the line that always gives me chills is when the teenager guy is holding a harpoon to them and they tell him they aren't afraid of him, and he replies with "no, but we're afraid of you." and he says that without sounding even a little afraid. it kinda goes with the queer allegory , and how "homophobia" is almost never caused by actual fear, its just hate given another name.

I think the thing to remember when asking “is luca a queer story” is that movies are made by a lot of people. Sure the director never thought of it like that, but a couple dozen other people made the storyboards and got to put their own thoughts into it. It’s never as simple as a yes or no with these things

As a trans man, I couldn’t help but read it as a queer story. The moment where Luca ‘rejects’ Alberto to save himself hit particularly hard, as that kind of attitude is really destructive within the trans community - there are a few prominent trans people who constantly paint the rest of us as ‘monsters’ (or ‘perverts’, or whichever attack the transphobes have chosen) in a bid to keep themselves safe, viewed as ‘one of the good ones’ by bigots who so clearly don’t want them to exist either. Really enjoyed the video - I have a lot of thoughts about this film haha. It made me cry because of queer allegory moments multiple times 😅

@randyd.81712 жыл бұрын
While I am 100% sure you are correct about this in the Trans community, and that is really tragic, and destructive behavior, it is every bit as common in the gay community. I have seen it hundreds of times in my life and been subject to it several times. I don't agree with that kind of behavior at all, but I understand it. It is a survival response out of fear of being discovered by many closeted people. I grew up in bad times to be a homosexual boy. As a result I stayed closeted for over five decades. I never once outed anyone to protect myself, or put down anyone for their sexuality, or for being trans. I found almost everything in this film to be a queer allegory. Growing us as a queer boy, I went through most of it. That is why I related to this movie so well. I can't watch it, or reactions to it without crying, at many parts.
@BigKicksMix2 жыл бұрын
@@randyd.8171 oh yes, absolutely. I was thinking of a few high profile examples in the trans community - but I think this is a feeling common to a lot of minority groups where the temptation to sell out the community for your own relative safety can be very strong when the threat is so large and constant

If you want an AMAZING deep dive into the queer themes in Luca, please watch James Summerton's video on the topic. He goes into a lot of the behind the scenes stuff, with how cishet creators often create queer stories entirely unintentionally, because the guy who made the story for this movie said that there were "zero gay narrative in this movie, they are kids." And the loaded issues with THAT sentiment.
@hannahpestell182 жыл бұрын
I do feel its important to say he supports a queer reading of the film and had intentions of making it so in early drafts. He has encouraged the idea of them having a romance after the events of the film. While i dont like Enricio saying that a "pre-puberty" movie means romance cant exist I do understand what was meant by it and how that idea has been created by culture. I think he has done well with accepting the queer community and their attachment to the film

As an Italian person I can tell you the town feels real because that is a real town, Porto Rosso (obviously referencing Porco Rosso) is modeled after the 5 Terre in Liguria, also that's why there's no spaghetti meatballs (a part from the fact that those don't really exist in italy) is because pesto is a traditional ligurian sauce, so that's what the pasta is with. Oh the photo of the guy on the vespa mirror is Marcello Mastroianni a famous italian actor. Also there's ton of easter eggs both from italian culture and pixar's world.

On the Bruno part, it seems to be partially an accident in Encanto as it was chosen specifically for the rhyme of the song
@lyraselena65172 жыл бұрын
my theory is they had to come up something to rhyme anyway so they used the name bruno as a little easter egg. especially since bruno was rejected and outlasted by his family and his visions were seen negatively “silencio bruno” ties to that aspect of him not being able to have a voice and being casted out.

@@lyraselena6517 from what I gather the original name was Oscar and Miranda was given 3 options for a name change, of which he chose Bruno for the rhyme

As a bisexual woman, I absolutely saw this as a queer story. I also didn't feel that Luca and Alberto had any kind of romantic connection; just a close friendship in which they helped each other find their inner strength to go after their respective goals without fear or shame. I personally related the fact that they appear human while on land but sea monsters when in the water as an allegory for bi people in straight passing relationships or just the idea of passing in general. I am married to a straight man so I have the privilege of appearing straight to the outside world. No one ever has to no that I'm a "sea monster" if I just stay on land. But I also can't hide what I truly am. Sooner or later, it's going to come out (ie. when it rains in the movie) so it's better for my mental health and being true to myself to run out into the rain and let people say what they will.

Luca damn near made me cry. I myself am queer and of course, because of my experiences, read this as a queer film. What really resonated with me from Luca was having that constant thought of "Will I be safe if I am my complete authentic self?" When I first watched the movie I thought the grandma saying "Not everyone will accept him, he just needs to find the people who will" was heartwarming because I thought of it as "no matter how many bad people there are there are always going to be some that will accept you," but now that you say what you did in the video I can see how that message is flawed. There does need to be acceptance and saying to just find the people that are on your side and ignore the ones who aren't feels off. Thank you for the video, great content as usual!

While I do personally interpret the film as the two of them having mutual, puppy-love crushes, I think the take of "their relationship is platonic, but the story itself is queer" is an entirely valid one. The characters themselves don't have to be queer for the story to have queer themes. The themes of self-discovery and exploring yourself are queer themes.

I'm glad to see someone else a bit unsure about how to feel in regards to the parents. so many aspects of this film was made really well, but I didn't find much comedy in their comic relief type scenes and the darker stuff that got sugar-coated made me feel off too. there were some other careless mistakes that bothered me about the film as well (although that's mostly me being nit-picky), but I still really like the film! I like how you described some things, like Alberto making up all these stories trying to make sense of the world in his own way, and Julia's situation being quite similar to Alberto's and Luca's. idk I just liked it a lot haha

I would absolutely love to see you react to Ciao Alberto, it's very short and sweet but also fucks you up if their relationship does that to you. Massimo is honestly the best thing about this movie, as someone who very much relates to Alberto and may or may not have quite the amount of feelings for Massimo as a result. One of my favourite moments is the scene on the boat about his arm. It's very apparent, especially on rewatch that he understood that Alberto was absolutely yearning for any kind of parental affection (and he likely knew that he had been living alone on the island, judging by how the fire is visible from the beach. And in that scene he has already noticed that Alberto is incredibly impressed by him, and he sees him looking at his arm and tries to make up a scary story about it to make it fun, but then he sees how Alberto reacts, immediately pulls back, changes gears completely to a soft and gentle mode, telling him the truth and trying to comfort him in a way, and then he adds an impressive and cool as fuck looking, but ultimately pointless knife trick to impress him some more. I just adore how clearly he can read a situation like this and how apparent it is especially upon rewatch how he is already working to help Alberto feel more welcome and home. I also really love that he offeres Alberto to stay as a help for his work, because otherwise he would probably have been overwhelmed, but that way he signals both that Alberto has a worth and skills that Massimo cherishes, and leaves him the room to not have to immediately confront the fact that he was just adopted by a new parent. Massimo's existance in this movie just makes me so incredibly happy.

Massimo's crown is the most appropriate editing choice I have ever seen, and yes, you MUST watch Ciao Alberto! You will ugly cry but it will be worth it. As for the movie itself and your breakdown: I had so many similar thoughts and emotions to you. The way I take this movie is an important and necessary friendship developing between two queer boys, and a good friend as well of course. I feel like this movie in its entirety sets them up to be a successful couple in the future, if they so choose to go that route. And believe me, NOTHING would make me happier than the potential sequel to Luca being Disney's first legitimate gay movie. It's Disney so I sincerely doubt that will happen, but one can hope at least. If anyone deserves a movie like that it's these two. The reason I see it that way is because the movie itself is a massive queer allegory, from my perspective as a gay guy. The YT channel "AreTheyGay?" Actually did an amazing analysis of this, as well as James Somerton. But the long story short of it all is that Luca had an entire theme of accepting yourself and being an "other" that could be shunned and discriminated against, and the fear and struggles therein. I think these two working through their own issues is a good reflection of this too. My favorite scene is the train scene, especially with Alberto's iconic quote: "You got me off the island Luca,... I'm okay." Let me tell you, the tears I cried the first time I watched this ... Wrecked. Destroyed. Eviscerated. I was a mess. This movie is just amazing and a true comfort movie for me at this point. And I agree with you on the importance of the Massimo and Alberto relationship as well. Anyway, thanks for your breakdown. You're amazing! Have a great day!

I think this hits on a reason why I didn't like this movie as much... I felt like there was so much more they could do with it and they just consistently don't. It was a good film! But there's subtext with intent and then there's this. This story probably meant a lot to some people, but I'm starting to get tired of having to read coded messages to get deeper meaning from a story. Some of your notes here might merit a second watch for me though! (I do think the point of this was to not have much deeper meaning. But in that case it just didn't have quite enough for me to enjoy it on the level I've enjoyed others). I think the reason I love it so much when ghibli movies do this, by comparison, is they don't really attempt to tell a story with themes so much as narrate simple life. Luca kind of straddles the middle ground.
@Jadzebra2 жыл бұрын
YooOoOOoo Edit: in my opinion their relationship is purely friendship but I'm not gonna shame anyone or be upset that they see romantic love there. I had a best friend like this, i was in love with in a platonic way when i was young, and i had to leave her behind too, for a long while.

The first time I see the movie I do reader as a queer story. I'm bi, and when I was in elementary school I had a crush on a classmate girl. I thought she was soooooo pretty, and smart and I really wanted to be her friend. In that moment never occurred to me be her "girlfriend" of anything like that, I was just a girl 🤷🏻♀️ but I do felt jealous of her friends for be more close to her than my self You can tell a queer story and make it platonic relationships, coming of age, discover your own feelings without any kind of physical attraction because yea, they are kids What I tink it's not fear is that a movie can easily have a romantic tone between a boy an a girl and be like pure and "awwww" filing but also people can dismiss the same narrative between 2 boys and say "you can't now you're gay at that age". If you can't be straight in elementary school and have a crush, you can be queer

I know it is not related, but I recommend reacting to the Lightning Thief Musical
