Thanks for trying our Kinsale Atlantic Dry Mead folks, it's a traditional honey only mead fermented off-dry and made with orange blossom honey, matured for two years so it's crisp and floral with citrus orange notes and not sweet, and also gluten free. You can drink it on its own in a glass, a mether or a drinking horn... or in a spritz as you suggest and great with all kinds of seafood. We've been making this for 7 years now in Kinsale which for all you folks not from Cork, is in West Cork !

The "clinking" of glasses originated in the medieval days when wine was often spiked with poison as the sediment concealed it quite well. If a host wanted to prove that the wine wasn't poisoned, he would pour part of the guest's wine into his glass and drink it first. If the guest trusted his host he would just clink glasses when the host offered his glass for a sample. Hence the clinking of glasses has become a sign of trust, honesty and toast to good health.

The Mesoamerican chocolate and red wine drink was fermented from dark (unsweetened) chocolate and the red grapes was added to diminish the 'bitterness' of the dark chocolate. It could b served hot or room temperature.
@NaganoplАй бұрын
As far I know grape wasn't known in Mesoamerica so do wine until Europeans arrives. It has to be something different or it's just a legend.
@silverlobo2135Ай бұрын
@@Naganopl You are right. I forgot to add quotes around the word "grape". It was actually closer to a berry, but with the arrival of the Spaniards and conquest, it got called "grape" as it was the closest word to the traditional berry. so it got replaced by the grape. It is also possible that it was changed by Spanish slave owners as berries or vanilla may not have been sweet enough to balance out the bitterness of dark chocolate. It is also possible that it got change to hide teh more 'sacred' version of the original indigenous people's culture.

Fun fact for those who may not be aware, the tradition of a "honeymoon" after a wedding is thanks to mead. :) Long and short of it, the bride's father was expected to provide the happy couple with mead (fermented from honey) for roughly a month after the ceremony... which, back then, was often referred to as a "moon." (aka, the amount of time from one full moon to the next) Run them together and there you have it... the "honey moon." One of the many obscure facts my wife and I detailed in our wedding gift; a 28-page hand-bound leather book of both our story and the origins of many wedding traditions we still use to this day. Slainte...!

While there is a Mesoamerican Alcohol made from Cacao seeds, there is actually a recent discovery of an older one using the pulp of the fruit. The drink made with the seeds had additives usually, whereas the one made with pulp did not. I guess a possible example of the not so ancient one would be Dogfish Head Brewery's Theobroma. It contains additives such as chiles and uses cacao nibs and fermented chocolate. If Niall tried commercial eggnog like say Bordens it's not comparable to the actual eggnog. Watch out because now many companies use carrageenan to thicken it so they can make a more liquid version on the cheap. Don't let them put Irish Moss in your nog.
