Imagine this song back in the day. People with no way to record music and only hearing this after travelling many miles just to hear this. They must have revered these singers as just short of angels. Truly magnificent!

Mozart transcribed Miserere Mei, Deus by memory after only hearing it twice. He then sent his manuscript to an English publisher. At the time, private ownership of that piece was banned by the church. His publication forced the church to lift the ban. Imagine that, though. Only hearing the piece twice, and being able to jot it down perfectly.

point taken. In this particular case the wait was not too long however. Bruckner died after the invention of the record, though I'm not sure how old the oldest recordings of his are.

I sang this in music college over 35 years ago. I still remember every note. Towards the end it was so beautiful, I used to imagine the heavens opening up and taking me in forever. Only music like this can do that.

A better word: they are gifted by God with vocal perfection, just as Bruckner was gifted by God to compose. Gifts of all kinds, some used, some ignored, some using their gifts yet never thanking God. It is always wonderful to hear the results of these gifts come together in works of art.

In 1982, my university choir stood in the spot at St. Florian where Bruckner first directed his choir in this work. We then went into the catacombs below the monastery and stood around Bruckner's casket, with all the skulls of priests lining the wall and sang it again. I cried as I listened to this for the first time. Blessings to you all.

Josephine is defo a draw-card as anyone who knows her face will know her voice and should hence also know that _whatever_ it is going to be very well done. Wish I knew who the man with the booming voice is. He has red? hair and very dark eyes. He has sung with Tenebrae before in _Miserere Mi, Deus._ (I think I got the title right haha). I would _love_ to see an interview with Nigel Short.

Having spent twenty minutes viewing postings from the USA - all of them bearing witness to the sheer lunacy of the views upheld by a significant proportion of the populace; and having, thereby, become increasingly depressed with the state of mankind, I have accidentally landed on this performance of sheer beauty and perfection; a flickering candle of hope in a mad world which seems to have lost its bearings. Where all that is brash threatens to annihilate the delicate, the fragile and the supremely beautiful. I thank you for this, and all your postings on ‘utube’; which, one might tentatively hope, will bring about a wider appreciation of this genre, and in so doing, enrich the lives of those who are fortunate enough to make the discovery. Long may you prosper in your noble work.

Probably my favorite choral work. I go back and forth on these things. The act of assigning supreme favoritism being a temporally discrete one, time itself dictates that the honor cannot last, but there is something in this score and in its beautiful execution that somehow escapes the shackles and bonds of time itself.

@@TinaYWu-lw1qx I guess that is "Baroque" (?)......the choir DOES interpret older compositions as well and perform all pieces beautifully, don't you think?💛Os justi WAB 30, is a sacred motet composed by Anton Bruckner in 1879. Os Justi is a Gregorian chant used as gradual of the Commune Doctorum.........thank you for the citation.

After fifty years, I can still sing the first tenor part. A little gem indeed, comparable to Josquin. And a wonderful, courageously broad performance by Tenebrae. Thank you. Cheers from snowy Vienna, Scott

3 years later and I still put my now 3 year old to sleep every single night with this absolute gem. First minute she vocalises and the next she’s counting sheep.

Absolute perfection. Such beauty from what I think is the best choir I've ever heard. After many years of trying I finally managed to see Tenebrae perform live in Sion last weekend. It was a dream come true, and far exceeded every expectation I could have had. Swiss audiences are knowledgeable but very self-contained. They rarely get swept away, however good the performance, but at the end there wasn't a person still seated and I wasn't the only person using a handkerchief to dry my eyes. What an experience. Thank you so much, Tenebrae and Nigel Short.

I n❤❤❤❤❤ever stop listening to this powerful choir. The diminuendo 's and gradual crescendo's to climax simply tear me to pieces. The power of each part is so distinctively heard , yet voices are remarkably blended. I cry....

This is ..the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Having watched Miserere Mei, Deus with this group too, I also found out, that an angel, with a very high pitched voice, is roaming this earth. She is..the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. When you hear beauty like this, the creation of sound, interweaving, touching every part of your emotional being... it is NO wonder....religion, all the amazing stories with all their nuances and unfathomable doings, were created. This music, can make you feel, believe and worship. It is absolutely amazing. Mr. Short - you have created magic. - thank you, all of you.
