There's actually something incredibly heartwarming about Skarloey taking a crash to protect Rheneas. None of the other engines go out of their way to protect another like this, and it's a really important element of his character. It's wild how despite how often post-classic seasons got Skarloey totally wrong, they did give him a truly standout moment like this and it's just another reason why he's my favorite engine.

He’s mine too, he’s the reason I got back into the series. I was going through a really dark time in my life when I found Tug’s video on him. If you ask me, this is just a testament to the remarkable bond between those two. It’s clear that they’d do anything for each other. That was one of only two sensible accidents he had in the HIT era, the rest of them… I honestly don’t know what the writers were thinking. If we take out those five stupid ones, then he only would’ve had five, because I believe that Tug missed one. He also had an accident in that boulder episode, if I’m not mistaken, I believe that a water tower broke into pieces when he rushed into that siding, and some of them fell on him.

While "James to the Rescue" is a very subpar episode, i think it has my favorite crash of all time just because it's so funny. You have Gordon stuck, and Toby is telling James "this isn't gonna work" and James goes for it anyways. They don't even entertain for a single second that James' plan is going to work. There's not even a moment where they go "it's working!" It IMMEDIATELY fails.

So fun fact, "Accidents will Happen" is how I discovered the Classic Series. As a child of the mid-2000s I was born at the worst time for Thomas. Hit acquired the rights several months before I was born, and I was aging out of Thomas by the time Matel was trying to revitalize the franchise with Brenner. My only exposure to Classic Thomas was a few DVDs and one of them contained the "Accidents will Happen" music video. I loved that video, and would often try reenact it as a little kid. During one of these reenactments I got into an agreement with my dad about whether the video showed actual crashs from the show, or just B-roll made specifically for the song. He said B-roll, I said show. So I bet him that I could find all the clips from "Accidents will Happen" (as well as the Hit song "Surprises") in actual episodes. This got preschool and early-elementary me to search through dozens of old DVDs cataloged on Netflix and Amazon prime to find these scenes, which is how I discovered Classic Thomas. I actually managed to find all but one ("Bulstrode") with my dad's help, before "Grandpuff" sort-of scared me away from Classic Thomas.

I know the HIT era is generally looked down upon, but I have to admit, they got really creative with crashes during that time. As for a favorite? Any crash from Season 6. Over half the episodes have crashes, and particularly Buffer Bother, Dunkin' Duncan, and The World's Strongest Engine made me CRACK UP as a kid. Aside from The Great Discovery, Gordon Takes A Tumble probably has the most insane crash in the model series. It lasts like 20 seconds! What were they smoking when writing the stories for Season 6? Who cares; I love it!

It’s down to their construction. Two-axle wagons with somewhat loose chains and generally cheap bodywork and effectively no brakes, are just going to be more trouble to work with than wagons with bogies, air-brakes, and sturdier metal bodies. This holds true for wagons in real life. I mean, it’s mainly the brakes and couplings, but the cheap construction doesn’t help either.

I know one rare scene when a loco pushes a train infront of itself, though it is done because of a crash. In "Thomas and The Breakdown Train" Thomas pushes the breakdown train to where James crashed, and also pushes som trucks without damaging them, but their is also a slightly crash most for the visual when Thomas bumps a truck into a one hangin in the breakdown train.

In my headcannon, the actual crash that Lady had which put her out of service for years was this: Diesel 10 one day threatened to destroy her, Lady and Burnett Stone steamed away as fast as they could! At some point during the escape, Lady made it to the magic buffers, but Diesel 10 made her go so fast that she shot straight out of the magic buffers, completely missed the tracks and went tumbling down muffle mountain! Burnett Stone jumped clear though, don't worry about that younger kids!

Like if Spencer getting covered in rocks counts Shouldn't D10's incident too? 2. When Vinnie crashes into Gina's flatbeds, Shouldn't that be counted towards Gina's crash count too? 3. In No Help At All, when Ben shunts the truck to Bill, some rocks fall out, when Bill bumps it, it goes over one of said rocks and then falls over, so shouldn't this also count as Ben's fault? 4. Tug says the breakaway in a close shave is technically the first edward crash, but wouldn't his first one be in Cows? Like Yeah Edward didn't derail/uncouple his vans, cows did, but Edward was still apart of it going by Tug's rules. 5. In Thomas and the Big Bang (Bazinga), shouldn't Skarloey count as being someone who caused the many accidents for whistling? He did a lot of damage for his whistling. Idk, its a bit of a stretch so I get why it's not in here. 6. When Spencer rushed past Emily, shouldn't that count as a Spencer crash too? Again a bit of a stretch but he's the one who startled Emily leading to her crash 7. In the Calling All Engine Fight, it is implied that Gordon got into some kind of accident. It looks like he's covered in seaweed perhaps, so again, another stretch, it could count that Gordon had another crash. Again, don't mean to be picky, I just love to point things out. Honestly I'm surprised at how low some of the older engines are. Daisy got off scott free until the CGI era, Edward and Toby being as low as they were for their ages, James not even making the top 3, but the biggest surprise for me has to be Diesel not even crossing the 20 mark. Oh and every Skarloey line engine not named Skarloey was a shock too. I remember everyone spectacularly accident prone on that lane. Maybe it's just that one monstrous crash Peter Sam took always being loud in my brain that made me think that, which by the way is my pick for best crash in the franchise.

Oh, James Gets a New Coat! Not only did he push his train without a crash (just ruining his new coat) but I find it so funny because he was the only "Track Star" to avoid the train push curse in Season 8. I'm not counting the coal loader incident here partly because it was one truck and partly because he backed into it and wasn't pushing forward like Thomas, Percy, and Emily were! It took until Season 12 for that curse to catch up to him, but good on him for dodging it for so long
