard misogynist that didn't see women as people so much as consumable items - but he was gay, so instead of trying to sleep with them, he found other ways to use them.

I dunno. He was vulnerable. It’s not like the couldn’t have sucked him in to convince him they were his friend abd avoid being exposed. Sure he probably got dirt first. But he clearly was torn about revealing the depth of their depravity . They were not even aware of that in my opinion. Hey we’re to self centered to really give a shit about poverty bigotry sexism and real pain Babe had it and she was relatable to Truman. He was never really relatable to her no one was not. Even her own kids got that kind of empathy and compassion.

You wanna know how classy Jacqueline Onassis was? She wasn't upset about what her sister said about her, she was mad at Truman for betraying her sister's trust.

He hated jackie oasis because she would not suffer him at all. She was too smart for that. That made her enemy number one in his eyes. He was a pathetic little creature.

She was probably perfectly aware of what her true relationship with her own sister was, and didn't see it as being anyone else's business - regardless of how honest or dishonest capote was being.

Lee Radziwill's competitive relationship with Jackie led to marrying a man who was essentially a minor Polish aristocrat who had to ask Queen Elizabeth for permission to keep his title. But the title was superficially impressive and appearance is all that matters in American high society anyway.

I do like the costumes and the locations of the show. It does feel a bit like 1960s Gossip girl but I do feel they should have built up Capote realationship with Swans before the article so that way the audience can feel the betrayal more. Naomi Watts is doing a good job as Babe
@RenataSantos-qw4pz9 ай бұрын
Truman Capote is the only writer whose life I am interested in knowing more about. His end was grim. He didn't seem capable of loving anyone more than his writing and his mother who is claim to have wished to belong to the high society and was rejected by it.
@donfontana82829 ай бұрын
And yet he was deeply loved by all of these women but that wasn't enough. At some point you have to take responsibility for your own actions. And you cannot use the way your parents treated go out and hurt people.. He knew very well what he was doing. He was a pathetic person not because his upbringing but because he chose to be.
@Mloofylicious8 ай бұрын
It was a mutually beneficial relationship where these women treated him like a playful poodle that was sufficiently witty for them to let go of inhibitions and dish out secrets to him without considering the risk. On the other hand he was a gay guy in an age where it wasn't easy to be. Anywhere outside that gilded bubble he'd be doomed to homophobic harassment. Add to that his need to be something more glamorous or reach higher than was possible for someone of his position at that time in America and this is what you get. These women were pathetic gold diggers and got backstabbed by him. The unfortunate truth was that he needed them instead more than they needed him, since they were his golden ticket to the high society. The only genuinely good piece of work he did was in Cold Blood. Breakfast at Tiffany's is more famous for Hepburn's role in the movie than the text it was based on.

The reason Joanne Carson did not take offense to what was said about her and her life in Lacote Basque 1965 was because the whole world already knew it... So technically he have not embarrassed or disclosed anything that would hurt her. Not so with all the other women. Their lives were private and he only knew about them because they confided in him. He also went a lot easier on cz in the story. Much of what you discussed about her in the article was already known.
@DianaAmericaRivero9 ай бұрын
The latest episode, the one with James Baldwin, is the best one of the series so far. They say there's always three versions of the truth: yours, mine, and what really happened. So far, the feud is pretty one sided - Truman betrayed these women. This last episode presents another facet of the truth - these women exploited Truman (and others) for their own amusement and the dog just happened to bite back.

@cherylkavanagh33877 ай бұрын
I believe that exploitation was a double edged sword in this case. Capote exploited the Swans for his needs and they exploited him for theirs. For the most part, probably equitable exploitation (if there is such a thing). However, betrayal is an entirely different matter. Capote had not written anything in years and had been give several deadlines and some generous advances by Random House to complete Answered Prayers, which he was struggling to do. Having all of that juicy gossip in his back pocket was just too tempting, in my opinion.
@SometimesPerplexed9 ай бұрын
A bit of a wrong note when you allude in passing to David O. Selznick’s wife without naming her considering that she, Jennifer Jones, was a highly successful film actress in the forties and fifties. She presumably introduced her husband to Capote after getting to know him in connection with “Beat the Devil.” and was at least as instrumental as her husband in inviting him.

A bit disappointed that they dont have Gloria Guinness or Marella Agnelli in the show (budget constraints i guess), but in general its a solid show. Its likd a gay version of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, telling us not how it was but how it should have been.

the swans wanted perfection so badly they did everything they could to look gorgeous day in and day out throwing lavish dinner parties and decorating massive homes around the globe. they held a lot inside to make themselves believable to the world. the one place they believed they could let out their darkest secrets was with this little man with the funny high pitched voice who was intelligent. they all knew he was IN with their circle and he made each of them feel special. i still to this day do not understand what he was thinking or what he thought the reaction by these swans and their husbands and families would be. you can say they used him, but at that level of wealth and the high society lifestyles and the odd perfection they each portrayed to the world he was a perfect safe friend and women and gay men are known to make excellent friends. his writings about them seems treasonous, absurdly hurtful, deceitful and the list goes on, but thats the level of outrageous betrayal and total lack of consideration he displayed. babe held everything inside. most of those women did. and jacqueline bouvier did the same, as wonderful as i believe she was she held a lot inside. i met jacqueline, lee, babe, pat buckley, william buckley and truman in my time in NYC and for truman to do what he did eludes me. the pain he brought those women, they never ever brought him pain, they adored the little guy bc they also believed he adored them. he was a great listener. and a voyeur like andy warhol only vicious.

Why is the emphasis placed on the personal relationships? Of course, from the perspective of these rich and entitled people, Capote was a treacherous snake. But in my book, Capote risked everything to show that these 'giants' of society had in fact feet of clay. He made us see what was behind this facade of glamour and pointed at the emptiness of these vacuous and gossipy lives, biting the hand that fed him in the process. This might have been all revenge against the same cruel high society that ostracized her mother in the first place. Serves them right!

Truman broke off with Lee because she wouldn't testify for him in a civil case brought by Gore Vidal. Vidal also sued William Buckley.
