In 2001, President George Bush called a meeting with several prominent religious clergymen, from the African American community, to discuss his new venture with the implementation of faith-based initiatives. As we know, most Black churches did not support Bush during his first nor second presidential run. As a result, Bush's meeting with Black preachers raised quite a few questions about whether he was genuine in his approach or doing this as a way to persuade votes.
In this clip, Bishop G.E. Patterson, former presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ, Inc., Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, former president of Interdenominational Theological Center, Bishop Frank Reid, III, the 138th elected Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, along with other bishops & pastors discuss what came out of their meeting with President Bush.
Bishop Patterson made it clear to drive home the point that while we may not have been satisfied with the results of the 2000 election, we (African American Community) can't sit back and pout for 4-8 years and hope for another Democrat to take office to advance and move our community forward. We have to take action NOW! It's quite similar to the pushback many Black preachers have gotten for posting inauguration pictures supporting Donald Trump, using the verse(s) 1st Timothy 2:1-4 where it states we are to pray for those in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life..".
We all know how this ended with Bush & the Faith-based Initiatives Act. We must be wise and careful not to make this same mistake with the new administration, which is by far egregiously worse, in the name of "speaking to Caesar."
