Difference between the two situations is that McKenna would have footballing personell above him, with an actual strategy. Is he good enough? Probably not, but he will have a better structure above him. He would have more support than ETH ever did. He’ll likely finish higher than ten hag and have better support in the transfer window, things that everyone post Fergie didn’t have.

The issue is Sir Jim wants the legacy. He doesn’t just want to be a silent partner who does a good job behind the scenes and get under the radar credit. He wants to narrative to be “Sir Jim saved Man Utd”. Can’t do that with a manager who is the clear face of the club.
