Do not ignore the recently announced in house automatic movement from Citizen, newly designed from the ground up. Citizen is going automatic for their flagship. This is a sea change at Citizen, and a return to their roots making railroad watches in Japan.

Always great to see you two wonderful pillars of the watch enthusiast community together. I agree about Seiko. I think watch enthusiasts have been spoiled by Seiko in the past. But the reality is that new Seikos are better quality than the past and the price reflects it. I have no problem with them moving up market. For instance, I feel if the current Alpinist said Tissot on the dial you’d have watch enthusiasts screaming about great value.

I found that I'd done with SEIKO long before I'd realised. I owned only quartz watches and gravitated towards Citizen because I was tired of the battery replacement issues. It wasn't until my wife bought me my Seamaster Chronograph in 2020 that I understood the whole "new" world of automatic movements. I would not currently look at Seiko for a new watch unless it was something very special. This is because the way I feel they're pricing some customers out. I've just received my first Islander and absolutely love it. I bought my wife one too. These collaborations with Marc are brilliant :-)

You both are in really great shape!! Thank you for this video! When Glycine was bought by Invicta, they lost some of their "aficionados", they've also changed the logo on the dial, and this also affected the love for the brand by someone. I really like Glycine. I think changing some characteristic so imprinted into the uniqueness of the brand, could affect likeness of the brand by its lovers, like for Tudor leaving the snowflake hand or Rolex using base metal cases, or like for Sinn to abandon their Dehumidifying Technology... Anyway if Squale will make a strict dress watch wr 30m, I would not complaint, but, can you imagine such a watch with a "squale" logo on the dial?

the chats you have with Marc are always fun and informational. I think it would be great if companies looked to their past and brought back some of their old designs with a modern flare. Hi. Recent subscriber and new watch enthusiast here. Love both of you guys snd have been binge watching both channels. One thing that sticks out to me is that the more I watch true enthusiasts discuss watches I rarely hear the names Tag Heuer and Citizen. These are two watches I’ve followed long before my recent fascination with the hobby. I understand Citizen doesn’t do a lot of mechanical movements but the Eco-Drive is surely a step up from other quartz and even reputable solar movements. As for Tag, did something happen? Just something I’ve been scratching my head about. Anyways, keep up the quality content boyos

Good evening TGV, good to see you two guys back! Great topic you bring up. To reinvent a watch brand I guess it takes a really strong and determined personality in command. My biggest issue with seiko is quality control. They want to move up market im fine with that and also willing to pay more but only if the watches are right. My last purchase 2 months ago was a SBDC125, $1200 and when the thing came in it had a misaligned bezel insert. I wasn't that mad because i can fix it myself but most people wont attempt something like that nor should they have to after spending $1200.

Brilliant intro there and fantastic video guys! Seiko are definitely on the up and up, still need to address alignment issues but the offerings are very attractive and successful. This might sound a bit off but I think that the Ali Express brands that are homaging Seiko divers with NH35/36 movements and including ceramic bezels, sapphire crystals and solid end link bracelets with milled clasps is a big reason for Seiko beginning to up it's game in this area. Just an opinion but those AE watches are extremely successful in terms of price and often better build quality than the Seiko's they copied or homaged if you prefer. Of course I'm sure Seiko are making plenty of money selling their movements to these companies anyway. I suppose it's a bit like Samsung who supply many components including selling and licensing it's screen technology to Apple, its biggest competitor!

Another great discussion on a fascinating topic! It really is a shame to see some brands with real history go down the wrong path with poor branding choices (Movado, Wittnauer, etc.). I bought my first Seiko, a Samurai, only after buying 4 GSs. I was very happy with the Samurai and recently purchased the King Seiko reissue. As Swiss watch prices have moved up, the idea of spending more on a Seiko reference makes good sense. Now that even brands like Doxa have references for up to $4000, a Captain Willard reissue for $1300 looks inviting.

Interesting and worthwhile discussion. The biggest brand problem visible to me is the explosion of brands [looking at you Marc Frankel] that are made inexpensively in Chinese factories and equipped with the same inexpensive Seiko or Miyota movements, then branded in such a way that conceals the real source of manufacturing.

Now I'm not sure if Seiko is a brand I should even be considering. Also, I appreciate Mark's draw to watches. As an Engineer myself, I find I'm drawn to the beauty and complexity of watches that require various manufacturing processes to create. TGV/Marc...I think “customer service”...is the linchpin for both success and failure...and they both follow “QC”....I cant understand how Seiko holds on to its place in the industry with indices that don’t align...+ and - time accuracy that are atrocious along with watch bands that are crap....but they thrive! The only reason I still sport a Seiko is because I have a very talented watch maker in my town that turned my SKX 011 from being a + 30 second time pig into a +4 second per day time piece! My primary watch is a Squale’ 1545....+2 seconds per day...I couldn’t be happier! I do very much enjoy the videos when the two of are together...entertaining and educational. Than you!

Love these collaboration videos. I agree with Mark that Seiko has been successful in rebranding. Perhaps some of us may focus on what was lost with the new Seiko 5s, however I can see how they are targeting a younger audience and therefore another generation of consumers. I own a Tag Heuer Formula 1 quartz chrono and most would probably think I over paid, but it got me into the hobby and now I have Seikos, Certina, Victorinox, Bulova, Citizen, Tissot, and Orient along with some Dan Henry's, so I do not regret it. Tag Heuer gets a bad rap, however it's all part of this great hobby. Great job as always TGV.

Thanks for another great video guys. I feel like there’s potential here for a mid-week podcast! Few things I’ve taken away from today: 1. Citizen released a new auto. As a long term owner of a NY0040 - I would love to add another Citizen to the collection ) 2. Revisit the 5KX - I’d dismissed it initially 3. Check out the Fortis Marinemaster - Divers have always been more my thing than pilot’s watches - I commented on one of your early Fortis videos to request a review of the MM (now sounds like that could be timely?!) I was left wondering about the brand you wouldn’t own because of something they did. I was thinking of brands that have never featured, or have seldom featured on your channel over the years. I walked into the GS shop in knightsbridge in 2019 thinking I was going into a Seiko watch store. After checking out the prices (which surprised me as I never heard of GS) I realised what they were upto. I did my part in "re-brading" the luxury car of Toyota in the 1980's, carrying out research for them in the middle east, which eventually became Lexus. Toyota opted for name change and separate dealer shop, great way of going about it and left "Toyota" unchanged. The GS way i.e. by keeping the Seiko brand name in GS they had to in effect "re-brand" the established Seiko lines (virtually up the prices of Seiko coinciding with changes (am not sure how significant they are) with the movement etc). I bought many Seiko 5s at around Euro90 - Euro130, but now they are around Euro500. I would not buy Seiko at this price point and that is why I recently bought two Hamiltons, my first Hamiltons. (I was lucky to buy SKX007 and the flighty at a good price after seeing your other video on 10 best Seiko's, but would not buy any of the new stuff). Great work to you and Mark, thanks for the channel.
