On the other hand, one of my friends still has a S6 Edge which is also from 2015 and is super laggy, super old OS, the screen is burned out so you can hardly tell the time and components are wibbly. both phones around $750 at retail in EU
@stanleyc29785 жыл бұрын
@@Mivrox very shitty comparison considering you are two different people that take care of your phones differently. I had an s4 that lasted be 5 years before the charging port went and that phone went everywhere. It was banged up and sandfilled and still worked perfectly. I just took the battery out, charged, and popped it back in. That being said, you'll always end up saving with an Android simply because Apple devices nowadays at least, are designed to be nearly unrepairable and are more fragile than ever. Older devices, in general, were more durable. You can find dozens of videos of people exposing Apple devices and repair recommending a brand new device because of a simple design issue with their products.

@JerehmiaBoaz6 жыл бұрын
It's not just marketing in the sense of advertising, it's the price point also. Most traditional brands just aren't affordable to MVMT's and DW's target market, and those that are affordable don't offer the right design and size. People want these big dress watches and they use them more as fashion accessories than as status symbols. They can't afford the traditional dress watch brands but they don't want a $20 watch either, that's why these new brands are so popular.
@MrSamusdark6 жыл бұрын
JerehmiaBoaz There certainly are affordable watches at a similar price point or cheaper. Most people don't know about them though because they want watches as a fashion accessory. @JerehmiaBoaz6 жыл бұрын
@@MrSamusdark I know there are better watches for the same price but because people want watches as a fashion accessory, the watches need to look right and follow the fashion trend of the day. I think his channel represents everything that is Anti-DW ☠️ The Episode was superbly thought out and hopefully gets played out for an even greater audience over time. I will share on my social media and talk about my renewed journey into Watches and benefiting immensely from UGC. The only issues I have and I’m knit picking somewhat are terms like ‘entry level’ or ‘even a Casio’. It’s certainly not snobbery but... it’s kind of hedging it. I mean who wants to hear that if you go to buy a car and have it put into that sort of category. Oh I’m driving around in my new ‘entry level’ car, yea! To me this is what fuels a brand like DW, even that mentality not necessarily the blatant snobbery. If something is superbly designed to the point of being timeless, then it’s not about the price or obtainability it can come in at any price. If I can afford to buy it or not as a designer I admire and appreciate it no matter what. I think DW is a ‘Marketing Ploy’ watch not really a fashion watch too. I think that would be a better definition and understanding. I think to some degree ‘fashion’ is an okay term and can influence design for some timeless Watches. I think to some degree all Watches have styling with some degree of what would be fashionable in them even if it’s a retro design. I think the Watch industry needs to embrace this concept too☝🏼 Brian Knight @TheKnightTP

This is a quite fascinating coincidence: Before I was about to rewatch this great video (which I as a Swede think should be mandatory for every young person who's about to buy a watch), I happened to watch an episode of a Swedish "lifestyle show" which was rerun quite late at night. They have two hosts: An artist well known here, and another guy who's supposed to be an expert on lifestyle stuff like food, dressing, beverages etc. They both banter off a little at each other in an entertaining way. In this episode they had a watch theme. The "expert host" rightly visited Sjöö-Sandström, which is one of the few watchmakers we've had in Sweden. Really cool to see their little manufactory with a shop in southern central Stocholm. Great idea for this episode. They also had a morning-TV host showing some of his interesting and expensive collection of vintage watches. Again, great. Then the same guy presents his idea of five interesting watches in various values. I actually don't remember the fourth one now, but it was an Omega Deville, a Rolex Datejust, and finally his Certina inherited from his grandfather (which of course was the priceless one, due to the affection). Again, all fine and dandy. HOWEVER, (and here's finally the point after the tl; dr) he started with in his opinion a nice and elegant entry level watch from these five ones (the most interesting aspect for me, the others felt like "the usual suspects"). I was hoping for something like Orient Bambino, Tissot Everytime etc. Well, guess what brand came up. Guess my level of severe disappointment. Guess why I reacted over-dramatically like Charlton Heston in the ending of Planet of the Apes.

I think that if Timex marketed the Fairfield as heavily as MVMT and DW marketed their watches they’d rule the market. A DW is just a massively overpriced Fairfield that’s not even up to the latter’s standard. For the price of a Daniel Wellington, I’d personally prefer a more classic, 60s sort of look. The Timex Marlin reissue is one of the best, and if I were to go with an even more minimalist design I’d consider something a bit different, like a vintage Poljot Deluxe. Seiko even has many watches that could compete well for less, like the SNKL41.
@mrbacchus61276 жыл бұрын
Get the small seconds version of the Fairfield unless you enjoy loud ticking.

Peter Aremone To be fair, MVMT doesn’t sound particularly upmarket either, and they sell well. Similarly, I see Nixon everywhere and they don’t sound as posh as Daniel Wellington. The key seems to be marketing when it comes to selling at lower price points from what I’ve seen at least.

One day at the office, One of the bosses noticed that I was wearing a new watch. She said, "Is that a Daniel Wellington?". I replied with, "No boss, this is a Timex." I then added that it costed me around $40 and that it lights up when you push the crown, when you need to read the time when it's dark. I was wearing a Timex Fairfield 41mm, and I gave this watch to my fiancé so that she can atleast understand the joy of this hobby.

We here in Japan are laughing at these DW watches. Although, I commend the briliance in their marketing. In short, these watches are the cheapest watch, given usually by companies, weddings, airlines, hotels, Embassies, Government Organisations, etc as a thank you token for attending. I have countless of these watches given to me at every Diplomatic functions or Summit. I recognize straight away from the hour and minute hand as well as the lowest quality strap. These watches will lasts few months max and probably a year if lucky and unworn. My family, tend to order these cheap watches when they host a Diplomatic receptions at our residence. As an Ambassador in a Diplomatic Corp, we give gifts just as a formality to our guests but we'll never give these out to our VIP guests. When we mass order, we can instruct the factory to put any brand or logo we desire. This is exactly what Daniel Wellington Company did. Just slap a British name and create a simple back story where nobody can back it up. I would have more satisfaction wearing a cheap knockoff, not that I would, than any of these Daniel Wellingtons. Not even if they pay me to wear these. Good video educating and informing the unaware new watch enthusiasts.

I know the stigma of the watch crowd against Daniel Wellington but it's what got me interested in watches. Never used to wear watches until my girlfriend gifted me a Daniel Wellington. I wore it for a year till I couldn't go out of the house without a watch on my wrist - broke the strap one day and then started researching about what straps to buy - stumbled upon the watch community: forums videos and whatnot and then fell in love with the mechanical watches. So now I have a slowly growing watch collection but the Daniel Wellington still has a honored place in my watchbox along with the fond memory of how my appreciation for watches all began.

The success of DW and MVMT is pretty easy to explain: They put their effort into advertising. And as you said, they're aiming for the younger crowd. Unless you've actually been shopping for one, when's the last time you saw a Seiko ad online? A Timex ad? And I think overreaching (for lack of a better word) is also a problem. If I bought a Seiko 5 from you for $75, what in Jeebus's name makes you think showing me a Grand Seiko ad is going to get you a sale?
@ccharvey19836 жыл бұрын

The Grand Seiko is aspirational. Like how B&W is producing the Nautilus... how many are buying one? You make and market high end models in order to attract people to the brand. If they can make something great, the more affordable products surely must be good too. There is one more thing to DW and MVMT: They make watches that normal people like. Just from a visual standpoint, I'd much rather get one of those than a Seiko 5. Seiko doesn't have to stop making the watches they do, but they should hire good designers who cater to the more minimalist style. I'm wearing a Jacob Jensen, which has the name embossed on the case... That's the only branding there is. It's as minimal as it can be without losing too much functionality. Show me something gorgeous, Seiko, and I will buy it. But I can't find anything from them. If you have anything written on them, the font needs to be perfect. Perfectly chosen, spaced and sized. How about the designers behind Farer? Those are some incredibly good looking watches. Sleek but playful. Like Nomos, but different.

I totally agree with the last point and actually I think is the only advantage to this watch. I have bought my DW 6 years ago, before their name started to show everywhere. A friend of mine found this company by chance on the internet and showed it to me and we liked its appearance so we bought a couple. At the time, everyone was recommending the look of the watch I'm wearing, and it was somewhat special. Nonetheless, recently I started to notice DW watches on many wrists around me and I felt that the only thing I liked about this watch is that I was wearing something special, but not anymore. I felt the need to upgrade to a watch that looks good, with good quality and from a known brand so I can enjoy it no matter whether the people around me would appreciate it or not, not just a watch that looks different (in my context). Nowdays I have 6 watches on my collection and many more to be added thanks to YOU, as you were and still are my guide to horology. I'm very proud and really enjoying every second with these watches: 1- Seiko Alpinist 2- Sarb033 3- Seiko SNK803 4- Seagull 1963 5- Casio F-91w 6- Casio Dbc611-1 (calc.) All that within a year. Coming from someone who had at one point considered purchasing a Daniel Wellington as my first nice, expensive watch, I can see why some people are upset about the company. I had discovered the company, like many others, through social media. I enjoy minimalistic designs and found the watches to be simple and elegant. Ultimately, the simplistic design was what dissuaded me from purchasing the watch as I felt the $250-300+ asking price was a bit too much. Fast forward a few years and here I am searching for a watch. Thankfully I have discovered TGV and his channel. The points made in this video that Filip Tysander is a (successful) businessman and not a watchmaker, that watches of the very same design and quality can be purchased for tens of dollars and that there are many quality alternatives at the same price point highlight the criticism around Daniel Wellington watches. It also highlights why I was lucky to have learned this lesson for free and not after a $300 payment. Kudos to you sir. Keep spreading your passion and knowledge.
