I like to tinker with computers etc, but when it comes to keep my important data safe, I'm glad I'm still using a 12 year old QNAP NAS. (with double gigabit LAN connection, and still 2 mirrored 2TB drives is enough storage for me..) Works for 12 years now without a single hick-up, and the beauty of it all is that it still gets frequent updates of the OS and security updates! It just works 😊

I have both systems in my inventory. Synology - everything is working out of the box. FreeNAS - required “shaman” dances to make active directory integration to work properly (TrueNAS AD integration does not work at all, so I had to fall back to FreeNAS); required “shaman” dances to make integrated NextCloud to use HTTPS instead of HTTP; NextCloud Windows Client creates nonfunctional icons on the desktop that you cannot remove.

@Rodrigo Roa Duterte and others; here in April 2022, i am trying to understand to what extent "Active Directory Integration" issues impact "Windows File Sharing". Is a TrueNAS Core device (am considering the TrueNAS Mini E) that is a member workstation (in a simple Windows Server 2019 Active Directory domain) able to provide Windows File Sharing seamlessly? What issues if any are there in this context? Thanks for any feedback.

@@peanlim3474, in theory those do work, but only when you try to do something primitive and basic. When I needed to implement structured ACL to folders and files I was forced to do it on a Windows server. Windows domain Active Directory integration reminds me a declaration of good intents so far. If you need anything granular, complicated AND FUNCTIONAL you return to Windows.

Great video Tom. I only chose the FreeNAS path because after experience, I have 'what ifs' in the back of my mind. With FreeNAS if any hardware fails, I can replace them with ease and carry on as if nothing happened. I have to admit, having spare hardware that was perfect for FreeNAS, meant it was economic sense to use what I had. FreeNAS is a time sponge if you don't have network/server experience, but my data has both financial and personal value, so I thought it should be handled by something better than Windows. I'm fairly confident that any non-Microsoft OS could have done the job just as well.

Thank you, Tom, for all your help. You're great! I have taken FreeNAS and loaded it in VMware to test it out on a Dell R815. That was fun. For my smaller setup, I chose the Synology 1819+ and 1817+ as a backup. It was easy to set up, and for 16gigs of RAM in each, and the ability to use SHR 2+ is an equivalent to RAID 6. As you know, not all drives need to be the same size or manufacturer, decreasing the overall expense (I took a bunch of drives out of some desktops I had in storage 7200 RPMs, a mix of 1TB and 2TB drives). Besides, I thought the configuration and little to hands-on experience was a boon. I bound the 4 GigE ports to use LAG, and added a binding pair in my switch, also added the NVME support for caching in the 1819+. These devices also support a 10g + caching PCIe card for upgrade. These little boxes allow you to do much with less, and the software is pretty good too. If I had to do all that on another box, I'm sure it would cost more due to the RAM vs. storage pairing requirements vs. caching (memory tiering) and nonSHR forces a purchase of all drives being the same size /speed, etc. All in all, I recommend Synology for small offices that have a limited budget and less tech experience/ home use, etc. The only drawback is the cost of an empty unit. To be fair, you still need to purchase parts or server build with TrueNAS/ FreeNAS, etc.

Biggest trouble for FreeNAS (at least for me) is that there is not a lot (or any) of desktop size NAS cases out there as nice as the iXsystems enclosures (or synology/QNAP). And being located in remote Australia doesn't help either.. Anyhow, went with FreeNAS because of ZFS about 3 years ago and can't complain, use it for movies, central photos/etc, music and backup. The case I used in the end was a modified Fractal Design 804 with 6x 3.5' drives. I might need to replace them 2-3 more years down the road I guess, unless SSDs will have become on par in regards to $/TB but that might take a bit longer.

good call. Silverstone have some decent consumerish options with hotswap bays ... but Ive questioned whether its worth the extra $$ to go full hotswap anyway. I mean, if a drive needs replacing, just pull the cheapo ATX case apart and fiddle about for 15mins is not the end of the world, hey. Whats annoying though is that many of these new, flash looking "gamer" cases have hardly any 3.5" cages. Used to be that you could jam a tonne of drives in a tower case.

S3 Target: FreeNAS uses MinIO baked in and updates only come when FreeNAS is updated. Synology, supporting Docker, allows you to run the upstream MinIO project pretty easily (better IMO) Containerization: Docker is much more supported and easier to use than IOCages. Although it's true you can run FreeNAS on your own hardware, the supported hardware is a small list; CPUs, HBAs, NICs, etc. need to be thoroughly researched for compatibility. However this is mostly a FreeBSD issue. OSS: FreeNAS is "Open Core", not "fully open source". This is an important difference.
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS4 жыл бұрын
You can run minIO in an IOCage container perfectly fine. And FreeNAS / TrueNAS is open source, open-core model is the business model IXSystmes uses for the monetization of their open-source software project.

as of June 2021 TrueNAS does have a backup solution that has a limited free level of subscription. The same can be said about the Synology email server licensing. You've missed a few things... First of all neither system regardless of the model has enough RAM or CPU cores to run large jails, VMs, or containers. Second TrueNAS is more of a operator or system admin based user interface where DSM is more like a GSuite clone. Emails, word processor, spreadsheets and so on. Sure they are both turnkey but they are meant for different audiences.

I started with truenas because it was free and custom hardware. I now have a synology. It simple, they do the hard work in the software and I don't have to do much to keep my data safe. Also the synology has great apps that just work like photos to replace Google photos. Sure truenas can do similar things with photoprism and other docker containers. And truenas can do backups but it's just simplified and therefore probably safer in synology hyperbackup. Not to mention seamless. The synology photos app is worth it in itself. I do have both but my main data is in synology. I use unraid for my apps and vms because it's so easy and I have a play server with truenas.

Synology Drive with their C2 cloud if you have slowish internet. Data will reside in C2 cloud and download to local synology units for local editing. Then it syncs up to the cloud so everything stays in sync. Or if you have fast internet just use Drive without C2 and one of your synology units acts as the main server. Both work very well and will allow you to only have local copies on your PC/Mac until you are done with them to save local space, or you can permanently pin it to your local machine so you don’t have to keep RE-downloading it from the server. It’s really quite nice.

Just tried out the "trueNAS core OS" today, in a VM, and it looks nice, but uh, upon trying to connect a windows 10 machine to a SMB server I set up and made a user for, on my VM, well, it either doesn't show up or it says my user and/or password are incorrect. I'm not very into the NAS space since I'm still new in using a NAS, specifically for offline data storage usage, for cleaning up my external backup drives a bit, but I followed a few online tutorials, one even from ixsystems themselves, (to the letter I might add) with just changing the names in question, and nothing works, unfortunately. I'm definitely looking at starting to use a NAS OS, on an all in one system I'm planning on building sometime in the future, and want to test some kinds of NAS OS out, but I haven't had good first experience with TrueNAS, aside from the v12.0 UI, which was pretty good looking, like as shown in your video. Someone on their website was dealing with the same issue for 12 months before they installed windows server and had reliable SMB server access in seconds, which really, well, made me rethink spending any more time trying to get it working any more than the 6 hours straight I worked just attempting to get it to work, trying every computer tech trick I know,(which isn't much, for servers) and researching more, and intuiting what I'm doing wrong, to finding that after doing it the supposedly CORRECT way many times, finally giving up, and calling it the OSs fault instead of mine(and possibly a waste of time trying to get it working)

I forget the specifics but it was something along the lines of it was stuck using very outdated version of SMB that was not supported by newer OSes that I was moving to.. and the crypto was using deprecated/obsolete versions as well as I recall - I could have kept it kicking around by keeping an older PC somewhere that could still talk to it and use it for some kind of low-effort archive for ancient stuff, but.. it just was not worth trying to keep alive due to those ancient protocols etc. Anyway, when it comes to stuff like this I'm a big believer in sticking to FOSS at this point.

I was going to order a backup free nas form ixsystems for $21k when I got a synology quote of 9k. Is the free nas a better server? Yes. Can I justify 3x price for backup no. Corp office has a synology negotiated discount

@@engrpimanOK, so one of Synology's business class/rack mount affairs? Certainly $6000-$7000 worth of storage included cranks up the cost.. :)

I have a Synology NAS. I still have my first one which is still performing great. I made my first steps into the NAS world with my Synology DS412+ and i still love it. Very easy to use. When i look at the interface of TrueNAS it's looking more "crowdy" but i think i could find my way around. I'm fairly tech savvy. I'm thinking about buying a new NAS. And i'm thinking of going with Synology because i feel trusted with. I really want a rack version for in my rack but i'm a bit afraid of the noise. Is it really loud? Of course, it probably depends on what version it is? Can someone help me with this? Would be greatly appreciated 😎

I wanted one to tinker with, until I realized I had no real need for storage space beyond even a single drive, much less from 4-6 drives...; I did add three spinners internally just to tinker with storage spaces, pass storage to VMs in Hyper V, including OMV, TrueNAS, ROckstor, ClearOS, Windows Server 2019 VMs, etc...

Question for anyone who can answer, if i want to explore FreeNAS can I load it up on an XCP-NG Virtual Machine and just fool around with it or does it require physical hardware to work?
@alexanderseletskiy47014 жыл бұрын
You can play around with it on a virtual machine. However the production solution would need direct (hardware) access to the drives in order to get the best of it. I think it is the ZFS requirement (please someone correct me if I am wrong)

Linux isn't the same OS like Unix. BSD isn't the same OS like BSD. But BSD is Unix-derivative like: UNIX is the grandpa and BSD is the father, the sons are FreeBSD and OpenBSD, because these OS share the same code from UNIX, but these OS also change a little bit of the code. Linux is only a collection of different open source OS which tries to be UNIX without using UNIX original code by writing their own open source code.

AD integration in FreeNAS is a flaky at best. I had tons of issues in different networks with permission and so on. Users getting locked out of their folders for no reason. Sometimes a simple reboot will fix it but that's less than ideal.

Synology offers a way where we can access from outside the local network, like xxx.synology.me. Does TrueNAS has anything like that?

Why not Qnap? I use Qnap ES1686dc (ZFS) as iSCSI-Storage for server and several TS-873, 673, 473 for backup and shares. I like Qnap OS much more as OS from Synology. This is really ugly and not comfortable. And ES1686dc with 5 Years 24/7 Support cost only one-third of comparable TrueNAS device.

To many security problems (recant one there zfs qnap os had hard codes password) qnap needs a Security code audit (it's that bad you have specific software that targets qnap)

If you pass/move/copy the files/folders, they are stored in NTFS on WIndows once they are there...; there is no way to get Windows to read a ZFS filesystem, be it a single disk or group of disks

Nobody ever talks about the HORRIBLE USB3 performance on ALL Synology devices. What a shame. This seems to be an issue which synology is really keen on keeping out of public.

synology - for noobs, for people who dont know how to operate it but can be handled if it provides a nice gui free/truenas - for experienced user, offers much more robust data integrity, in short if you value your data, you should be using this instead, albeit operating this one is not noob friendly user at all.

Synology-for small business that need backup of workstations, GSuite or MS Office, ability to recover via a gui. For startups who afterwards upgrade to a real server (like Zentyal) and use their Synology as a backup device. Freenas for performance. Man I was surprised how fast Harddisks can get because of the RAM cache. Creating a virtual machine on Freenas can be faster than with a slow local SSD

Actually there is one thing which was not covered - this is the VMs. I'm not sure about Synology - did not really touch them myself when we used them, but a TrueNAS/FreeNAS has the option to run VMs and with the amount of leftover power you usually get in the generic server hardware you can really have some services running on the TrueNAS. I did it and it was actually ok-ish with some troubleshooting it worked. Also there is the physical security that would be nice to compare. Out of the box the TrueNAS and FreeNAS will provide full access to the one who is standing in front of the server with a keyboard (I don't still know how to secure this - anyone has an idea?) My wildest dream however is that TrueNAS is merged with the PfSense and you would have a fantastic Home and Small business solution if you add some networking hardware. That would be a combo box I am dreaming about - a 5 years old workstation with Xeon, plenty of ECC RAM, 10GB ethernet and 4-5 ZFS drives.

Is running VMs in freenas, production ready yet? I tried it at my homelab one or two years ago and it was buggy for home use, not to mention production at work. I am actively running freenas/truenas box and I'd say it's the best to just use it for storage and nothing else. Jails are not set it and forget it, updates do sometimes break them.
@Bismuth2084 жыл бұрын
I’m running FreeNAS, PfSense and a few more VM’s under ESXi on same machine pretty well. If something will happen to ESXi when i’m at least will have FreeNAS (thanks to passthrough HDD’s via RDM). So, you’re dream is not wild as it seems at first, but really possible (kind of).

I am set using my 1821+ for remote work, photo backup syncing, 2factor security is top notch with synology android apps, steam gaming storage, and more. Quickconnect by synology does everything for you and is great feeling to use remotely. Cannot wait to try mail plus, design my website etc...and a ton more i am sure....... and Unraid I use for plex , seedbox, hdd expansion , file storage, VMs. Sorry but there is not one good video on the youtube that properly shows how to setup true nas , or unraid simply in 30 min to an hour. Too many security loop holes if you open your sever to the internet. Get synology its the best in the business for security and overall better polished product vs building your own NAS for free.
@martingerlach_19902 жыл бұрын
Building your own NAS for free isn't really free, because you have to buy and pay your own hardware stuff - such as cache, SSDs, HDDs and more - if you want to do it from the scratch.
