I'm actually tasting a Chardonnay from South Africa right now..... It's delicious! 😍👍 I didn't know South Africa made my favorite wine! I'm really impressed! 💓🍷🍾

Great info, especially for the unknown-to-south-african-wine viewers! Unfortunately there are still many wines made in bulk. But if you spend more then Euro 10 or $15 you're likely to have an unforgettable experience. I myself prefer an oak aged SB or 1685 Chardonnay Boschendal from Stellenbosch, a clean crisp SB from Waterkloof Estate, Schapenberg, Stellenbosch, a structured and complex red from Hemel-en-Aarde or a strong red like Kanonkop - 100% Pinotage Oak aged, from Simonsberg, Stellenbosch.

M.A.N. has the craziest value I've ever seen! Their free-run Steen is delicious and under $10 most of the time. hard to believe.

To check the label at www.sawis.co.za/sealsearch.php .. the site says: "Only SAWIS members who wish to view their Wine of Origin certification information or competitive related information (inventories and quantitative figures, whilst entering and/or in the midst of any harvesting season, price information and strategic documents) need apply. If you are not registered as a SAWIS member please complete and submit the appropriate SAWIS forms. " FYI

Hey wine cast! Could you make a cast covering Port and sherry???
@TheUnknownWinecaster
@TheUnknownWinecaster 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the request. Two separate casts on Port and Sherry are coming up soon. They each have a lot of moving parts, so getting them together is taking a lot of my energy, but I'm looking forward to them. Cheers!

Nothing on fairtrade? 😗 I just saw this documentary on how the workers are still to this day, not treated fair and equal. Totally agree with the Pinotage comment, the same goes for Chenin! There are some ballers out there 😉🍷👍

I hear where you're coming from, it's just beyond the scope of an introductory cast like this one. I've been kicking around the idea of doing some casts on values-related issues in wine, and I think I'll experiment with doing that type of cast when I do the cast you suggested (that I haven't forgotten about) on prohibition and see how it goes. Thanks as always for the comment (and for the back up on Pinotage) and for watching!

That's a great idea! We always get the positive side of the wine trade when there is a lot going on behind the scenes. In Norway, they only cover the 6/6 rated wines and such. Btw it was not meant as criticism to the video. I loved it and there is just too much to cover in one single cast. Looking forward to the next one (and especially the prohibition video!) Keep it up my friend!!

I have to admit South Africa is the least favourite of the big new world producers of wine. I had some truly horrible bottles. One Cabernet Sauvignon was so ashy I couldn't even use it for cooking. Perhaps I was simply unlucky and should check out some of the producers shown in this video, but so far as a European I would always prefer Chilean, Australian and US wines.

Restless River Cabernet. Best in the country if not the world right now. About £50 a bottle.

Its all producer dependant. Under $15 you Springfield Estate wines are phenomenal and punch way above their price tag, theres also Saronsberg and La Motte that is worth a try. Between $15 and $30 you can look at De Grendel, Anthonij Rupert OPTIMA is consistently great, The Chocolate block is always a winner and pretty much anything from Meerlust. Most wines over $30 will be very good If its a dessert wine you are after Klein Constantia Vin De Constance is possibly the best dessert wine in the world or one of. Kings vied for possession of this wine; Louis Philippe sent emissaries from France to fetch it; Napoleon drank it on the island of St Helena to find solace in his lonely exile; Frederick the Great and Bismarck ordered it; and the English Prime Minister - who had sampled it with much delight at Downing Street - made sure that regular consignments from the Cape were delivered to Buckingham Palace for the King. Charles Dickens and Jane Austen wrote about it. That said regarding any wine world wide, vintage plays a massive role so if you or anyone does get a chance to grab hold of anything from a 2015 vintage in South Africa. It is said to be one of the greatest years for South African wine. Tim Atkin MW scored the 2015 Kanonkop Paul Sauer 100 points! Its the first time a wine from a new world area has ever received 100points.

Look up the Dutch East India company. All about trade and development. Brought European tech and engineering to Southern Africa. It was just a matter of time and the Suez slowed this down.
