A thought about the Devil card: (this is just how I see it of course). You know how people say that the best weapon the devil has is that people do not believe it existed? Or that people underestimate it? Or something along that line. How many times have we shackled ourselves to things which initially thought as harmless. It is just a drink. It is just a smoke. It is just one deck (haha). And so on and so forth. That disarming cute little goat is a perfect devil, because it looks so harmless. But you stay there too long, it will burn you down (the fire around its hooves). And usually, you do not know that you are burning until you are burning. And for the devil to get you there, without you knowing, as it usually operates, it will have to constantly be underestimated. That is how I see it :)

I read the devil card as the scapegoat. We stick an inverted pentacle to this poor animal's forehead and send it out there into the burning desert, firmly believing that this will free us of all that shit that keeps us chained and fettered. That's mistreating the innocent goat as well as our own souls and the best way to stay bound to the world of illusions forever.

I won my copy in an Instagram post this past December. Deck #12 for me. Regarding the devil: goats can be quite pushy, mischievous even, get in to trouble. Plus they eat everything thing in sight with little or no discretion. Sounds a lot like the over indulgence of a devil 🤔😉🐏

i went on a road trip last week with some really good friends and I got my tarot read by my friend Taylor. She did a simple past present future reading after cleansing her cards and letting me shuffle until i felt comfortable. I started crying half way through my past card, and by the time she was reading my present I knew that it wasnt a fluke how accurate the reading was. I wouldnt say I was a skeptic, but just that I really wasnt expecting for it to be that accurate. Now i have to say that I definitely believe in the power of the tarot, and this is going to be my first deck! I ordered it a few days ago along with a fluorite rainbow quartz wand for cleansing it.

I just rewatched you review and I have some thoughts on the Hanged man card in regard of what you said, that he is actually not upside down compared to his natural state. To me he is the one who is capable of seeing things from another perspective, as opposed to other creatures, who spend all their lives 'right' side up, not once looking at things from underneath, and if you think about it, the bat does not fly upside down, so it is only in this position, when stationary, stopping, contemplating, that is 'reversed'. In movement it is just as everyone else, looking and seeing things from the same perspective as we do. So for me a bat is actually very fitting as the Hanged man :)

So true! It's like he has a balanced perspective because he flies upright as well as hangs upside down. So he sees both sides/perspective. Interesting thing about bats, they actually can't take flight from the ground because they're too heavy (being featherless). So they hang upside down and "fall" in order to take flight. They wouldn't be able to fly unless they hang upside down!

@@kuu6667 bat's being blind is actually a misconception, they have perfectly good eyesight it's just that they do most of their hunting during night so they don't really get to use it as often as you would think and this has lead people to thinking that they are blind.

I know this is 8 years on, but my oh my, it was so beautiful to hear your thoughts on this amazing deck. I remember feeling so much depth in the 6 of swords card with that deluge of rain falling down. Everyone cries, including the malefactors, despite their abuse of power. Rain is so neutral and I love that as an image of oneness and healing. And the other card I immediately zinged with was the Hanged Man. Bats are renowned for their extrasensory hearing. Their eyesight isn't great, so they track everything with echo location, like dolphins, so even though they are upside down in repose, they are inextricably linked to everything in the dark by their hearing. It's a beautiful commentary on the interdimensional aspect to the card and hearing from within. Thanks for the beautiful video.

I definitely agree about the Hermit card. I always look at that card in a deck since it's my birth card, and this one is one of the greater depictions of the Hermit. I also love the Magician and Empress cards because they seem to regal to me. The Strength card is my 'self-proclaimed' card so that's another card that I always check out before I buy a deck.

No, you are not crazy. I thought the same thing of the Devil and The Hanged Man cards. It's helps me know I'm on the right track knowing that I was thinking the same thing before you mentioned it. I just ordered my own deck. I'm so excited! Since I'm new to Tarot, I have only been using my great-grandmother's Rider-Waite deck. As grateful and honored as I am to use them, I'm SO tired of looking at those cards, lol! Thank you for going over each and every one of the cards in just the perfect way. Excellent walkthrough, you so did it justice - I loved it! I made notes as I watched. Ok, here we go, maybe they'll resonate :) Thoughts? For The Hanged Man - I always find myself thinking ‘BE like the hanged man’ when it appears - be like the bat, this creature, while upside down is not uncomfortable so while a sacrifice may be coming up, the message is, be still, keep your eyes open, don’t resist taking in this perspective. For the Devil - I go with - the notion of the Devil being the scapeGOAT, what we blame our darkest issues (represented with the reversed pentagram) on - and that helps me process this artistic depiction in a more traditional sense. For the Ten of Swords - This card completely hits my feelings I have of bull fighting. How the power of man will ultimately crush the bull and while there is a challenge, there will be ruin. I see the bull as a victim - literally stabbed in the back. When this card appears I start dealing with feelings of hopelessness, pity, but this leads me to new beginnings as transformation will lead to a better place. I use the visual of the 10 swords though to address anything excessive, or melodramatic…it would have only taken 1 sword to take down the bull…why 10? The suffering is real - but perhaps there is an element of exaggeration too? For the Four of Cups - I connect to the idea of rat as being sneaky - ready to grab more. It’s collected those 4 cups and is not satisfied, ready to scurry out and greedily take more. I also think, rats grab things we leave around - things that are neglected. Is there something internally being nibbled on by the rat that we are ignoring?

+In The 78 Cards LOVE the idea of the scapegoat for the devil lol, putting off the responsibility of our actions on others when we have the control to get up and leave when we chose. The 10 of Swords I have no issue reading with, I think it is amazing including what you have said, love the excessive aspect you put on it, the melodrama and the wording in the book, not so much :) I think also the mouse can be eating away at our satisfaction for where we have gotten at the moment, we have found a measure of stability in the 4 of Cups but the mouse eats away at that leaving dissatisfaction in its wake. Loved all these ideas, thank you!

Gorgeous deck, good for beginners because in order to understand the deck you'll have to do your own research into each card because the book is short on information; and you end up learning so much in the process. But you will probably outgrow it eventually. :) This is the best information I've seen on YT about this, thank you.

Here is just a perspective I would love to share about the devil card: I really like the fire part in the devil card. It signifies something which can burn you but also passion and drive. It represents addictions which can kill you in excess. The smirk on the rams face suggests it is completely aware of the fire and is enjoying the heat and is comfortable in it. Also, because the fire is currently only at its feet , it can be extinguished if one tries to, meaning it hasn't completely taken over your body and soul. The Devil card is one of the most realistic and expressive cards in the deck. It is also completely dark representing raw emotions without much head-space involvement.

Regarding the keyword "melodrama" for the 10 of Swords: I actually have read that in two or three different tarot books and I do see where it comes from. It can relate to a situation where it would be better to realize that sth. has ended and it is better to let it go and close the door mentally instead of clinging to it and creating a lot of artificial fuss about it for whatever (selfish) reason. Just stop the drama and move on! It would be difficult, of course, to say this to a client... This deck is the one I work with in September, I like it a lot, and it delivers very clear and meaningful readings. Great review, Kelly!

I have this tarot and i love it! What i see with the devil card is so clear, lets forget the cliché of the relationship with the ram being the devil by itself, but there are some cultures where there is the feeling that the devil can posses rams, snakes... see.. there is the mark of the devil at its forehead, irs possesed, paralized with negativity, curse, pain, addiction, llok at its eyes , the hoves are in pain ... at this moment it cant get out... or actually it can run

Thank you for the walkthrough, I was initially hesitant because folks were reviewing it as very negative. It seems that some images are disturbing, but for me I think the worst is the buffalo. Reason being is settlers intentionally slaughtered the Buffalo to wipe out Native Americans' food source as part of the genocide and land theft. That makes it very unsettling to me. The other "negative" cards really aren't that bad. Will purchase.

When I was 16 I purchased some cards and I ended up stop doing them after a month or too. About 4 yrs ago my mom gave me a box of used items with tarot cards in them. I just tossed everything. Ten of pentacles have nine pentacles on it. This is correct because we can't see number 10 with our eyes, we can only see 1 and 0 that make 10. 10 is the number of the completed cycle, rounded whole, vesica pisces, sacred and untouchable. There are 9 trees in the forrest, but forrest itself is 10. We can make vesica pisces out of 9 pentacles: o oo ooo oo o

I have to say that the first time I saw the ten of swords from the medieval Scapini deck in a magazine over a decade ago my first thought was Melodrama, and in that particular print of the card they do seem melodramatic in the sense that they seem to be paid to cry at that particular scene instead of doing it earnestly. Although now that I have the actual deck I don't get the same feeling from the actual card but that magazine print still does

I know people who have had this as their first deck and learned very well, I use it a lot in readings :) The Rider Waite is good because many books refer to it, but I always recommend following your heart on a deck because if you love it, you'll want to use it! I really enjoyed your walkthrough of the Wild Unknown! I love this deck, though it's not been as easy to connect with as I had hoped. I think I need to focus on it for a while! +Carol H I'm glad you enjoyed it, I had the same trouble at first but this time around it's like meeting an old friend, so I think it was just timing and some emotional hits it was pushing at that I wasn't ready for then. I'm curious about the 2nd edition though I always have mixed feelings on changing deck images or secondary texts in books lol, especially if they are good (aka, I didn't like the second version of Frankenstein as I felt social pressure played a role in that), I have a little of "don't fixed what isn't broken" mentality but I'll be curious to see what she felt needed changing. I'm sure I'll end up eating my words :D

+The Truth in Story I was incorrect about the Devil card being replaced. According to Aeclectic Tarot the card backs will be different, as well as the following cards: Temperance; Hierophant; Lovers; Nine of Wands (these 4 cards have more colours added to them); Seven of cups; Four of swords (these last two cards have been changed a bit more). I'm quite happy with my original, and will be reacquainting myself with it :D

Thoughts about the word "melodrama" used in relation to 10 of swords: Do you think it is because sometimes this card not only reflects a true state of affair out there, but also in our head? That is, only in our minds? So it has nothing to do with reality? As for the 4 of cups: do you think the mouse has something to do with taking away from oneself?

+Nobody Here I do like the idea that it reflects that we have blown things up in our heads but, in my understanding, that is more the realm of the 9 of Swords with the 10 of Swords more based in reality. I definitely would rather see a person impaled with 10 swords than a bull. What this brings up for me is anger at the fact that bull fighting still exists and the ways in which they compel the bull to fight in the first place. There was a story that my Mom read to me as a child and it was called "Ferdinand." It a was about a sweet bull that wanted nothing more than sit in among the flowers of the field and love all those around him, but of course, he wasn't allowed to do that since he was raised for the fights. In the end no matter what they did to him he would not fight. Anyway this card pisses me off..... sorry to ramble, but the cards do stir up things in us.

It is not dark energy if the same cards were done in colour it would not get that vibe by some but because it is basic black white and simple drawings it. Is noted by some with dark vibes It is a lovely set of art work that is not busy to the eye it is intuitive in its pictures JMO 🙂

This deck is very important to me, cause it's indirectly responsible for me starting to learn tarot again. But there was a time, when it was everywhere, and I got super-fed up with it, and I still haven't recovered. I wonder how different will be the new edition. If The World from the box is really the card, then it'll be a lot more colourful. Maybe one day I'll buy it to have it as a symbol of my path, but 40$ +probably horrendous P&P it's more then a bit too much. :/

+BartolomeJacinto I often feel bad when things are hyped up so much that it actually has the reverse effect on a deck because some times, and I think in this case, there is more substance than just hype. I'll be curious as well about the difference in the new edition but also like the idea of having the first edition because it is the subtle use of color that I actually love about the deck so 6 full color cards in a deck like this might be disjointed but we'll have to see! I would love to hear about how this helped you back to learning tarot!

+Erika Baker I think the key is to get a deck that resonates and you feel strongly about. I know that Patrick from In the 78 Cards here on KZbin started out with the Wild Unknown so it is certainly possible to start here! That being said, I do think that having a deck with visual stories on the minor arcana cards can be very helpful when you're first learning and this deck does have "pip" like cards where there may just be 10 pentacles but not a "story," so to speak, to help trigger meanings. So you might want to consider getting either a Rider Waite Smith deck for studying in conjunction with this or another deck that at least has Rider Waite imagery, there are many many out there! But that's just a suggestion! :) Good luck on your journey, I have a number of tutorial videos and there are many out here on KZbin to help you down the path!

thanks for a great review! although I must say that I'm still not convinced with this deck. I am such a colorist and the lack of color just doesn't do it for me. I think that's what it is... I do like the artwork, but not all the card... The hangdman is pretty cool, although in the animal wisdom Tarot deck the bat is also used as the hangedman. I think the wheel of fortune and the three of swords are my favorite. A question for you Kelly, I've always wondered, are you a Gemini? If not you must have a lot of air in your natal chart. If you add up your birthday: 1-2-3456=21= The World, if it goes over: 1-2-3457=22, you reduce as always with numerology and 2+2=4 so the Emperor. If you google "tarot birth card" there are calculators that will do it for you :)

Hello Ana! The Shadowscapes review is one of my older reviews. When I first got the Wild Unknown I sold it almost immediately but a year or so later it was sent to me and it was the right time for it and I have loved using it ever since. It is certainly in my top group of decks to use. Sometimes its all about timing I suppose! :)

The Wild Unknown is really a gorgeous deck, I only have issues with the broken cups in the 8 of Cups, and of course the 10 of Swords is difficult as I don’t see the 10 of Swords as the death of anything, I reconcile RWS imagery to the death of a way of thinking that needs to be let go of so you can move forward :)
