Dear TwiKing, the reason why you won that close play with Mario is because he has a running power. All characters with running powers are granted a second chance if they mess up the first time. This only implies when they're running from base to base. If a character with a running power is catching he or she still only has one shot because he or she is not running but fielding. Here are all the characters who I can recall with running powers: Mario, Baby Mario, Bowser, Bowser Jr, both Koopa Troopas (but not Para Troopa), all the Dry Bones, King Boo, Boo, Monty Mole, Blooper, and Wiggler. If you want to check a character's power(s) you can when you're selecting them. Press 1 and move the cursor over a player.
