Week 14 - Sunday, May 26, 1985
Attendance: 44,539
TV: ABC
Holder Rick Partridge picked up a dropped snap on a field goal attempt and ran 9 yards for the winning touchdown at 3:53 of overtime Sunday, rallying the New Jersey Generals to a 30-24 triumph over the Tampa Bay Bandits.
Partridge, the Generals' punter, mishandled the snap from center when putting the ball down for an attempted 27-yard field goal by Roger Ruzek. He then picked up the ball and scooted down the left sidelines for the TD as the Generals completed a majestic comeback before an estimated Tampa crowd of 32,000.
The score was set up by Doug Flutie's 49-yard pass to Clarence Collins to the Bandits' 18.

I have been watching a lot of your videos the past 2 weeks, I loved the USFL as a little kid but now I am watching it and understanding the game. Some real talent on that field that never got into the NFL, and of course some NFL future stars/Probowlers and HOFers in this league

Generals had a great backfield. Maurice Carthon and Hershel Walker.

Dan Livni I would say Jim Kelly and Steve Young. They both went to five Super Bowls between them. The again there is Rickey Sanders who was an MVP.

The Tampa Bay Bandits just like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the opposing team wear the bright colors while they wear the white uniforms.

Loved the USFL. I thought the idea of spring football was great and the by the third year the league was showcasing some top notch teams. As evidenced by this game.

I agree Mike. The NFL is so full of themselves because they know they're the only game in town.
@USFLForever

For the simple fact Mike that there are too many touch bags who want a quick buck in return. They re not willing or have the financial staying power to be patient for 5 years. Also the ones who DO have the money (Zuckerberg, Gates etc) are just geeks that have no interest in sports.

Would have been great if they had stayed with the Dixon Plan and given the league time. The league was just in it's infancy and it was just beginning to establish itself as a legitimate league.

Yes, Hershel was the big splash who turned the NFL down for a better lucrative deal with USFL. That's what the AAF needs to do and draw the young college boys who won't get drafted

Who do you think was the most successful player in the NFL who played in the USFL? I say Reggie White
@steveswangler6373
@steveswangler6373 9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Livni very tough to argue with that pick. only person I can think of who might be close is Jim Kelly, for leading Buffalo to 4 consecutive Super Bowls. but Kelly was one of the best of his time, while Reggie was one of the greatest of all time.

I would consider Gary Zimmerman and Sam Mills as a legit suggestions for the most successful. Some might even suggest Steve Young. I would even throw in Kent Hull... although he had to move to Special Teams and Fullback to have a very long career but Hershall Walker proved to be an all around great football player. If Kickers count.... Sean Landetta was the best punter in the league for a while. However Reggie White to me was the most Successful because he was the best Defensive Lineman I have ever seen play.
