Jimmy Dore got me into watching politics on KZbin. He always came across as kind of an idiot, but his whole schtick was "even an idiot like me can see what's wrong with the world." And it was appealing since he did address plenty of actually important issues. But over time I noticed that he seemed to talk about stuff that I actually cared about less and less, so I jumped ship from watching him well before he went off into the deep end. It was very surprising hearing about him again like a year or two later and seeing that he was apparently now best known for vaccine conspiracism. Even his audience was far more reasonable when I used to watch him. I remember that at one point he put out a video going off against nuclear energy, and the comments section was filled with people mostly saying that they respectfully disagreed with Jimmy on this one. He has probably replaced almost his entire old audience with a completely different one by now. Crazy world we live in.

I think what particularly turned me off was when “Even an idiot like me can see what is wrong with the world” became “Even an idiot like me can see what is wrong with the world… and I’m the only one who knows how to fix it”. You can’t walk both lines at the same time, you either are an idiot or a political strategic genius, you have to pick one. This was probably best highlighted later, during the “force the vote” campaign, where any politician that didn’t follow through on Jimmy’s prescribed strategy was immediately smeared as a sell out, because god forbid they have strategic disagreements in how political change is accomplished (and perhaps the politicians know and understand a bit more about this than a “jag-off night comedian”). I didn’t even necessarily disagree strongly with the force the vote strategy, but the absolutism with how is was treated was disgusting and reeked of hubris. Political strategy is not simple, acting like it is and make it into an absolute, well, that’s what Sith do.

Pretty spot on with the timeline. Dore was on Joe Rogan and had a great anti-Hillary/anti-establishment rant, "Hillary wasn't the lesser of two evils" here on KZbin, that obviously I enjoyed as a Trump supporter. In it he really rails on Americas foreign entanglements and comes off as very anti-war. Fast forward a little bit and Trump does a troop draw down in Syria that fucks over the Kurds that people are, imo, unfairly lambasting him over. "I wonder if that lefty Dore guy has enough integrity to say Trump did a good job." Loe and behold he did and I decided Dore was someone I could trust and began watching more of his content. That continued up until around the start of the lockdowns when I started watching less and less. I was very much getting the "Breaking Points" vibe of "leftist who suspiciously only attacks Democrats" from him as well and started watching the Twitch left (Hasan/Destiny/Vaush). It all comes full circle for me in 2021 when Biden pulls out of Afghanistan. "I wonder if that politically suspicious Dore guy has enough integrity to say Biden did a good job." Nope. Not a single word about how good it was to finish a 20 year forever war. Not a peep. He could rip Biden about saying the Afganis didn't fight hard enough and for leaving military hardware but nothing about the war itself. Mr. Anti-war loves Trump for a troop drawdown in Syria but hates Biden for ending an illegal occupation? That was the day the Jimmy Dore I loved was fully dead to me.

@@BillMayonaise I'm glad you had this evolution. I was in a similar direction in some regards but more in the Reason Magazine kind of direction. My evolution happened after the 2012 election where I had supported Ron Paul. I had been watching TYT for years and even Sam Seder since 2010. I think the earliest things that started me to move to the actual left were questions over climate change and reading some Chomsky. The climate change issue was interesting because when you're a smug libertarian you can point to plenty of economists who support supply side (trickle down) economics because the field of economics is much more subject to how how you frame your question and therefore personal biases are pervasive in the field. So I could tell myself that I stood with the "intellectuals" by supporting tax cuts and deregulation. But there is virtually nowhere in the field of climate science or even earth science where the data on anthropogenic global warming is divided. The jury is in and it's real so I kind of had to make an exception on my "small government" politics because obviously nothing in the free market was going to fix that. But seeing the hostility from both the right in general and especially the libertarian movement when it came to climate change politics helped me open my eyes that the movement wasn't some rational approach to policy but an extremely biased movement. Also, reading some discourse on why human property isn't some innate moral law but really it's a product of society and time and that taxation being theft was not really a moral argument so much as a way for rich people to dodge giving up any portion of their wealth. By 2016 I'd moved well into the social democrat direction. I explored true socialism and where I am now is that I'm morally okay with true socialism but skeptical of doing it in practice. But I'd argue we need to be in a nordic type government system before we can have debates about true socialism.

I'm the kind of person they like to target, a working class straight white man, I even shave my head like many right-wingers do (although I do it because I'm balding). But the right just doesn't have anything to offer, nothing whatsoever. The entire ideology is predicated on the idea that if you what to join in the brigade of hatred, you can, but they don't actually offer any policy improvements other than 'lets make minorities and women suffer'. When people get upset about 'wokeness' or inclusivity or progressiveness or anything like that, I always ask 'but why is it bad, what's so wrong about it?' I never get a solid answer, either its a conspiracy theory that has never come true, or I start getting ad hominems thrown my way like 'wishy washy lefty', 'unpatriotic' or even 'race traitor', then it's just mask off at that point isn't it? It just confirms my concerns and doubts I had about right-wing politics in the first place. Oh sure we can point to one or two incidents here and there, maybe some loophole that meant a dangerous prisoner got released early, but then I've been living under a right-wing government now for nearly 14 years and that sort of thing still happens anyway. But all the good things in life, all the benefits I get from public services and the government like the national health service, all that is just being stripped away by the right-wing government. Finally after 14 years the voters are getting so sick of them that even most of their loyal voters are flipping and they are pretty much guaranteed to be gone at next election. I’m glad from basically the beginning of giving Jimmy Dore a few listens with an open mind, that I almost immediately found his personality incredibly irritating, just fingers on a chalk board grating, to the point I could not care what his positions on anything were. This was years ago and before he went on his current trajectory. I never had to witness or care about any kind of transition. (Although I did enjoy a little of a video of him from a while back in a comedy club I think here in NYC where he and some other “comics” were mocking Bari Weiss’ appearance on Rogan which I’m guessing he wouldn’t do anymore.)

its such a shame to see Cornel West, the writer of Race Matters, a book that has influenced me immensely, become so politically insubstantial when he couldn't been such a force in the democratic primaries even if he didn't win. I usually don't get doomer but this specific arc has been difficult for me to overcome tbh. Especially after the news of him being involved with the florida school stuff. I think however it really does indicate the problem the left has with trying to push itself away from its Cold War politics. There are older lefties like West and Chomsky who react to Ukraine with pessimism due to the Cold War era and then there are young lefties on the other end of the age spectrum who don't understand that being associated the USSR is very bad for a modern political movement (not to mention that the USSR wasn't even leftist anyways). They're both anti-American in a nonsensical way that actually hurts the left. I know this comment has nothing to do with. the vid, just a random thought lol

My father-in-law has been watching Jimmy Dore for years now and I've watched the fall from when he was on TYT to where he is now. According to my father-in-law says he is the only one speaking the truth. Jimmy Dore and no matter what you tell him he doesn't believe you. When you try to talk to him about it, he kind of goes the same way Jimmy does screaming and yelling because we're not following his points and apparently my immune system is dead because of the four vaccines I got. So unfortunately he is the lost cause and you have to be careful when you're down visiting to make sure he's not watching. Russell Brandon or Jimmy because it's just non-stop downgrading and calling everybody idiots because we don't drink the same Kool-Aid he does. I've told him many times someone needs to put a tattoo across your forehead saying misinformed and misled.

Breaks my heart that Dr. West and Vaush (and the Vaush community) don't vibe with each other. Some of the comments have gotten kinda nasty in some cases. From comments about his focus on racial justice and claims of Identity Politics, to plan and simply calling him an agent, to outright insulting his intelligence. Mind you, a lot of these insults are coming from young people who have no idea how long he has been fighting for justice. Just basing their opinion off of this presidential run. Dr. West should have run as a Democrat. He's a big enough name that he could have forced Biden to do actual debates. Running as a protest third party candidate is inherently bad and a vote for Trump. If this Country had instant (or even traditional) runoff for Presidential elections (which it should), it would be another story. But it doesn't and it isn't. By the way, a vote for the Libertarian candidate from an otherwise Republican voter is a vote for Biden by this same standard. I was a Jimmy Dore fan several years ago... I saw this coming right around the time he started bashing "antifa" and falling for the BS propaganda about how "antifa" is a group or organization... And therefor allowing anyone to cherry pick an incident caused by any anti-fascist dressed in black and attribute it to the entire antifa movement. I watched the show live everyday and I noticed that Jimmy had recently started reacting a lot more to audience imput from the chat... and really getting a lot of validation from it... To the point were he would aggressively scream at and insult people who sent superchats he did not agree with... Because the chat would cheer him on he did it more and more... Jimmy after TYT was like a teenager who just had his political awakening and was obviously incredibly naive... But a problem with having a platform and followers is that you start getting full of yourself a little... There is no escaping it... But he got full of himself beyond belief. I tried to explain to him his views of antifa are incorrect... He told me to read Chomsky... "I have no arguments... Here read this book instead" - I am paraphrasing of course. I even confronted them (Jimmy and co-hosts) about their stance on not opposing Nazis live on the show... and they deflected and didn't answer the question. I knew right then and there that he was done for... The same way I knew in 2012 Ana Kasparian was done for... when she complained that she didn't want student debt forgiveness, because she had to pay her's off. They are just little moments that allow you to see the true ego-centrism and narcissisms behind many of these people who claim to care about others.

Democracy Now! was the first outlet I'd ever seen to critique the Dems from the left. And TYT, and then specifically Jimmy Dore/Aggressive Progressives, was the first I'd seen that did so in a way that had a cool, everyman voice. He was my favorite. Then I discovered Sam Seder and was intrigued (actually confused) by his dismissal of Jimmy as a crank, but I appreciated the discourse all the same. I kind of just wished they'd align. In retrospect, boy was Sam right on the nose. But I'll never forget Jimmy's trajectory and why I liked him. It helps me understand the general trajectory of these types of people, which also includes Alex Jones btw...
