Glad you enjoyed it. There was a ton of other areas of this exercise that I had to cut to keep this around 20 minutes. There was an entire section on an HT (VX-6R threaded connector issue) failure that I had related to APRS and had to fallback to the Kenwood D710 mobile rig in the Jeep to send my messages out. I also left out the After Action Report, but we covered this in the member live stream on Monday. I appreciate the support. Enjoy the weekend.

Great video! I was camping last week and while activating a park was having serious issues with RFI with my DigiRig and laptop. After about two hours of troubleshooting I found one of the mini banana plug connectors on my Buddipole Deluxe had failed! I removed it and added a ring connector. Problem solved, park activated twice, and my first time doing it with 30m. As always thanks for sharing and I look forward to the next video. 73!

Thanks, Sean. The DigiRig has issues with RFI especially at the higher power levels. I solved my with ferrite beads and by running lower power. Glad to hear that you worked through the problems. That's part of the game.

I'm enjoying seeing your growing appreciation of JS8. It's my favorite! 19:25 - JS8Call uses a large dictionary of common words which it encodes to save transmission time. The word "GREAT" would be in the dictionary and being a common word it would be a short code. "GR8" is probably not in the JS8Call dictionary so it would be sent as "G", "R" and "8", which would require more bits than "GREAT".

Well done. This was my fifth Field Day and my second as a CW operator. I mostly did search and pounce because that's the low-hanging fruit. But I ran a frequency the last half-hour of operation on 40m NVIS and added some close in contacts to my log. Boy the pressure ramped up when I started calling CQ FD. But the callers were patient when I asked for repeats and it wasn't really much different than running POTA or SOTA, in the end. POTA and SOTA activations are a good way to develop operating skills. Great rig & setup... I've owned five Jeeps over the many years afield. Currently, I run a 2010 JK 2dr Manual, up in the hills of Idaho. When afield, I tent to use a simple 'Shotgun!' station, consisting of a simple cut piece of plywood, suspended from the headrest and grab rail. I have an iCom IC-7000, running at 20w, mostly CW. Either a CW Morse SP4, or Bamatech TP3 paddle. A PackTenna EFλ/2 (10-40μ) tossed into the heights of a conveinent tree. Bam! Operating from within the cab of the Jeep, proves more comfortable... Build yourself a 'Shotgun!' desk. Trust me. You utilize the same field craft as you would outside. Same equipment, no cold wet backside, or heat exhaustion. Love the Jeep! Your Yaesu Manpack! Always enjoy watching your videos, they give me a lot to think about and try. An idea for winter field day “hide amongst the noise”. Can you still get messages out to targeted contacts using digital when the bands are crowded. Or have someone use SSB voice interference over a digital signal (not during field day) to see if messages get through the interference. My thoughts are in a SHTF scenario all frequencies will be crowded.

Been switching to the WARC bands every FD for several years. Didn't think about it otherwise it would have been a good day for a POTA activation on WARC. That could become a thing perhaps, but a lot of POTA stations used FD contacts for their activation's. The video reminded me to get my solar stuff updated.

The WARC bands are great for both SOTA and POTA. I failed to mention it in the video, but I have had more than a few SOTA activations fail due to a contest weekend happening while I was on peak. Good luck with your solar.

Great idea! I spent time with the club’s Field Day op (including overnight) to improve my terrible CW skills. (Side note: At least TERRIBLE is better than NO CW skills.) Field Day is a “good news-bad news” joke. “Everyone” says “It’s not a contest” and “Just get in there at your comfortable (12 words per minute) CW speed. They will slow down for you.” Well… no. They won’t. They didn’t. Gee, I thought FD was NOT a contest. The best after-action comment I heard was that FD is really great; it should happen several times a year. So next time I do a POTA (in CW mode) I will invite others to join what could be a mildly organized event that sort of resembles Field Day. Maybe folks will even slow down for me…

That Jeep is 8 years old now. I really wanted white, tan, or black, but there was no inventory when I bought it in 2015. The Hyper Green paint job needs some camouflage. AFD was meant to be a light-hearted expression while attempting a practical experiment.

On a busy weekend, the WARC bands are very useful for POTA/SOTA as well. I can usually find an open frequency to get my signal out and 60m will get you NVIS, 30m sometimes will, 17m is a lot like 20m, and 12m is a cross between 15m and 10m.

It's become a long, complex planning drill, followed by a ridiculous amount of setup effort for a handful of operators to come out and sit position for 24 hours. If Field Day is NOT a contest, why are there points, classes, and rankings? 🤔 Great plan for Field Day! I usually participate on Field Day with our local club(s), not to make lots of contacts, but enjoy a radio picnic with radio buddies. Typically our club runs three stations and has 12-15 people show up. So there is a lot of social time. About 3/4 of the time there is a QRP station present on solar running CW. 40m NVIS will for the most part go away in a few years when solar minimum hits. Changing operating times and moving to 75m/80m and 60m will be necessary.

I want to thank you for all your efforts. Your passion shows. I personally will pick between two antennas, a HWEF or a folded dipole for NVIS antennas. The dipole is broadband but the HWEF does not require a tuner. EVERYTHING is mission base. The 4 "P" principle applies : Proper Planning Precludes Problems. You can't take it all with you so you have to make wise decisions.

You're very welcome. I run both a linked dipole covering bands and now a WARC tri-bander. It's a great option for lightweight QRP operations. Planning is everything..as is regular training. Have a good one.

Welcome to the channel. It's the IK-PAN-FZM1 by iKey. It completely transforms the FZ-M1 into a sub computer. This little guys makes an appearance in most of my videos (including the last one). It's a clamshell design and mates with the exposed header pins on the tablet. No Bluetooth, so it even works when you're booting it up. It also brings a second USB port. It's worth the $380 USD.

Hey Gaston, I got turned onto your channel by watching the interview you did with Josh from Ham Radio Crash Course. In a past life, I was an airborne radio operator on MC130E's. When I was flying, I never bothered to get a ham license because I didn't see much point in just making contact with another radio just to say hi. Now that I've been retarded from flying for a while, I'm working on getting my ham license, I already have a Marine Radio Operator Permit and GMRS. One of my tasks while flying was to get a landing forecast via HF phone patch, always a pain while flying low level in the mountains. Coincidentally, if you're terrain masked from radar, you're terrain masked from antennas. An idea to add to your training scenarios is to get the local airport wx. You can Google the local airport and look for the AWOS frequency and phone number, then call it up to get the current automated wx conditions. Then you have message traffic to pass to the other station. Anyway, just an idea to give you something to do besides verify the frequency is open. I'm enjoying the videos, keep 'em coming. John Boy

Great video, Gaston!! I participated in the regular field day, and it was a success with all of my TTP-certified gear, lol. I was surprised to make some SSB contacts with the FT-818 using 6W. I primarily used the FT-857D with Tims N9SAB's QRP linked dipole on 20 and 40 meters, and it took about 35 watts to break through consistently with all the traffic. Cheers, and 73!!

It sounds like you had a great deal of success on Field Day with your twin setup. In my opinion, the FT-818 will work, but you'll have more success and fun with a rig like the FT-857 with more power. Pretty ballsy to try recording and trail driving! I would probably drive off the trail or high center. ;) The JS8 work is really interesting. I'm ramping up my work with JS8, although I'm not really a digital operator. However, the use case is good and is a significant part of why I got my license. Is that LIND charger radio quiet? I learned that the GPSr I bought for my computer generates enough RFI that I can hear it on the rig when I'm in the field. I'm going to have to find an alternative that is radio quiet for field use. Timing is critical with digital modes like FT8/JS8 (and others), so having a GPS-regulated clock. I also have one of the original Buddipole Mini charge controllers. The charge profile is incompatible with my Bioenno batteries. I was never able to resolve the problem. (I should try it with the lead-acid batteries I use in my camper...) The Mini 2, however, works just fine with my Bioenno batteries. I love the information from the display and the USB charge port is a bonus. Well done sir! de AG7TX

I recorded most of the intro on the 4x4 trail at 3mph. I am back here quite a bit, so I know this trail very well, so that are no surprises. The channel is also part entertainment. JS8Call has been a game changer for our group for its ability to work in the noise. It's worth the effort to learn. I put off for a couple of years and regret not using it sooner. Good luck as digital modes can be a bit frustrating at times. That's interesting about your Buddipole. I have been running Bioenno's from day 1 and have never had a problem with the v1 model. Your content often influences my thinking and gives me ideas. One thing I'm experimenting with is a lighter weight option for charging my 16v ToughPad FZ-G1 from my PowerFilm panel. I may have a better solution than the Lind, and if so I will add another comment later, but it needs more testing first. I went with the larger FZ-G1 in order to make things easier to see, but the extra weight means I need to shave ounces elsewhere.

Another option that is a small DC-to-DC buck convert that will work with my 12v LiFePO4s. In my environment, the Lind electronics is perfect as they are designed to sit in parked vehicles and can handle the higher temperatures. I'm curious what direction you're thinking of? USB-C PD charging?

A piece of gear that can be handy is a portable power station. I bought a Jackery Explorer 300 last year to power my laptop during a SES I done woth my club. Jackery also has some solar panels to charger the power stations. Haven't got one yet, but eventually I'll get one.

Those are popular, but for my personal use case, it does not fit in the pack. All the gear shown here, minus a small ammo can with miscellaneous gear all fits in my normal backpack. Those would be fine for car camping and would have probably been a good test here. I should reach out to Jackery as they offered to send me a unit last year, but I declined.

For what you did in the jeep, it would be great to have. As for going on a run or a hike, they would be a bit heavy and cumbersome. As for the solar panel, how are you liking the powerfilm foldable? Been thinking about getting one for my IC-705 to use when portable. I do have a Bioenno 120w solar panel, which is fine to use at home when the power is out, but not for portable operations because of its size and weight.

It's actually just the built-in image stabilization in the GoPro Hero 10. It's mounted to a RAM mount on a 1" E-bar that goes the length of the dashboard.

My work here is done. It's good to see that you have an open mind. I had a few failed SOTA activations in the past during other contest weekends and found that the WARC bands are a good fallback. We have a growing group that coordinates on Discord for the members on Buy Me a Coffee. This was the group shown in this video. If you're on JS8Call at "TTP" as a group.

The ridge just next to your antenna, was it East of you? If so, try moving West a bit, maybe a mile or so and try to contact the 4 station again. That ridge might have had an effect?

The ridge was to my North. I have operated all over this National Park and specifically on all sides of that peak. It's hard to digest the data due to all the variables involved in HF communications. As it turns out the four other stations where not on the air during the communications windows I attempted. They came one the air later that evening and early the next morning.

Curious why you haven’t done anything on 60m as it’s the perfect Jump between 80 and 40. It’s usually very quiet and it would be easy to incorporate an extra link in a linked dipole. 60m would be a nice daytime local/ regional band if 40m is congested and it goes it a bit longer at night. It can of course be used for nvis

We're still testing 60m. I need to modify my FT-897D first as it came out before the channel changes in 2014. According to all the HF predictions lately, 60m is going to be an amazing NVIS band. I designed my TTP EmComm Linked Dipole with a link for 60m back in January. There will be a video once I gain more experience with 60m.

Why do you wear black in the desert? Doesn't it raise your body temp considerably? Farmers wear shirts with sleeves, because they retain more body water with it.

I have 20 identical shirts as I pretty much wear the same uniform every day. The heat does not bother me until we get over 110F. Black shirt and khaki pants from Costco is what I'm used to. There are no decisions to make in the morning.
