I've never used rubberised horsehair but it reminds me of furnace filter material that comes in large mesh sheets. The type I use appears to be made from natural wood and is kinda layered so you pull it apart rather than stretch it. I use it for branches on large 12"-18" trees rather than wiring every little branch. Got the idea from model railroad pine tree techniques. It's still a tad thick for large scales but it's probably more appropriate for smaller scales as an alternative method.

You could also try hanging basket liners as a super budget option....it pulls out to a similar consistency and meshes itself in pretty much the same way.....might take a little more working though as it comes as a thin sheet?

Very nice work Mel. There are different leaves on various parts of a tree? I never knew that. The things a person learns while attempting to re-create nature... Truly there is more to terraining than just gluing junk together. But then artists study the world around them to paint and sculpt it, dont they? I'm not completely sold on horse hair, its just too stringy for my taste. But I think if I spent time trimming it enough it might be ok for 25mm scale.

+Bill D. in Iowa Sun leave and shade leaves, different colours because they contain different types of chlorophyll which reflect different wavelengths of light. I never stop learning mate, right now I'm learning why leaves go brown and what changes barks colour. Plenty of people use it for 25/28mm, it was only a quick trim for the tutorial bud, so don't discount it!

For the other frugal people here, you can find bowls and pot liners for fake flowers made of this stuff which is cheaper than getting it for upholstery. I got a few ~30 cm diameter bowls of galvanized coconut hair from a dollar store.

Before flocking the shape reminded me of a tree from the Savannah. after flocking it reminded me of a jungle maybe something like jungle shrubs or vines.

Great info. One other substructure you may want to look into is actual root fibers (the real fine root netting often found in some plants). you can get glycerin treated roots and they work wonderfully. Probably best used on "that special" tree. I can direct you to a supplier if you would like the name and/or link.

I notice that your scrap paper was lifting up when you sprayed the glue; typical of the Daily Heil's poor coverage ;) That's one heck of a nice looking tree. I was surprised how spread out the substrate was. With some Clarke Bark, that'd look a real treat.

These really look great, what possibilities ! toxicity?? Hey Mel, couldn't find your earlier qu about toxicity online so I've put mine here. The nice & very well-stocked guy from Modeller's Warehouse in Australia advised me that rubberised horsehair is best handled with gloves as some toxicity. I'm open to being convinced otherwise. :)

+Vikki Wilson Well, if you have a latex allergy, I'd wear gloves but this is used of high end upholstery. There's no toxicity warning for it on any upholstery materials list I can find other than the fumes from burning, but then it's rubber. Tell you what, convince me otherwise ;-D

Great stuff Mel. FYI - most "rubberised horsehair" these days is made from coconut fibres, not horses. Guilt free terrain is good terrain.

Wasn't convinced to start with, it looked like the top of Donald Trump's head. With a good prune though it might work nicely, especially for trees like willows and such. What about clump foliage as a sub structure? Especially big chunks. You might have covered it before, not sure, but I don't think you listed it at the end.
