I consider myself a photographic artist not a photographer mainly because I wanted to escape what I consider the banality that is the purely technical conversations that photographers must entertain. I graduated with the highest honors from art school so I know it's possible to conceptualize a body of work without the technical rearing its tedious head at every turn. His chess metaphor is really thought-provoking, imo. I am interested to see what the creative output of kids who grow up with access to this kind of technology will be. This may be too optimistic, but it would be really exciting to see kids using the low-effort output of playing with AI as inspiration for their artistic development, rather than an endpoint in of itself.

I think a lot of people stopped playing chess, so I don't think it's a great one. There's also the famous case where the go master retired after losing for the AI.

Actually, the game of chess is more popular then ever, due in part, by AI. Photography also spurred the development of impressionism and abstract expressionism in painting, since the camera could render scenes more accurately. As a result, painters took on new challenges. These new ways of seeing probably wouldn't have happened if Photography had never come around. New ideas, new technologies can create a positive feedback loop, rather than an ending. New art forms are born out of older ones. Photography never replaced Painting, they just grew in different directions. @@andregroc

It would be pretty easy to do with plagiarism. Happens all the time, in fact. The judges role is not to judge whether the creation process was authentic so I don't think he really proved any point

"Going forward, it's going to be important that everybody knows how the images that they're viewing were created." To an extent, I agree. People, in general, shouldn't be trying to pass AI generated images off as analog photography, for example. But, I think it's totally context dependent on whether it's important or "required" for an artist to disclose their creative process. In some situations, I think it's still totally valid, as it has been in the past, for an artist to keep their exact process as a mystery.
