Great intro. the music! your review corroborates my initial impressions of the new 2021 Speedmaster 3861. I couldn't resist this one and picked up the Sapphire on steel model yesterday. I'm proud to report that I couldn't be happier with this acquisition. I truly hope you rekindle your love for the Speedy TGV. Any viewer of the channel knows how much it has meant to you over the years, but I understand how you might not gravitate toward to the moonwatch forever, especially as you've stated you have smaller wrists. On my 7" wrist, this watch fits better than the old model ever could. What an update.

I got off Yelp a few years ago and I'm starting to have the same feeling about KZbin and KZbinrs. They only way to get attention is to "love or loathe" something. I just received my 1963 Cal.321 back from service from Omega in Switzerland. It has always been one of my favorites in my collection. I have toyed with the idea of passing her onto someone else to enjoy but I just can't do it. If you ever need a perfect, unblemished example of an original 321 for comparison let me know.

I know you have an association with WW2. Great men all of them! Alas I digress. I have well over 200 watches. I have several chronographs, including a Speedmaster. I'm considering getting another Speedmaster through a deal with one of my other watches. I have this to say: My Speedmaster is my most reliable chronograph. It's also the oldest, being from 1969; my other chronographs are from mid 90's to 2019, and have all been acting up from time to time. My potentially 2nd Speedmaster is one with a cal. 321 (all Speedy-fans should have a cal. 321 if they can afford one!). My current Speedmaster is a "transitional", that is, the very first with the cal 861.

The second track is not less precise .. it is more precise because it is better aligned with the frequency of the movement. The 1/5 second track only made sense with the 321 movement … they maintained that 1/5 second track but it was useless because the chronograph track does not align !! If you look closely with the 1/3 of a second track the chronograph hand aligns perfectly

I just bought my new sapphire sandwich and I got it at an incredible deal. It is by far a thing of beauty! I absolutely love it!!!! and that's an understatement. Every time I look at it, it's just amazing. I would reconsider buying as it is far above the previous speedys. I love it! If in to a room, people will notice and respect this iconic masterpiece. I am a novice for sure, but I am loving this. If there's any doubt weather you should invest in this piece, I would say, go for the gusto as it will only become more iconic as time passes. I love mine and I'm sure you will love yours.

The Yema looks great, it is very cool to see the MN logo on the dial, too! I can’t wait for the Tudor although it will probably be out of my price range😂 The BB58 blue looks pretty similar to the original Tudor MN, so I’m interested if it will be more of a Pelagos style. I’d love to get one and wear it on a NDC strap!!

Great video. Got the hesalite on the nylon strap. Just as an aside the supplied package is different and doesn't include the extra straps or the loupe or tool or the medallion. The central portion does fold into a very useful travel box though with the cushion fitting snuggly. Loving my new and only Speedy. Regards G

The decrease in hashmarks is meant to represent the true frequency of the caliber : 3hz = 6 ticks per second divided by two = 3 marks. The 1861-63 was 3hz also but the marks were inappropriate, inherited from the 321 reference with 2.5hz (= 5 ticks per second)

with chronographs i always tend to prefer a smaller case size, the 38mm current black dial speedy with the co axial escapement and 100m water resistance might just be the perfect modern speedy imo.

Question for you: Seeing much internet discussion about the physical sharp edges of the new Speedy, and at other times push back against such claims. What was your experience? Were the machine edges sharper than the older version, would they give you a hot spot on your wrist or did the watch you handled feel just as non sharp or sharp as the prior version you had in the video?

I got my 3861 Speedy in July and I've been wearing it every day since. Are the edges sharper than my 1995 861 caliber? Certainly. Do they create any problems on your wrist or make the watch less comfortable? Absolutely not. The edges a little sharp but are no razor blades and you notice them only when you pick up the watch in the morning or pass the tip of you finger along them. My advice is don't be afraid of getting one for this reason if you love it.

7:35 -“While not as precise...” this is actually wrong. The track marks on the 2021 model are in fact the most precise, despite less divisions. This is because the movement is a 3Hz movement, hence divisible by 3.

Somehow I really dislike the new bracelet design on the 3861, except smaller at effective lug-to-lug which is good; also don't like the new clasp, older with micro adjustment is better. I really like the older versions, including on 1863 and those found on Planet Ocean. Is it just me and few others or most agree with this point?

Love the new bracelet. It's very comfortable and it's a remake of the original 1967 bracelet. Looks really good when on the wrist. The new clasp is actually classy understated. The old one really is clunky compared to the new bracelet and clasp. Regards

Part of the strict METAS testing is also water resistance, so it's actually tested to a depth of 50m which is more than most SCUBA divers go. You really don't have to worry about water with this one.

The 1861 movement is Rhodium plated. Do you know if there is any gold part or writing in that movement ? (for religious purposes). Does the yellow parts or writings contain gold? Hope not. I will express obviously a very subjective and personal opinion here, but no other watch in history has been this cool so effortlessly. Even despite the overbearing marketing tilt of Omega with "duh, we've been to the moon first" and other space stuff - it is deserved, there's nothing else to say really. Ignoring all that it's still an incredibly honest and unpretentious timepiece, which becomes an increasing rarity in a world of expensive luxury watches. It somehow still retains the attitude of "I'm meant to do work". It's the kind of watch you want to wear everyday. Also, it's one of those watches that look infinitely better in person than on any footage or picture I've seen. It somehow comes off as somewhat cheapened on pictures, but holding it and looking up close that feeling completely dissipates.

As always a great video. And hereby my 50 cents on the Speedmaster: It is a huge scratch magnet and the bezel just is to prone to small dents. But its just a cool watch! But I hope they will once use a steel alloy with higher hardness. From personal experience I call it the “Scratchmaster”

Imagine in the near future, once man sets up shop on the Moon. Omega sets up a factory on the moon and literally manufactures the Speedmaster Moonwatch on the Moon and than sends it back to Earth...a Real Moonwatch that's made and been on the moon and Imagine Omega also adds a small Moon Rock in the Box! A Man can dream.

I noticed the fluid of your lava lamp has gone pale. You need to keep it out of direct sunlight because the UV radiation will cause the color to fade. At least that’s the case with the original lava lamps from Mathmos.

The graduation of the minute track is now actually more accurate than it was before. The new movements after the 321 have been changed to a frequency of 3 Hz and thus no longer being 1/5 of a second - the 5 indices graduation was no longer accurate. Now they corrected it.

It's worth noting that the precision hasn't been affected by the reduction in hash count for the outer chronograph track. The seconds hand can now be stopped on and in-between the hashes, allowing for timing up to 1/6th of a second. The 1861's hashes were never updated despite the change in beat rate from 321 to 861.

Find me the guy that can accurately time something with a watch up to 1/6th of a second, and we can talk, ha! I actually found the opposite, I bought the new 3861 version, as i prefer the cleaner looking dial, and of course the movement, leaps and bounds over the old 1861. I do have the FOIS as well, which houses the 1861, and love it, so you really can't go wrong.

It's a metas certified watch. Meaning it is good for 50m water resistance. Theres watch mechanics on the Omega forums who have discussed this over and over again. You can swim to a depth of 50m with this watch, with no issue. End of discussion.

Great review as always! Very interesting commentary at the end. I have also long been an admirer of the Speedy, but I have to admit when I tried one on recently (this model) I was immediately underwhelmed. It was nice, but...there was just something missing, especially at the RRP they’re charging now. By comparison, the TAG Heuer Monaco really took me by surprise - now that really did feel something truly special. I’ll save my pennies for the time being, but I think it’s important to try stuff on and see it in the metal!

@Will Harris guys, I love the idea but I don’t have any problem with fit and I love the stock ‘Omega Speedmaster Professional’ clasp as well, no problems. Also, that new bracelet clasp is horrid. Hate the way it looks with the lines.

Anyone else pissed they discontinued the 40mm Speedmaster Racing but kept the 38mm one with those god awful oval dials? The one that costs more but has the same movement!?

I suppose water resistance really isn't much of a requirement for a watch designed to be used in space. But then again, how many buyers are going to use it in space?

Would love to see the Speedmaster take on two branches. Keep the hesalite model as close to the original for the purists and make the sapphire version the modern rendition. Give it all the bells and whistles, sapphire display case and crystal, 100m water resistance, ceramic bezel. If you're going to branch off might as well go all the way and make it a super watch. Great review and happy to see that you got to have your hands on one of these again!
