All this hate for the Jungfraujoch is unfounded. For a first time traveler to Switzerland visiting the Jungfraujoch (if they can afford it) is a rich and rewarding experience (in spite of the maddening crowds). It has almost become a fashion these days to dismiss all well known attractions as tourist traps without providing any context as to for whom they should be designated as such. For first time travelers, Jungfraujoch is a place worth visiting not just for the summit but the views on the way and down the summit.

Something can be beautiful and rewarding but also time consuming, crowded and excessively expensive all at the same time. It's all a matter of priorities with the time you have. My guidebook described it exactly as it is.

Excellent list. Most of these places are in the Canton of Bern, which is interesting, and probably at least in part because they are easily accessible by train. I think the hidden gems are in Valais and Graubunden, but it's more "difficult" or time consuming to get there. Like many places in Europe, these villages or tourist spots are just too small to be able to manage huge tourist flows. The internet and social medias have obviously worsened that problem.

Nice video ; ) Still, I DON'T consider Jungfraujoch a tourist trap. It's expensive but you get some of the things that are unique in the world. The high mountains, the views, the valleys, the gorges, the glacier you can walk on, the ice palace and many more. The quality of the transport cannot be matched: a train tunnel that cuts through one of the most famous mountain faces (Eiger's north face) with two train stations built inside the mountain (Eigergletscher & Jungfraujoch) is a master of engineering, the train routes along the way up and down the mountains (Interlaken - Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen - Kleine Scheidegg), the efficient cable cars, the huge terminal - all facilitate the dispersion of people and a better experience for tourists.

Fully agree especially with the cable car Eiger express . Rather just looking at the crowd aspect as tourist trap . It’s once life’s experience, the engineering , Human Resources, visionary aspect (independently of think if it’s a good thing or not to have ) , all those aspects must be considered and it’s fascinating how and what human been able to achieve in this sense . So if you just ride for going to top without any thought behind - might be considered as tourist trap - but if you think deeper while using this material and rolling stock , it’s an amazing experience and that you don’t go everyday anyway. It’s still an exceptional place to visit and show to kids .

I agree with this. Yes, it cost me a lot of money but to walk on the ice and look down at the meeting of three glaciers at Konkordiaplatz was an experience I'll never forget, as well as the views from Eigerwand and Eismeer stations on the way. And I can understand why it's so expensive - the amount of maintenance needed at those altitudes must be enormous.

I agree. In fact, I made a comment about this before reading yours. I had just been to visit Jungfraujoch 3 days ago and although I am still seething in anger at some of the line cutting and general boorish behavior I saw, the experience was well worth it for me as a first time visitor.

I stayed in Interlaken for 3 nights. This town has a lot of access and public facilities. I really love staying there and will recommend to everyone. I got free pass from the hotel for the bus trips, so I visited Iseltwald. The lake is very beautiful but it's not worthy to spend 5CHF just to take a photo on the pier. You still have a lot of choices for the photo spot 😂 I also visited Lake Brienz from the other side (by taking trains), it's much more beautiful.

It's true that Interlaken as such is not Paris or Rome but then AFAICT nobody really goes there just to see the city. It's its _location_ which is the key: a gateway to so many nearby attractions. Even rustic villages do exist nearby, like Gsteigwiler, etc. Your warning about Instagram and "creative" framing and photo processing is very valuable!

The ice palace at Jungfraujoch was really cool and it was fun to go to the top and see all the snow, but I agree it’s really expensive and I went there and couldn’t see anything anyway because of the weather up there! Grindelwald First was absolutely amazing and I’d definitely go there over Jungfraujoch, but I don’t regret going to Jungfraujoch :) and agree Interlaken as a town is nothing compared to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald but it’s a great base!

Many years motorcycling through Switzerland (avatar pic in the Lauterbrunnen). I remember trying to find a back road into Grindelwald coming out of Meiringen. I turned a corner and the valley opened up with the Rosenlaui in the background. I was absolutely stunned. Got off the bike and took a pic - and have seen many more since taken from about the same spot. Lovely country to jut poke along back roads enjoying the scenery.

Yes, Jungfraujoch is probably over-rated, over-priced etc but then again, London (and most destinations) have awful expensive tourist traps too. If I ever get to Interlaken, I'll do it, mainly for the view & I've not seen a glacier up close...plus its got an observatory. To come all the way to Interlaken without doing Jungfraujoch is like going to London & missing out Buckingham Palace or Paris without going up the Eiffel Tower.

I agree ! A visit to Jungfraujoch is memorable and the view on the gletcher is amazing. If you get a chance to go and see it. Do it ! It's well worth the costs. The crowd spreads out throughout the complex and yes it is a busy place, but I didn't find it off putting.

It's definitely not over-rated - for me it was one the greatest experiences of my life, and I've been up a lot of mountains in Switzerland! I also think the price is justified (although undoubtedly very high) as a railway line that climbs up inside some of the highest mountains in Europe takes an awful lot of maintenance and is barely comparable to anything else. You also have the bonus of being able to look out from a window in the North Face of the Eiger on the way up, which is quite unforgettable. Just make sure that you have good weather before committing yourself to the expense!

The main problem with Jungfraujoch, apart from the cost and the crowds, is that it is very weather dependent. On a clear sunny day it gives stunning views but if you go on an overcast cloudy day, you might see nothing but grey clouds. And its not simply a case of planning ahead, the weather can change very quickly

I must say this is spot on about Jungfraujoch and Interlaken. All the locals we spoke with told us to avoid the "Top of Europe" and we're glad that we did because we spoke with others who went and said it was overcrowded and wasn't worth the price of admission. Gornegrat rail in Zermatt and Aiguille du Midi were spectacular. We stayed in Interlaken for a night because it's on every single Switzerland list we saw and it is absolutely not a destination to see anything. Harder Kulm was overcrowded and we had to wait an hour to go up for an average Swiss view, probably my least favorite Switzerland experience and we saw way better views all over Switzerland. The lakes are beautiful but Interlaken is not what we expected after hearing so much about it. Grindelwald was spectacular and we wished we stayed there instead and ended up spending much more time in the region in Grindelwald. These are very good tips thank you guys

You are being very diplomatic in regards to Interlaken. My experience there: it felt like you were in Japan with all the Japanese tourists….all the business signage also including Japanese. It was certainly different to every other place i visited in Switzerland. Apparently the Japanese love this area and why not. It is sensational. Just doesn’t feel like Switzerland. Whilst expensive i do think the trip up to Jungfraujoch is worth the cost. Same as the train trip to Gornergrat at Zermatt. There are some things that seem expensive but they provide incredible memories. If you do go to Junfraujoch to see the top of the Aletsch glacier it is also worth catching the cablecar from Fiesch up to Eggishorn to see the bottom end of the Aletsch glacier. Spectacular. Switzerland is a magnificent country with jaw dropping scenery. Enjoy.

The Gelmerbahn really isn't a tourist trap. It's shown wrong on Instagram, but that doesn't make it a tourist trap. It's a beautiful funicular, away from any villages going up to a beautiful lake with about hourly bus connections taking you to the next rain station in 20 minutes. So you can actually get there quite good by public transport.

We just returned from Switzerland and we were lucky in that I have a cousin in Geneva who planned our itinerary, drove us everywhere and we didn’t go to any of those places. We stayed in Lausanne for a few days (lovely city) with some side trips to L’Isle and Mont-la-ville to visit some other cousins. We spent a short time in Montreux and did Chillon Castle. From there we spent a couple of nights in Saanen and visited Gsteig, Gstaad and Lauenen where some of my other ancestors hailed from. We saw Gruyere and spent a few days at Lausanne where we visited Burgenstock and took the cogwheel train up Pilatus. There were numerous other small locations and none of them felt like tourist traps.

I agree with the Jungraujoch been overhyped. Schilthorn nearby is a better choice, with great views frome the mountains in front, and its revolving restaurant where a James Bond movie was filmed. Also you can stop or stay in Murren, half way up. It´s a charming town with a great view down the valley. Plus visiting Lauterbrunnen down below, and enjoying the waterfalls. Another good option with great views and also a glacier tunnel is Titlis, up from Engelberg.

I went to Interlaken in September one time on a Sun newspaper voucher. We experienced zero crowding at Jungfraujoch, and we the next day took an empty train up the Haider Klum and walked down. Food was average priced in Interlaken, but mars bars were ridiculously priced. I know it's fairly crap chocolate but we just wanted easy access sugary snack for our hikes. The only other expense was petrol as I drove(old Land Rover 200 )but it was split 4 ways

Switzerland is expensive, allow for 50% more than UK. Look at half price rail pass and Berner Oberland pass for free travel on boats, trains, cable cars and post buses. You get half price travel from Murren to Schilthorn and Eiger Gletcher to Junfraujoch but take an early trip when it us sunny. We spent 460sf on passes and saved at least 400sf over 10 full days. Kind of surprised Lauterbrunnen didnt make the list. Excessively crowded. They had food trucks selling mini donuts and corndogs. They had this ridiculous path to the waterfall where someone takes your photo but you cant even see the waterfall. Everyone gets that one photo of the waterfall behind the pretty buildings. It's a totally different experience from being in Murren, Gimmelwald or Wengen. It is a via-point to bigger and better things. It is not a destination.

The Jungfraujoch has become the Disneyland of the Alps. The Eiger Express was the dream of the Jungfraubahnen. They needed a solution to make the Joch a 4 hour visit to attract more groups and they did it. I have nothing against tourism, but this is too much. The best advice I can give is to take the first ride up in the morning and get to the terrace asap to look at the surroundings. Then go down, get out and take the leisurely walk to Mönchsjochhütte. With a bit of luck, you’ll experience a bit of the magic of the mountain.

1 - I haven't been to Jungfraujoch, mostly because the prices are indeed absurd as you've said. It's frankly ridiculous, and the amount of tourists you see even on instagrams kinda put you off. I agree with the Zermatt option, though that's obviously more out of the way and less convenient. 2 - Gelmerbahn - I'd also looked at this - from Interlaken, if you use it as a home base as you suggested, it's about 2 hours by bus and they don't run very often. If you miss the bus, the next one is likely 2 hours later! And you already covered the speeded up videos. 3 - My fiancée is from south east asia so she definitely wanted to go there herself. Went there in summer 2022, and we were in a line. We avoided the entrance fee, thankfully! It's the combination of the pier and the view all from the show that make it so attractive, and the convenient location close to Interlaken. A different place from the show would be Sigriswil bridge. 4 - Visited Interlaken twice now and will do a third next winter. It's the absolute best 'home base' to go to Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen areas and elsewhere. Rothorn train, Thun, Brienz, so many other options. It's a good place for organizing paragliding as well, and as you mentioned before, Funky Chocolate Club is a great little workshop! 5 - Haven't been to Aare gorge. Did go to Grindelwald's though, quite lovely. Also the one in Leukerbad is amazing. You climb up so high! 6 - Blausee - haven't been. I'd found Oeschinensee first and only later realized Blausee is practically next door. Oeschinensee as you said in other videos takes a bit longer to get to, but it's stunningly gorgeous. I proposed there to my fiancée. All in all I agree with all of these! I'd almost want to add Grindelwald First to this list, as it can get extremely busy at times - the scenic platform at the restaurant most of all.

I am a Swiss living since a long time abroad..... I'm getting old and I think it's time to share some little secrets: First : I like how you discover and describe CH , but , until now , I saw you only visit the well known . Luckily you already found out how boring Interlaken is 😌 One of the most beautiful places in CH where you will not find Tourists,😏, is the river Doubs. Coming from France it is a long way the border between CH and F , then enters CH , turns 180degrees and goes out again. After the turn is the Town of Saint Urasnne. Soo beautiful.... And thereafter, if you are good in finding ways you can discover the Doubs at his best. Only locals and savants are there ,to enjoy one of the most beautiful places to swim with the fish...... Next we have the only cable car in the Jura Mountains in Reigoldswil , going to Wasserfallen. A paradise for hikers.... Did you go to Rheinfelden ? A City in two Nations , with a german part and a Swiss Town.... Rheinfall and Shaffhausen ? A must away from all the Chinese and other 2 day CH visitors..... Try Langnau snd the Emmental ! Sooo beautiful , with so many side valleys and of course the real Emmental cheese. Back to the north west do not miss the canton of Jura , the youngest canton of switzerland , born out of a bloody fight with Bern not so long ago...... You like watches ? Affordable and first class swiss timepieces come since more than 100years from Höllstein in Baselland , where you can buy direct at the factory. Then La Brevine. The swiss Siberia, the coldest place in CH , beautiful in its valley in the Jura Mountains. And ,of course, I miss Ticino in your descriptions as well as Graubünden ! Both to big and with too many places to see for this time. If you are interestet in more Infos about hidden treasures in CH (Ticino/Graubünden/Wallis and more)you are welcome to contact me.....

Did the Pilatus tabogen ride and had a great time, even though I wiped out and scraped the side of my arm. The trams to the tops of mountains in general are over hyped. Yout get to the top and look ovee the side and then you're kind of done in a few minutes. Far better to take one of the trams to a place to hike and enjoy being high up in the mountains.

It is very courageous of you to put the Jungfraujoch on the "not do do" list. You will get a lot of heat over this decision. However - you are absolutely right. If you want to visit a shopping mall that is packed with vendors who sell "made in Switzerland" items at ridiculous Jongfraujoch prices - feel sick of the altitude - especially for overseas tourists who struggle with jet lag or are prepared to break a leg on an ice patch - the Jungfraujoch is the place for you.

Great tips; you picked places that are all pretty as such, but became victims of their "Instagramability". You could add the Aescher in Appenzell, which 40 years ago was a neat, authentic alpine inn, but nowadays is unfortunately to avoid, since it's so grotesquely overrun with tourists. Ather "honorable mentions" among Swiss tourist traps for me are Davos and St.Moritz: They are both situated in great locations, but they are not charming alpine resorts and overrun with traffic and day tourist. If you're looking for more charming ones, head to Wengen, Mürren, Guarda, Grimenz or Zermatt, they're (almost) car free and have more old, authentic regional architecture.

Everyone saying it is overcrowded, but you are part of the crowd... not only too much people for the tourists looking for calm spots, also for locals sometimes the amount of cars, campers, trash and sound is above the desired level.

Thanks for the valuable tips as i'm planning to go to Switzerland again soon. Agree that some of the places you mentioned are probably overrated, but they still look beautiful, with or without the video effects. Will avoid the places you said are expensive. I cant imagine the prices as Swiss is already an expensive country

I’m going to Switzerland in late September. I’m staying two nights in Wegis (near Lucern) and two nights in Spiez. I’m thinking of doing Pilatus and Titilus in Lucerne. If I had to pick between the two, what would you recommend? I’m an amateur videographer so I want to maximize my time and get some great shots.

I think for Blausee, the best is to stay overnight at the hotel. Then you get to enjoy it without the crowds.

You gave me reason to think about whether to pay the ransom to go all the way up to the Jungfraujoch or just enjoy it from a less expensive location further down the valley, but I definitely want to get at least as far as Lauterbrunnen. I'll have to see what it comes out to with one of the several Swiss rail passes as we intend to spend a few days in Switzerland and take other scenic trips. Btw Blois is a city in France. You got it right in the video but the chapter label is wrong.

Interlaken was the perfect base but not the greatest day trip. Agree on that. Jung Frau Joch was amazing though. Touristy yes, but an unreal experience just like the other obvious places in the area.

Wow, I totally disagree with your assessment of jungfraujoch and interlaken. Yes Jungfraujoch is expensive but it is very modern and absolutely stunning. We enjoyed every minute from the eiger express and train up to the top. Well worth it. Also we stayed in interlaken because of it's central location to other areas of switzerland and because of the excursions that we wanted to go on. Incredibly beautiful town. I would love to come here again. We traveled at the beginning of June and it was not that crowded.

All I can recommend is make sure your hotel has air conditioning. We didn’t realize ours didn’t. We stayed at weisses kreuv. Great location, old hotel with a pizzeria on the first floor. Absolutely great place to stay although we arrived around June 10th and they said we beat the rush of tourists. We would definitely stay there again.

Hi, Thanks for your e. We planned to go to Jungfraujoch, Iseltwald and Interlaken in October. We are going to these places after Lucerne before Zurich. Any places you suggest we replace for those 3 “to avoid places” that we can go before. Zurich but after Lucerne? Thank you.

Another points: 1) Engelberg - Titlis. Dont travel up to Titlis if you dont like masses of tourists from India / Pakistan. It´s overfilled too, because some time ago Bollywood seems to has filmed there. Not misunderstand me: I have nothing against Indian peoples - but after my experiences two times there: they have no Decancy - or a different. They are loud, they are pushing, they leave garbage. Additional you didnt get a cheap ticket-pass like in other regions. The only one is a "Tell-pass" for the whole regional area around Lucerne for a selected time period. So its only worth if you do long day travels by train, and with the Tell Pass you must go every day to the ticket counter of the Titlis-Bahn to show the Tell-pass and get the ticket for the cable car for ride. (Over some month it could be possible you can only use 1 time the Titlis-Bahn with the Tell-Pass instead every day) 2) Arosa area: Nice there, but. ... a lot of bikers. I mean: A LOT!!! There exists a special prepared trail only for bikers - but nevertheless too many uses the trails where hikers go along. And it´s absolutely annoying (and I would assume not good for the nature too). 3) Mürren (near Interlaken): It´s THE Destination to go up to the Schilthorn, aka Piz Gloria - the location where they filmes James Bond once. But For the next few years there´s a problem: Large construction sites! They build/rebuilding the cable car, including rebuilding a new station. So I think It will destroy the silence of the area (Mürren is car-free! Normally), it will destroy the view, .... So If you want to there - wait some years. And then try the new steepest cable car of the world.

I don’t really agree with the recommendations you mentioned..If people wants to go there so be iit. Like Iseltwald, the place is beautiful. Yes, the influx of tourist esp for Asian is enormous but it’s worth visiting..Interlaken and the rest..Although, its good you mentioned alternative transpo example take the boat. I took a bus going to Iseltwald ans the view was superb…I mean better suggest alternative routes or transpo compared to avoiding it…These places are one of those “must visit in Switzerland.”

Another tourist trap I recently experienced was about Swiss railway (SBB) who tend to indiscriminately fine passengers who activated the Swiss pass just a little bit late with excessive fine. I was handed a 158 CHF fine ticket by the ticket controller without even asking me any question (e.g. if it was my first time). According to SSB website such a high fine should be for repeated offenders. Later, I found out the abusive habit of SBB ticket controllers from many internet groups and decided to make an in-person trip to the SBB office to complain (as the SBB tel line is always engaged). The funny thing was the staff in SBB office after hearing my case immediately and apologetically reduced my fine to 30 CHF. Instead of having time to sight-seeing, I spend a lot of my time in Switzerland complaining to SBB. This not only wasted a lot of my time but leave a really bad taste in my mouth. So watch out for this abusive action from SBB. Take care.

I've recently been to both countries.. and if you are from Norway I think you will find the prices in Switzerland very reasonable and on par with Norway, sometimes maybe less.. 😅 Norway is more a truly rugged and breathtaking country.. and so are the prices there😂

It’s refreshing to get some “real world” assessment of some of these attractions. Most videos, etc seem to simply hype up these places. We get that a lot where I live as well. BUT, it does all depend on what you’re used to. What a local might see as “not worth it” may make a very nice memory for a visitor. I like that you guys seemed to highlight this as well.
