Something I never noticed about fusion, until I replayed the mission on Pt. Ultimate, is that regen health with every attack.

Technically the fusion isn't some ultimate form that's indestructible. In both gameplay and game lore it is very possible to defeat it if you do enough damage, so it remedies that by absorbing energy with each successful strike, basically stealing lifeforce to replenish it's own since the fusion is technically a failsafe to bring you back from the dead.
