And the 3s? Sold?
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
The 3S was disassembled for parts (aluminum, motors and electronics, and fasteners). All of the 3D-printed parts and custom-length aluminum extrusions are still intact though, as are all of the gondolas, so it can be reassembled without much mechanical difficulty. Selling the 3S, or this MGD system for that matter, is not something we are anticipating because of the high level of maintenance that is required, which may be difficult for someone who was not involved in the design process to do successfully.

Wow, your creations are better every time ! I love that you used lego gears and tire to convey the cabins in the station. Is the grip also 3D printed ? Congratulations on this new amazing project !
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mat. Yes, the grip is 3D printed. Stainless steel pins retain the lever and wheels, while a spring recovered from a ballpoint pen and clipped to the proper free length provides the required grip force on the inner claw. The Lego gears and tires, although very convenient, unfortunately appear to be the design's weak point. The hubs in which the Lego axles spin wear out quite quickly, necessitating frequent cleaning and replacements. It seems they are not quite built to handle this load... Properly maintained, they work with good reliability though.
@matlegofan2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTimmy376 wow very impressive that such small part are able to be 3D printed ! Yes that’s the problem with lego parts, they can wear quickly. I hope you will find a solution to this, but it’s still a great work, again !
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
@@matlegofan Thanks! It's not a huge problem, really. But the solution to this will have to be in the form of a complete station redesign, where we won't use any Lego parts at all. Instead, we will use metal axles, gears, and ball bearings. And yes, very small parts can be 3D-printed, but it does require quite a bit of post-processing, such as removing support from very delicate features and drilling out holes which were printed radial to the print bed.

@TheTimmy376 Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, almost every part was designed by us, and 3D-printed. The remainder are aluminum extrusions for structural purposes, and were purchased with the required diameter and length, then machined by hand. From the first sketches to the realized system took approximately 9 months.

Sehr coole Bahn, aber vermutlich mit extrem hohem Verschleiß bei den ganzen Plastikteilen?
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
Danke!
@vonrollskyway12 жыл бұрын
From. One model ropeway builder to another, great job. Can your ropeway carry any weight? As for rope tension, what do you use?
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
Thanks, great to see you here again! The weight-carrying capacity of this system is much lower than last year, on account of the grip which is prone to sliding on the steel rope if any weight is added. It does this because we deliberately selected the lowest reasonable spring force in order to reduce wear on the grip mechanisms and the attach/detach rails on station entry and exit. The weight of a single car is 35 grams, the most payload we've had on a single car is a 60-gram cheap action camera. Tension on the rope was set to roughly 5 kg unloaded (no cars on the line), limited by the radial load rating (70 N) for the main drive stepper motor, which bears the full tension. Best seen at 1:49 in the video, the main drive is installed on an inclined, movable carriage, sliding on 8mm rods on linear bearings. The tension can thus be changed by an electric linear motor which has about 60 mm of travel. There is no pneumatic or counterweight tensioning, it's "set and forget".
@vonrollskyway12 жыл бұрын
@@TheTimmy376 very nice. I'm really supprized that with no free moving tension via counterweight or hydraulic, your ropeway doesn't bounce. Simply awesome job. Come and check out what we build sometime. Great job once again
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
You're right. I think the reason for the lack of any bouncing or pulsing is the fact that there is very low resistance in the entire system, because every sheave is on bearings, and the inertia of the rope itself, which is quite heavy. I'm familiar with your builds. They look very solid. Very impressive indeed!
@vonrollskyway12 жыл бұрын
@@TheTimmy376 bearings in each sheave. Very impressive. On ours we use a oil impregnated carbon fiber insert I machinened for each one. Very time consuming. I tried the bearings and over time they give out or seize up due to outdoor elements. What brand of bearings do you use for your sheaves
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
@@vonrollskyway1 Ah, the oil impregnated insert is very clever. I can imagine it's very time consuming to manufacture indeed. Does that setup need frequent lubrication? To be honest, we simply used relatively inexpensive Chinese unbranded bearings, although they are nickel-plated (or at least, they should be). But you make a good point, weather-resistance is a concern on these. We do not know how they would hold up if this system was installed year-round like your builds. It is a common size so we could upgrade to Misumi bearings if necessary without redesign. To give you some more detail on the design, it's not only the sheaves which are on bearings: the rockers carrying the sheaves are on two bearings each, and the rockers carrying those are themselves on two bearings each, as is the main rocker arm, for a total of 22 bearings in each sheave train.
@ggropeways20242 жыл бұрын
(Project code SB22) what do you mean? Also, how did you make the cabins for the gondola? Keep up the great work 😄😄😄
@TheTimmy3762 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The gondolas were 3D-printed using a translucent filament, 2 perimeters (0.8mm window thickness). The pillars are slightly thicker to make them appear more opaque, and are painted red, along with the floor, roof, and window frames. The detachable grip, hanger (connecting the cabin and the grip), and the ski racks are printed in opaque black, and are not painted. The hanger subassembly is screwed into mount points on the cabin, which permits a cabin to be swapped out if it becomes damaged (which has sadly happened on a few occasions). The "Eagle Express" markings on the lower front and rear windows are custom-printed adhesive stickers with transparency. The project code is basically the codename or working title of the project before it got the "Eagle Express" name. The previous year's 3S prototype was simply codenamed SB21, you get the pattern :)
