As an Australian, in a country that is used to major and catastrophic fires, my heart goes out to all the survivors and fire fighters. I find some comments here lack compassion and the ability to know when not to comment.

I’m in NorCal and have been through this several times. Use an old backpack from either your kids or from a yard sale. Keep spare keys to vehicles and buildings in it, create a file to keep in it with copies of important documents (birth certificates, ALL insurances, bank account information, credit card information, a couple hundred dollars in cash, a written list of addresses and phone numbers of friends and family you can call for help that live out of your area, extra phone charging cable, etc). An old pair of shoes and one set of clothes (I know people that had to evacuate in their pajamas and slippers). Have one of these for every person in your household. If there looks to be an emergency in your area keep your car tank filled and back into your driveway so it’s fast and easy to get out.

We, as Australians, and me personally know only too well what it feels like to lose our homes in this manner. So my heart and empathy goes out to all the people who have lost loved ones, and are experiencing this life changing grief. Please remember that “stuff” is replaceable but lives are not. I was lucky to have saved my children, myself and all my all old style photographs, which are the memories that are irreplaceable, but the experience has left life long scars that still triggers my anxiety from time to time. Please, support any friends and family who have lived this experience, because they will need and appreciate your support forever more. Instead of doing yearly resolutions -- don't bother -- instead do SELF-CARE for yourself. Do things that bring you joy. It doesn't have to cost anything. Take a walk. Read a book. Take a bubble bath surrounded by scented lavender candles. Watch a good movie on your streaming service. Invite friends or family for a game night. Get a haircut. Have your hair professionally colored. Plan a spa day with a friend or alone. Get a mani/pedi. I do self-care every day for myself. Keeping a resolution is a set-up for failure. MOST people never keep their resolution(s).

I lived in the Palisades renting a room in a condo in 1986 at Sunset and Via de la Paz. From what I can tell that building is gone and I know the neighborhood well -- it's devastating to see aerial shots. It's like something out of a disaster movie. I now live in Woodland Hills in the Valley north of all of this over and above the Santa Monica Mountains - yet even here one can smell fire in the air - the wind gusts 24 hours ago were between 65 and 100 mph. It was actually hard to walk outside because of this.

Secondary, copies of paperwork. Practice and have a plan. I’ve lost all twice in a fires. Been in two floods. Snowstorms. Ice storm with no electricity for 8 days. Play-practice with your family. The most important is that you think, plan and survive. Things, if they can’t be replaced, can become memories.

Thank you, James Longman, for sharing your story. Mental illness runs in my ex-husband's family. Some family siblings were affected by mental illness. His brother had schizophrenia, bipolar illness. His youngest sister was diagnosed with severe depression and psychosis. My ex-husband was diagnosed with visual hallucinations, psychosis, depression and schizophrenia. I took care of my ex-husband the last 2 years of his life. Being around someone with mental illness drained me mentally, physically and emotionally. In the end, he ended up in a memory care facility, went into hospice care for 13 months, and passed away 10/18/2024

The wealthy have multiple homes, multiple modes of transportation and the resources to fully recover from a disaster. There are non-wealthy survivors of Katrina who are still struggling with housing because they actually lost everything and didn’t have adequate recovery support. The two are not comparable.
