Born and raised in Lubbock, TX, Lubbock had Underwood's in the 60s and 70s, and my family ate there at least once a month. Loved their food as a young boy, and I can still remember how wonderful the place smelled as soon as I stepped into the restaurant.

I went on numerous high school band and debate trips to Brownwood back in the '70s and Underwoods was the place we ate on nearly every trip. There were always at least two or three other high schools there when we went. Great food and memories.

I lived in Amarillo when I was a young kid and we would eat there it was so good. Barbeque beef, potato salad and cobbler for dessert. They also had a treasure chest and after dinner you got to get a toy from it! Very good memories.

My eyes were bigger than my stomach when I filled up a tray at Underwoods 😅 I couldn't finish my meal but I really tried. It was so good! The staff were so great and the patrons were lovely, too. It was the first time in my life I'd tried cobbler! But I'm from Australia and never see it for sale here. Been meaning to bake some myself when I find the time.

I've eaten at Underwoods all my life. Even worked there two different times. Best eatin in town! My grandchildren love it. We ordered Underwoods for Christmas dinner. My daughters and their families came from Wisconsin and McKinney Tx. Said they wanted Underwoods for Christmas dinner. Loved every bit of it. Don't listen to all the idiots that are putting Underwoods down.

The Underwood's in Lubbock closed thirty years ago, and people still talk about it fondly. This might be worth a destination trip to Brownwood.

They also had an Underwood's in Waco years ago. Was top shelf chow. Yes, I hear people talk about the Waco lacation also till this very day. I used to drive by there every other day but never had time to stop. Sounds like a trip to Brownwood is in order.

Growing up in Amarillo, I ate at Underwoods thinking it was the only one. Now I know it was the one and only of its kind even with other locations. Sad to learn they closed in Amarillo. If you compare barbeque types you could certainly prefer others but Underwoods is incomparable, being one of a kind. Basically, it's number one in its field because its the only one in its field. Long live the independent restaurants in America and heip what's left because they're fading fast. That brings into question whether the new generation has the good taste and sensibility to keep it going. If not it will be their loss, not our's who came before.

We were so upset when they closed down. They had a hard time after the 79 tornado and closed not long after. It was the best place to feed a big family like ours. The barbeque steak and cherry cobbler were the best I ever had.

I grew up near Brownwood, but never developed a taste for the so called 'barbeque steak' from Underwood's, because it always reminded me of Sloppy Joes. However, the fried chicken, rolls and cobbler are great. I usually make several trips per month through the drive-thru, for my fried chicken fix.

And right you should, this kind of dining is pretty rare even in Texas, but the food is the best kind of homemade. Don't get it wrong, though, Underwood's atmosphere is super antique, and i doubt it could open in a brand new place looking like it looks in Brownwood.

Boy do I remember Underwood's ! I live in Ft. Worth area & when I was a kid, we'd go t Ark. to visit family. And on the way we'd stop in Sherman to eat at Underwood's. It was Great !! There was one in Haltom City for a while. I miss the BBQ & its on my bucket list to make it to Brownwood in the future !! Thanks for the tour !

@Lloyd Bonafide : When you traveled the way my Dad did in the 60s, threw Grapevine, Lewisville, Etc.. to Sherman. Hwy 75/69 into Oklahoma. All the way to 40. get to Mofet into Ft. Smith, pass Judge Roy Bean's hanging court. ETC...

When I was a little kid there was an Underwoods in Odessa my dad would take our family there every Friday it was so delicious... we just moved back to Texas and one of the first places we ate at in Brownwood was Underwoods.... it's still delicious...
