"You can play our games, just don't use illegal software to do it". Then Sephiroth came out, and everyone just moved on. Being realistic, with all info available it seemed more like a workplace spat. Like, at my job I have people I dislike but in front of clients+coworkers I tolerate them because it’s professional. That’s the thing with the Organizers they saw Alan as trying to hold a monopoly over tournaments and strong arm them. I don’t have access to these logs but if I have a bunch of TOs saying “yeah Alan tried to strong arm us.” They didn’t want to say it in public because the drama would’ve hurt their tournaments and played nice with Alan because they didn’t want to risk dealing with Nintendo.

I totally agree with Hopcat actually. I had the same reflexion at some point. The problem with this is though even if it's 100% true, this take is pointless in actuality in the end. Here is why. At the end of the day Nintendo always is the biggest problem, we know it. But since Nintendo is untouchable, if we're smart as a community we should at least try not to mess up our interactions with them when they make a step towards the Smash Community. And that's precisely what Alan did. So it just makes sense that the community is against him and not Nintendo. It's the only reaction we're allowed to have basically. Nintendo is what you have to deal with, like it or not and it doesn't seem like they're going to change their attitude anytime soon. So you can always put Nintendo out of the equation because of this. The only thing we can do regarding them is to try to respond in the best way when they decide to do a step in the right direction for the community. And Alan simply fucked up at doing this simple thing. He deserves all the hate because hating on Nintendo is pointless even if they also absolutely deserve it in short. Alan knew it was big, he knew it was a special opportunity and that makes what he did even way worse and unforgivable.
