People get so confused by Mezcal vs Tequila when it's pretty simple. Tequila is a specific type of Mezcal (must be made from Blue Agave and be from specific regions in Mexico). All Tequila is Mezcal, but not all Mezcal is Tequila. Just like Whiskey, there's a wide range of Mezcals.

Tequila is a village in Mexico, and has to come from that general area of Mexico. Kinda like how Scotch is a whiskey from Scotland. Tequila is a Mezcal from Tequila.

That and the blue weber agave is steamed to make tequila. The agave to make mezcal is roasted in pits in the ground or stone ovens (hence the smoke). But not all mezcals are smokey, the flavor profiles can vary from one type of agave to the next, even the land and type of distillation (clay or copper pots). Not to geek out too much but I love mezcal!

I like a nice reposado mezcal with soda water, a wedge of lime, and a big chunk of fresh watermelon in there to soak up some of the mezcal. It's absolutely delightful and refreshing. Not a big fan of tequila, but I love mezcal.
