I've been using Truenas Scale for a few months, and I have bumped into a few quirks. Depending on the effort required, I may look into trying Core. I just want a NAS I can set and forget. Especially since I'm currently focusing my homelab efforts on running and maintaining a kubernetes cluster (on a separate host).

I gotta say... Core is unbelievably rock solid. Thought I was gonna be a "scale guy", but I'm simply not there yet. At this point in time, I'll let my hypervisor run VMs and my Core run storage. You know, the way God intended

Would be really interest in a video of why you would choose Core over Scale besides the fact that its more mature or for a very small low/end system.
@pr0jectSkyneT

seconded. Tom did a previous video maybe a year ago where TrueNAS Core had the performance advantage over Scale purely in the NAS aspect (file transfer performance). I'm wondering if it still holds true with the current iterations of Scale. As for my system, I have since moved my TrueNAS Core server from bare metal to a VM in my Proxmox Server. I have chosen not to covert my Core system over to Scale. That said, Scale has a benefit when running as a Proxmox VM as it purportedly has QEMU Guest Agent installed natively, whereas in Core you have to create a script to install and run QEMU Guest Agent after every reboot.

I'm a bit on that boat regarding migrating from TrueNAS Core to Scale. Although I'm just a home user, using TrueNAS to serve some iSCSI targets for VMs and some SMB shares, having pretty much unbeatable stability has been great and has left me always unsure if its time to migrate. I do serve some services publicly, as such I don't want to add another headache. However, the option for proper VM support and Kubernetes is in fact very appealing as a home user.

I would have stuck with Core but tan into issues with VM stability. Regular hangs. Yolo upgraded to SCALE and have been fine ever since. If you have two physical CPUs then I think you want SCALE. Also Linux has better device support.

@@thegorn many people have said it should be run on bare metal. This is also crucial to how the ZFS file system works. I have not installed on any non-x64 hardware or AMD hardware, and it has never crashed, and only time it has lost data was from me trying to do things from command line to move files, which it did not like.

Belated thank-you applicable to this video and dozens, hundreds of others you've made. I always learn something useful from your content. I hope someday to see a video about best practices for upgrading existing TN Scale hardware to new hardware (if a server is failing or obsolete, etc). It may be easy, but I know you'll know and explain the gotchas better than nearly anyone.

Tom, thank you for all your videos. They help a lot. IMO the ball was dropped on the explanation of just what or what part(s) they were deprecating out of the system “in the future”. I thought TN Scale was mature enough for general storage use but now just don't know... I don’t need a fancy box that runs everything under the sun and tries to be everything at once, so TN fits the bill for a system. At the same time, I can't have unreliable file transfer between a TN Scale system which was intended as a backup target for 4 computers and to transfer files over to a QNAP box as a 1:1 storage (not sync) copy of 25TB. I agree with other assessments of Rsync in Scale that it seems to be partially borked and messes up terribly with ownerships and permissions when used with SMB shares generating faults like: “permissions out of order” in windows file manager which I have never seen before on any machine.

Damn, rsync modules gone. I use this at home to backup data (config etc) on all my various devices on to my NAS which then leverages my NAS backup.

Encryption: ''Not a big deal migrating data back and forth'' ... If you can.... Not all can easily do that. Granted that anyone should have 2 other copies of their data but still, to recover back your data you either need: 1 - A full system replication with acls and everything 2- on an array, because if it fails your 2nd option is (for some people) your Cloud Storage which doesn't really mean acl are replicated there. Othewise, of course if you have a pile of 18tb lying around it's a not a ''problem'' but clearly an inconvenience.

@lawrencesystems any chance you do another video/tutorial with truenas scale + new truecharts nextcloud (stable)? (Seems like some options changed, as well as the port been used before, etc!) What happened? The latest update was not going through (restarting did not help, lol) ...what did this newbie decide to do? Let's do a clean install...delete old app and here comes the new! Not even try to push so you can roll back or something. I have put myself in time out already! Well, it isn't working.... Data is double backed up, so no data loss....but no nextcloud for now.... I even did a fresh truenas scale install and just nextcloud to test....nothing.. :(

since S3 MinIO is being deprecated, what does this mean for cloud sync jobs to an S3 or an S3-like (backblaze b2, Linode Object Storage, or other object storage services) target?

Pretty disappointed that they removed Rsync modules. In fact I am pretty disappointed with the SCALE UI overall, although I like the new organization I hope they do some more polishing of the UI, it currently looks very amateur compared to CORE. I will be sticking with CORE for my production server for the foreseeable future.
