What a relief to discover that I can sharpen my garden tools myself! I am a 73 year old widow whose late husband always took care of my gardening tools. Hired help left the tools dirty and outside. I searched for a sharpening service but can not find one in the area . With this tutorial I now feel confident that I can keep my tools in good working condition. Thank you so much. Susan Kneller

Very helpful for first timers. However it was not clear which side of the file was used. The tips on using the vice & cleaning off rust was great but would like to know what type of oil to use after cleaning blade with vinegar. Overall a well recorded easy to understand speech, good details & almost perfect.

Thank you making this informative video. I wanted to learn how to sharpen my gardening tools without having to wait for my husband to get around to doing it. Lol So thanks to you I can do this task myself! 😊 Questions though, what strength of white vinegar do you use for cleaning? Just regular cooking vinegar? And you had mentioned using oil. What kind of oil do you use? Thank you

I sharpen mine when they get to dull to cut. I use my angle grinder to buzz their edges until the are sharp enough to get the job done. This is the same too that I use to sharpen my lawnmower blades. If you buy files, as I do, buy Nicholson files. They are the best and last the longest. I generally use smooth files more than bastard files. I have both. If I have a tool with a real damaged area I use my angle grinder to clean it up and get it re-profiled and then dress it up with a smooth file. If the edge is not that bad I just hit it with a file if it needs a sharp edge. Most hand tools do not need a sharp edge, like hoes and shovels, because they get dull, quick. Most of my yard hand tools get buzzed with my angle grinder.

Hi there, just seen your video..very impressed! I am a novice and need to get started with sharpening tools. What do you think of whetstones? I have done some research on their uses, seem similar to what you use. Is it basically a matter of opinion on what's best or just another choice of sharpening tool? I look forward to your response. Good wishes. From a women who enjoys gardening and caring for her tools.

Thank you for this video. When sharpening a shovel there seems to be two schools of thought: 1. Sharpen from the back side, 2. Sharpen from the front side, thus does it matter? Also, nice jacket, is it one of those oilskin type jackets from Outbacktrading Co.?

Thank you for the video. I have a file that was my dad's and I always wondered what it was for! Ha! Is there a way to determine whether it is a bastard, second or smooth? It's still in good condition (I think). Also, I can't seem to find the rust eraser you were using. Do you have the exact name or a link? I am finding regular woodworking sanding pads that are more of a sponge with sandpaper around it. I am also finding rust removing whetstones. But nothing that are like a soft eraser embedded with particles. Thanks!

Hey Matt: Terrific video. I've bookmarked it. Looking forward to getting started. One thing...in the other clips, a number of people suggested using vegetable oil in the beginning cleaning process and at the very end for maintenance. Didn't see it in yours. What do you think? Thanks again...Gerry, Madison, CT.
@Thetoolmerchants
@Thetoolmerchants 7 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful, Gerry. I see no reason to use any oil before sharpening, it will only gum up your file when you begin sharpening, and I don't think it would help with cleaning. A little oil at the end to prevent rust would be good, though. (especially at the end of the gardening season) Take care!

after the bastard file, you used a second file? what mill was that? thanks G
@Thetoolmerchants
@Thetoolmerchants 7 жыл бұрын
Geri, the main file I'm using is a second cut file. It's a bit smoother than a bastard file, but still removes metal fairly quickly. The blue handled file is a double cut file, which cuts very quickly and leaves a rough edge that you'd want to follow with a bastard or second cut file. You can get away with only using either a bastard or second cut file, I just prefer the second cut.
