He was a brilliant preacher. He had a way with descriptive words that garnered the attention of the listeners.

I’m so amazed/impressed on how our preachers from back in the day didn’t need notepads or phones to preach from, they did it all from intense studying and great memory!!

He has a manuscript YOU just can’t see it! Nothing wrong with a manuscript preacher….even the best use them!

He never went to the pulpit without text, a prepared message. Only once or twice, in his later years, did I hear him preach without text.

So… because you use a “notepad or phone” you haven’t done “intense study?” I would definitely beg to differ, lack of memory has absolutely nothing to do with one’s ability to understand and deliver a sound message. This preachers memory is gift that God has given him, it is not something many can do, myself included. 🤷🏾♂️

In my lifetime (59 years old), this is when, in my purview, preaching was most serious. It wasn't about self or show. The homiletical act had substance and deliberately avoided any sense of show. Oh, how I miss the likes of Dr. Jones, Dr. Samuel Proctor, and Dr. Gardner Taylor.
